During the day the glass on this building emphasises the structure and form of the building
itself but by night this changes so the glass allows the interior of the store to be the main
focus

Glass can
be used
within an
interior
to
separate
people
and
spaces.
For
example
it is used
within
the post
office to
provide
extra
security.
Glass can be very use fully to
create a private area that still
allows light to enter the
building . One way of doing
with is by frosting the glass .

Glass can be used to make an

interior feel more private by
making the outer of the
window very reflective so even
with the lights on you can not
see inside .
 Glass and
lighting is
one way
that a
street
scape can
change
dramatica
lly from
day to
night .
This
change of
ambiance
can be
seen on
curry mile
where
the street
is bright
and
vibrant at
night .
The stained glass dramatically transforms the space by telling
stories through pictures within the glass and creating a
sombre feel with the dark spread out windows.
 This store front is a great
example of glass used to allow
the continuity of space
between the interior and
exterior .
By day and by night it is clear to
see that glass has a very
prominent characteristic that
captures and reflects objects
and its surroundings.
Not only is glass used in windows
and structures it can be seen in
informal situations such as
mirrors or barriers and railings.

During the day the interior glass

captures the skyline and at the
night the skyline glass captures
the interior shop windows.

Whilst experimenting with
the first beam I found that
the load pulling down
totally changed the shape of
the wood as it created an
arched shape.

There was a little movement when weight was Charlotte McManus
applied but only by a small amount.

the water load and only a very small
change occurred when the rice load was
added .

When both loads were hanging
it did not effect the beam at
all. The beam kept its original
form throughout every
experiment.

Oxford road
station was
opened in1849 and Originally a 19th-century
rebuilt in 1960 and warehouse, the
is made up of lots of
wooden columns
Marriott hotel has a
that have ben series of Iron columns that
bolted to the support wooden beams .
Unfortunately as the columns are
wooden building. of irregular shape a slenderness
ratio can be taken.

I have
approximated
the
slenderness
ratio using l/r.
The Mancunian way was built in 1960’ and the Charlotte Mcmanus - Columns
columns are made from reinforced concrete that are
bolted and casted to the concrete slabs of the motorway .

In the university of
Manchester
Roscoe building,
constructed in 1964
around the time of the
mancunian way, has a
series of columns that
are also made from
reinforced concrete
that are cast
monolithically to the
building .

As both of these s are irregularly

shaped columns not of constant cross section no slenderness ratio can be found.
