Question 1: - The data concerning the first year of engineer graduates
is normally distributed with the population mean µµ =Rs. 60000 of
the population standard deviation σ =Rs. 15000.
Problem 1
Find the probability of the randomly selected engineer graduates
earning less than Rs 45000 annually.

Z=X-µ X = 45000
σ µ = 60000
σ = 15000
Z= 45000 - 60000
15000
= -15000
15000
Z = -1
The probability value corresponds to -1 is 0.1587
The probability of randomly selecting engineering graduate who
makes salary less than 45000 rupees is 15.87 %.
Problem 2
Find the probability of the engineer graduates earning more than
80000 a year.

Z=X-µ X = 80000
σ µ = 60000
σ = 15000
Z= 80000 - 60000
15000
= 20000
15000
Z = 1.33

The probability value corresponds to 1.33 is 0.9082

From the Z table
P = 1 – 0.9082
P = 0.0918
The probability of randomly selecting engineering graduate who
makes salary more than 80000 rupees is 9.18 %.
3. Find the range of annual salaries of the top 15% earner, given some
distribution of engineering graduates.

From the Z table, the value is 1.04

Z=X-µ
σ
1.04 = X - 60
15
X = 75.6
The highest paid 15% of recent engineering graduates makes 75600
above per year.
Question 2: -According to the Cellular Telecommunication Industry Association,
the average local monthly
cell phone bills are normally distributed, with a standard deviation of $11.35.

a)What is the probability that a randomly selected cell phone bill is more
than $67.757?
b)What is the probability that a randomly selected cell phone bill is between
$30 and $50?
c)What is the probability that a randomly selected cell phone bill is no more
than $25?
d)What is the probability that a randomly selected cell phone bill is between
$45 and $55?

Solution
µ = 42.78 = 11.35
1) Prob (x > 67.75):

x−μ 67.5−42.78
Z = σ = 11.35 = 2.20

From Table A.5, the value for z = 2.20 is .4861

Prob (x > 67.75) = .5000 - .4861 = 0.0139

2) Prob (30 < x < 50)

x−μ 30−42.78
Z = σ = 11.35 = -1.13

x−μ 50−42.78
Z = σ = 11.35 = 0.64

From Table A.5, the value for z = -1.13 is .3708 and for z =
0.6is 0.2389
Prob (30 < x < 50) = .3708 =.2389 = .6097

3) Prob (x > 25):

x−μ 25−42.78
Z = σ = 11.35 = -1.57

From Table A.5, the value for z = -1.57 is .4418

Prob (x > 25) = .5000 - .4418 = 0.0582

4) Prob (45 ≤ x ≤ 55)

x−μ 55−42.78
Z = σ = 11.35 = 1.08

x−μ 45−42.78
Z = σ = 11.35 = 0.20

From Table A.5, the value for z = 1.08 is .3599 and for z =
0.20 is 0.0793

Prob (45 ≤ x ≤ 55) = .3599 -.0793 = .2806
