Operations Management and the Environment

Operations Management is a field that puts emphasis on handling all facets of a

company’s operations. According to the processes the company carries out its functions. These

functions are classified according to the company’s operations. Company uses its operations to

produce its goods and services. These processes are carried out by different departments like

marketing, administration, and accounting. All these collectively make up the organization as a

whole and functions performed in these departments manage employees. The main aim of these

department is to look after or make sure that the production of good or service is up to the mark

quality wise. By using their knowledge and the technology available to them they focus on

increasing the productivity and reduce cost, meet changing customers’ needs and wants, provide

safety to the employees, and last but not the least guaranteeing high- quality customer service.

Company develops strategies and tactics keeping in mind or taking care of all the

prospects and trials that might ascend from certain operating environment. So a company should

develop such a structure that produces high quality goods or services according to the demand

and especially the time that is allotted should be met. The first step in product development is

designing the system. It involves steps that define the features and individualities of the service

or a product that has to be sold. These steps are defined by the valuation of needs and wants of

the customers that gradually grow into comprehensive design of a product. Process carried out at

the manufacturing department is the major factor that leads to failure or success of the system.

Second is the precarious step because this step helps in defining the features of the product and

the services. Moving on to the process design, there are two parts, one is selecting the correct

equipment and the arrangement of segments required in the operative production. The other is

scale of economy. For the company’s work force to be successful or more creative proper

3
technical tools are to be selected. After the product is developed with the help of pre-planned

processes and by using high- tech equipment, the product should be made available to the

customers. For the companies to be successful and to completely understand its operations, it is

vital or necessary to recognize the nature of the operations whether strategic- value-added

nature- technologic wise- and the global competition. To achieve competitive edge or advantage

it is necessary to have effective and efficient operations of the organizations. Operations can be

connected or associated to other operating strategies for a collaboration or synergy to create.

These strategies include departments of manufacturing, accounting, marketing, and

administration. When all these strategies work together for one objective of the organization ten

positive results are achieved and met.

With changing trends the business environment has also changed or been updated. These

trends include increase in global competition, improvement in supply chain management and

total quality management, and reduction in cycle time. All these trends has created flexibility in

the production of goods and services. Operations are improved with less use of resources leading

to high performance and increase in value. This all has led to increase in race locally as well as

globally. As time passed by, operations management has developed in increased possibility and

importance.

Operations managers make infrastructural and operational decisions on daily basis, which

not only sustain but also implement these strategies in terms of service, cost, quality, speed, and

elasticity. Keeping in mind the environmental improvements into all the organized and

infrastructural areas, operation management remains to increase in opportunity. Operations

management is a process, continuous, that efficiently and effectively converts inputs and outputs.

And environmental operation management deals with the assessing of the organization’s

4
operations, its inputs, and outputs. Operations management is not only responsible or answerable

about the attainment of the products produced but its overall surroundings. So the direct concern

of the operations team is to deal with environmental problem. Environment has direct effect on

four factors of operations management and operations choices. Those four factors are cost

efficiency, quality, reliability, and elasticity (meeting customer changing needs). Choices

includes design and selection, planning and scheduling of capacity, management of inventory,

and last but not the least comes the work- force management. Keeping in mind these criteria’s,

the products are made efficiently and effectively that exceeds customer satisfaction (products are

not toxic, safe to handle, natural, last longer, smell better) and all the requirements of the

organizations are also met. An organization dedicated to environment operations management

must evaluate and accommodate its processes and systems to guarantee high environmental

standards.
