Annually, Infosys conducts hundreds of projects.

The entire responsibility for implementing a project lies

with the project manager, who must ensure that the project team provides the customer with high-quality

software on schedule and at cost. Support from the organisation is important to help the project manager

meet his obligation. This segment gives a brief history on Infosys and its support for project management.

Infosys is located in Bangalore, India, and is a software company. Its stated goal is "to be a globally

respected corporation that provides best-of-breed software solutions delivered by best-in-class people." It

uses the global distribution model in which the customer can be placed anywhere in the world and

customer service can be provided from anywhere with full satisfaction. The client is sought everywhere

in the world in this model where it provides the business with the most benefit. A mix of procedures,

technology, and management is used for customer loyalty to isolate the work so that value can be applied

in the most optimal locations and then reaggregated to the customer for delivery.

The business was founded in 1981 by seven software professionals N.R. Narayana Murthy, Nandan

Nilekani, S. Gopalakrishnan, S. D. Shibulal , K. Dinesh ,N. S. Raghavan and Ashok Arora with an equity

base of just $300. The CEOs of Infosys were its promoters from its establishment in 1981 until 2014, with

N.R. In its first 21 years, Narayana Murthy led the company. The first non-promoter CEO of Infosys who

served for about 3 years was Dr Vishal Sikka. In August 2017, Dr Vishal Sikka resigned. "Sikka cites a

"drumbeat of distractions" and "fake, unfounded, malicious and increasingly personal attacks" in a

personal note to board colleagues as his reason for leaving Infosys. UB Pravin Rao was appointed Interim

CEO and MD of Infosys following his resignation. With effect from 2 January 2018, Infosys appointed

Salil Parekh as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) of the company  .

With approximately 123 development centres in four countries and offices in more than a dozen

countries, Infosys currently employs about 2.5 lakh employees. Its clients are distributed across the world
and include large corporations that are active in various industries such as banking, retailing,

manufacturing, telecommunications, financial services, insurance and transportation, more than 60 of

which are Fortune 1000 companies. It is the 596th largest public company in the world based on

revenue.On 29 March 2019, its market capitalisation was $46.52 billion.

Infosys provides the best system to support its project managers to better serve the needs of its

customers worldwide. The organisation has equipped almost every department with audio conferencing

facilities so that project managers can effectively communicate with customers and members of the group

located at various locations. Likewise, a state-of-the-art video conferencing facility is used both for

contact between the different locations of the organisation and for virtual meetings. With work-related

facilities such as a library, comprehensive computer and networking facilities, training facility, discussion

rooms, projection facilities, and so on, as well as leisure facilities such as an art gallery, a fitness room,

and tennis, basketball, and so on, its main campus in Bangalore is now one of the largest software service

facilities in the world.

Process orientation and enhancement are part of the work culture of Infosys, and processes are specified

for most of the regularly performed tasks. Infosys first implemented the ISO 9000 structure for process

specification and enhancement and obtained its ISO certification in 1993. Infosys then implemented the

CMM architecture to further develop the software operation. It was first tested in December 1997 at level

4, and then in December 1999 at level 5. Infosys now uses the Malcolm Balridge system for all-around

enhancement and building leadership quality in all areas of operation in its pursuit of continuous

improvement.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

 SEPG Support To Projects- Infosys' Quality Department comprises the Software Engineering

Process Community (SEPG). The SEPG is responsible for managing all process operations,

including definition of processes, enhancement of processes and implementation of processes. It


also manages all data and information relating to the use of processes. Though this responsibility

belongs to the project team for all aspects of execution, including efficiency, the SEPG

encourages the project team to follow the proper processes. The SEPG also forms an autonomous

platform to track and report on process and quality problems to senior management. The SEPG

helps to ensure that the specified procedures are followed and become standard practise because

"processes won't stick by themselves," To this end, in addition to providing process training, the

SEPG provides a member who, as a software quality adviser, is affiliated with a project. The

quality consultant helps to identify and follow procedures, ensures that the procedures are

followed, helps to evaluate the data, and provides any required process training. Since the advisor

is well versed in procedures, protocols, and so on, the primary support of the advisor comes

during project planning. In order to ensure that it includes all the main components, the adviser

also reviews the project plan. The Infosys SEPG schedules and manages daily independent audits,

in addition to providing guidance and assistance with processes and metrics.

 Senior Management involvement in Projects- Infosys prides itself on providing value by delivery

excellence to its customers. At Infosys, everything, including its organisational structure, is

driven by the objective of effectively and efficiently servicing customers and rapidly tapping into

new market opportunities.

Infosys has several business divisions for the delivery of client services. A team, led by a project

manager, executes a project within a business unit. All aspects of project execution, from

deciding the specifications to final implementation of the programme, are the responsibility of the

project manager. The project manager reports to a company manager, who usually reports to the

head of the business unit in turn. Senior management participation in projects is important in

order to address issues that can not be handled by the project manager. The company manager

communicates with the project manager frequently at Infosys and tracks the project through status

updates and milestone reports. In addition to routine supervision, the business manager also helps

to fix problems and issues that the project team can not address and are escalated to his level.
In addition, other senior individuals routinely review projects by actively engaging in internal

assessments Through two programmes, called PRISM (project review senior management) and IPM

(integrated project management), progress reports and project plans are available for review by senior

management. Through this framework, all senior managers are expected to regularly review certain

projects and provide feedback to the project leaders. Overall, senior management retains project

participation mainly by supervision to ensure that the objectives of the project are fulfilled and that the

client is completely satisfied.

 Training for Project Managers- Project managers are primarily responsible for pleasing the

client, they need to master not only the execution of a project's technical aspects, but also

communicating with clients, expressing expectations, team management, and so on. Obviously,

no one is likely to possess all the necessary skills, so it is vital to train individuals to learn the

necessary skills. To help people transition from being engineers to being project leaders, Infosys

has launched a number of initiatives. All new entrants attend a three- to four-month programme

of induction preparation. This curriculum includes one or two-day programmes in business

etiquette, written communication, public speaking, body language, and so on, in addition to

engineering and technology training.
