BASIC CONCEPTS, ISSUES AND PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

Module 1

Apply: On this page discuss your understanding on the principles of development on areas, physical, mental, social, and
emotional.

Children grow and develop rapidly in their first five years across the four main areas of development. These areas are motor
(physical), communication and language, cognitive, and social and emotional. Social and emotional development means how
children start to understand who they are, what they are feeling and what to expect when interacting with others. It is the
development of being able to:

* Form and sustain positive relationships.

* Experience, manage and express emotions.

* Explore and engage with the environment.

Positive social and emotional development is important. This development influences a child ’ s self-confidence, empathy, the
ability to develop meaningful and lasting friendships and partnerships, and a sense of importance and value to those around
him/her. Children’s social and emotional development also influences all other areas of development.

Module 1

DOWN SYNDROME

Apply: Design one graphic organizer that may fit your understanding of the lesson.

GENETICS
INHERITED DISEASE

TWO POSSIBLE PROBLEMS

SEX-CHROMOSOME PROBLEMS
MATERIAL DRUG USE

ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEMS

MATERIAL DISEASE
Assess: Discuss the organizer you have presented in the preceding page.

There are two possible problems that occur and these are Genetic and Environmental. Genetic problems emerge that may impact
both the current and future growth of the developing child in the womb. The effects of genetics are, First, the down syndrome , this
is the most common genetic anomaly during prenatal development. Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of the 21
chromosomes which means that there are three chromosomes instead of the usual two and impacts approximately 1 out of every
1,000 infants. Second , is the Inherited disease, this happens when a number of illness can be inherited if one or both parents carry
a gene for disease. Lastly, the Sex-chromosomes problems, this is the third type of genetic problem involves sex
chromosomes. .The second possible problems is the environmental problems. And under environmental problems are Maternal
drug and Maternal Disease. Maternal drug is the use of substances by the mother can have devastating consequences to the fetus.
Material Disease were a number of material diseases can negatively impact the fetus, including herpes, rubella, and AIDS.
