LESSON 6; ACTIVITY 9

1. Identify the precautionary measures during the earthquake

1. Be sure that water heaters and gas appliances are fastened down. Make sure wallmounted televisions, stereos,
bookcases, artwork, and hanging plants are securely
fastened and cannot be shaken loose.
2. Be alert for breakable items that are in danger of falling if your home begins to shake. Be especially alert toglass things.
Broken glass on the floor accounts for many of the injuries suffered in the aftermath of the earthquake, and glass-filled carpets
remain
hazardous long after the danger of the earthquake has passed.
3. Make sure you have a Family Emergency Plan that tells family members what to do in the event of an emergency.
4. If you are inside a building when a quake hits, stay inside and under a heavy table or desk, or stand interior doorway. Stay away
from windows. Do not evacuate the building until the shaking stops. 5. If you are outside, get away from buildings and power lines
and remember that stone facings are shaken looseand then cast outward, not just straight down, from upper
stories.
6. If you are in a car, stop safely away from large trees or structures, and stay inside the vehicle. 7. All family members
should know how to turn off utilities (gas, electricity, and water) in the home. Don’t light candles until gas lines are
checked. In the aftermath of an earthquake, check all parts of your home, especiallyutility lines, chimneys, and sewage
connections before trying to use them.

1. Identify the five most important things to prepare to survive the Fire. Explain your answer

First thing you must to do is to use a fire extinguisher and it is important that you know
how to use it properly. Second is remember that if thecloseddoors are warm or smokes
blocks your way primary route, use your secondway out. Never open the doors that are
warm to touch. If you must escapethrough smoke, get low and go under the smoke to your
exit and closedoorsbehind you. Yell “FIRE” several times and go outside right away. If
youareliving in a building with an elevator, use the stairs. Leave all your thingswhere they
are and save yourself. After you go out of fire call a firestation. For me, that is the best
things to do during a fire.

Lesson 7; Assessment

1. Research some precautionary measures on fire, aside from what is being discussed.

∙ Provide adequate means of escape

∙ Outline clear pathways to exit doors
∙ Install smoke detection systems
∙ Maintain smoke suppression systems
∙ Conduct regular fire drills
∙ Use flame-retardant materials in interiors.
∙ Make your office accessible to firefighters ∙ Keep the building plans handy.

ACTIVITY 11

1. What is a landslide?

When soil, rock, and other earth debris can no longer hold it together andgivesway to
gravity, landslides happen.

The downward force of a landslide can move slowly, (a mere millimeters per year) orquickly with
disasterous effects. Landslides can even occur underwater, causingtidal waves and damage to
coastal areas. These landslides are called submarinelandslides.

2. What are the causes of landslide?

Landslides can be initiated in slopes already on the verge of movement byrainfall, snow melt,
changes in water level, stream erosion, changes in ground water, earthquakes, volcanic activity,
disturbance by human activities, or any combinationof these factors.

ACTIVITY 12
Enumeration. Give at least three most important things that you consider before, during, and after the
landslide

1.The key to staying safe is to prepare and to

have an emergency plan in place
2. If you suspect imminent danger evacuate
immediately. Inform affected neighbors if
you can, and contact your public works, fire,
or police department.
3.Have your emergency kit ready

ASSESSMENT 8

Research the four main types of landslide and explain. Provide also an image or picture of each
type of landslide.

Falls are landslides that involve the collapse of material from a cliff or steepslope. Falls usually involve
a mixture of free fall through the air, bouncing or rolling. A fall type landslide results in the collection
of rock or debris near the baseof aslope.
2.SLIDES: Although many types of mass movements are included in the general term"landslide,"
the more restrictive use of the term refers only to mass movements, where there is a distinct zone
of weakness that separates the slide material frommore stable underlying material.
3.Topple failure involves the forward rotation and movement of a mass of rock, ice, earth (regolith),
or debris out of a slope at a point or axis below the center of gravityof the displaced mass. This
occurs without a transport medium by free falling, rolling, orbouncing on the surface.
4. A lateral spread or flow is the movement of material sideways, or laterally. Thishappens
when a powerful force, such as an earthquake, makes the groundmovequickly, like a liquid. A
landslide can involve rock, soil, vegetation, water, or somecombination of all these.

ACTIVITY 13

1. What is drought?
Drought is a prolonged dry period in the natural climate cycle that can occur anywhere in the world.
Drought is a natural, recurring feature of climate and can occur inhighand low rainfall areas (Wilhite 2000).
The impacts of drought are many, but usually includedamage to crops and reductions in crop yields, death
of livestock and wildlife, increasedfirehazard, reduced freshwater availability, and damage to wildlife and
fish habitats. Theseimpacts will have many economic and social consequences, including reduced
incomefor theagriculture and broader economic sectors, higher food prices, unemployment and
migration, and in the worst cases, loss of life through starvation and armed conflict.

2. What are the causes of drought?

A drought is caused by drier than normal conditions that can eventually lead towater supply problems.
Really hot temperatures can make a drought worse by causingmoisture to evaporate from the soil.
Just because a region is hot and dry doesn't necessarily mean it is going through a drought.

ACTIVITY 14
Enumeration. Give at least three most important things that you consider before, during, and after the
drought.

Before drought store a large amount of water in your tanks, sinks and any container that can hold
water.

During drought always remember to use the water wisely and be thrifty when usingit. Example the
water you use on washing the dishes can be use to water your plants.

After drought understand how drought affected your forages livestock ans finances. Range condition
influences the rate of recovery in forage production after drought. Evenwith sound management, plant
vigor may not fully recover for 5 or more years if heavygrazing occurred prior to and during drought.
Animal performance may be diminished, andherd size may be reduced. This understanding will form your
strategies for recovery fromdroug

ASSESSMENT 9

1. Drought can be categorized into five main types. Research and explain.
1.1Meteorological Drought
Meteorological drought happens when dry weather patterns dominateanarea. Hydrological
drought occurs when low water supply becomes evident, especially in streams, reservoirs, and
groundwater levels, usually after many monthsof meteorological drought. Agricultural drought
happens when crops becomeaffected.
1.2 Agricultural Drought
Agricultural drought is characterized by lack of sufficient moisture in thesurfacesoil layers to
support crop and forage growth. Indicators of agricultural drought often are precipitation,
temperature and soil moisture to measure soil moisture and crop yield.
1.3 Hydrological Drought
Hydrological drought refers to a lack of water. in the hydrological system, manifesting
itself in abnormally low stream flow in rivers and abnormally lowlevelsinlakes, reservoirs, and
groundwater.
1.4 Socioeconomic Drought
Socioeconomic drought occurs when the demand for an economic goodexceeds supply as
a result of a weather-related deficit in water supply. 1.5 Ecological Drought
Ecological drought is: An episodic deficit in water availability that drives ecosystems beyond
thresholds of vulnerability, impacts ecosystemservices, andtriggers feedback in natural and/or human
systems.

What is a tropical cyclone?

A tropical cyclone is a rapidly rotating storm system characterized by a low-pressure center, a
closed low-level atmospheric circulation, strong winds, andaspiral arrangement of thunderstorms that
produce heavy rain or squalls. A tropical andsometimes sub-tropical waters and has organized deep
convection with a closedwindcirculation about a well-defined center.

What are the causes and effects of a tropical cyclone? Tropical cyclones are characterised by
low atmospheric pressure, highwindsand heavy rain. In extreme condition, the winds may
exceed 240 kmper hour andgusts may surpass 320 km per hour. These strong winds may
cause torrential rainsand devastating phenomena known as the stormsurge

ASSESSMENT 10

Research and explain the anatomy of the tropical cyclone.

The main parts of a tropical cyclone are the rainbands, the eye, and theeyewall A rainband is a
cloud and precipitation structure associated with an area of rainfall whichis significantly elongated.
Rainbands can be stratiform or convective, and are generatedby differences in temperature, When
noted on weather radar imaginary, this precipitationelongation is referred as banded structure.
The eye is a region of mostly calm weather at the center of strong tropical cyclones. The eye of
a tropical cyclone is a roughly circular area, typically30–65 kilometers (19–40 miles) in diameter. It is
surrounded by the eyewall, aringof towering thunderstorms where the most severe weather and
highest winds occur. he Eye Wall: a hurricane's most devastating region. Located just outside of the
eye is the eye wall. This is the location within a hurricane where the most damaging winds and
intense rainfall is found. ... The coriolis force acts onthesesurface winds, and in the Northern
Hemisphere, the deflection is to the right.
