ANIME EPISODE REVIEW #1

Anime Title: CELLS AT WORK
AniRadio+ | Anime Episode Reviewers - Form #0005

Episode No.: Season 1, Episode 1

Review: (add some images if
needed) Cells at Work is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by
Akane Shimizu. It basically portrays the anthropomorphized cells of the
human body. The main protagonists are a red blood cell ( cell AE3803)
and a white blood cell (neutrophil U-1146) who often has their fate
intertwined with unfortunate events. The anime television series
adaptation was produced by David Production from July-September,
2018. A second season is scheduled to be premiered this coming January
2021. Is the three years wait worth it? Hear me out as I share with you
my input for the first episode. Being a Doctor myself, I have some
professional and personal insight share. Are you ready?

While I was studying to become a Doctor, I would use anime as my way

to vent out my stress. I would always wish how my textbooks and
powerpoints from the lecture would just be created into animation
instead, so I can kill two birds with one stone. What an awesome idea
and someone thought exactly that! This anime was released in 2018, and
I somehow wish it came out earlier than that. This series has just about
the easiest way to learn the basic functions, different systems, and
diseases of the body. With a red blood cell being the main character for
this series, we can experience the journey and responsibilities our blood
cells have to undergo. Such minute things can have detrimental effects
on our bodies. Let's go microscopic, shall we?

In the first episode, "Pneumococcus", we meet blood cell AE3803. She

just became a newly fully functional blood cell that is just getting used to
her role, when suddenly a group of bacterias invades the body. Red
blood cell AE3803 is directionally challenged so let's simply say that her
adventures are basically because of her, getting lost, and getting stuck at
the wrong place at the wrong time. The second lead character is our
constant Savior and Hero, white blood cell, or neutrophil U-1146. This
episode shows how persistent the hiding bacteria was and how it could
have damaged so many different vital parts of the body by just hiding
and multiplying. That's how important our antibodies are.

Having to ward off different types of bacterias or viruses, we have

special units of defensive cells that specializes in doing so. In the first
episode, we meet the T-Cell. The buffed and tough cells of our body,
who can fight off the hardest invaders that enter our system. I smiled
watching how they depicted this character, since T-cells are just like
armies of tough guys, they really made the T-cell like military men.
They are the tough defense systems, alongside our white blood cells who
generalize and constantly at work. Now, this is just one type of
neutrophils showed in episode one.

We get to meet multiple characters that we will constantly see fighting

the different invaders. How the illustrators depicted each character,
depending on how the cell functions or works in the body, was pretty
accurate. The only inaccurate cell that I spotted at once was the group of
platelets who were in the form of small little children. This was a
pleasant treat though, to be completely honest. Since these children were
so hard working fixing the body after damage, we can't help but coddle
these cuties. With medical knowledge though, we can study that platelets
AniRadio+ | Anime Episode Reviewers - Form #0005

are actually one of the biggest cells in our body. Though the inaccuracy
was obvious, it seemed to still be pleasing since cutely portrayed
platelets were just too adorable to resist; adorable and hard working that
is. It was just too cute to say anything bad about. I see what the
illustrators did there though. They really tapped into our soft side with
the cute characters.

As we continue to follow the red blood cell getting lost while delivering
her goods, we also continue to see the smallest details illustrating the
different areas of our body. May it be the lungs, or the heart, and even
the FULL map of the body for the blood cells to follow. So many details
were put into this anime, and accuracy was a 9/10. I commend how witty
and humorous the script was though. Who knew cells and viruses could
get pretty witty with their puns and idioms. I admire how the writer not
only made this anime educational but funny as well. Now seriously, who
wouldn't want to study this way?

Let me nitpick deeper into this anime. I was pleasantly satisfied with the
story-line, the script, and the accuracy of it all. Each character's voice fits
so well with their features and functional purpose to the animation.
Though they had a very satisfying cast for both English and Japanese, I
would have to give fives starts to the Japanese narrator's voice actor.
Mamiko Noto is such a talented voice actor and I would have to say that
she really brings this anime the contrast we need. A lot is going on in
this anime. From cells getting ejected in a capsule, to white blood cells
getting bloody (yes, you read it right), there is just so much action going
on. But with the soothing and calming voice of the narrator, it makes you
feel as if this is really all just NORMAL. This is really what happens
when specific viruses attack and instead of being shaken about how
violent the fighting scenes are in this animation, we suddenly hear the
angelic voice of the narrator. I can't help but admire the perfect choice
for the narrator of this anime.

I am quite excited to know that the second season is coming next year
(2021). I can't wait to see what more I can learn and what more I can
enjoy from this series. With this anime pretty much satisfying my
professional point of view, I know I would definitely enjoy the second
season. I have shared just my views on the first episode but there will be
more to come. More action and more fun-packed episodes in Cells at
work. You can even watch this series with your child, and this would be
educational yet amusing to them. What else can I say, this anime is one
of a kind.

ANIME EPISODE REVIEW #2

Anime Title: FIRE FORCE
Episode No.: Season 2, Episode 12
Review: (add some images if
needed) Fire force is a rising series that has been serialized in Kodansha's
Weekly Shonen Magazine since September 2015, and now is 25
tankobons volume strong, as of September 2020. David production aired
their first season from July to December weekly. This year, a second
AniRadio+ | Anime Episode Reviewers - Form #0005

premier aired starting last July and is still ongoing up until now, which
has been making our stay-at-home quarantine during this pandemic more
bearable. With such a thrilling and adventurous genre and teeth
clenching storyline, be ready for another fun and addicting series to end
your year.

Fire force is a story about the future citizens of the east living in a city
where people are now categorized as powered or non-powered. By
power, meaning they have the ability to manipulate fire; an ability that
has been bestowed by their almighty Solomon. At the heart of this city,
the Amaterasu produces the ultimate energy for the whole city. Being in
a world where people spontaneously combust into zombie-like creatures,
the Fire Force takes action to control and set these "infernos" to rest.
Damage control is also a part of their job. It not only takes one man to do
this but a company. We focus our story on Company 8. A newly created
company where most of the rebellious or "black sheep" of the crowd is
put together. They have even been called a bunch of barbarians in future
episodes. Though they have their share of complicated pasts, they all
have the talent and passion to protect the people of the city. Now that
more and more secrets are being revealed about how the city came to be,
we see company 8 participating in different missions to find the answers
to the many unanswered questions. We now see company 8, and the
other companies of the city, joining forces against the Evangelist.

As the fire force progresses into the second season, we are now focusing
on the search of the Adolla burst. The adolla burst originates from the
Adolla, a vaguely understood dimension from which the Evangelists
originated their beliefs. Coming from a different dimension, the people
that possess the adolla burst, tend to bend the possibility that is little
known to the actual world. They can do what is considered impossible
for the normal firepower we see from other powered citizens of the city.
Shinra Kusakabe is the first person introduced in this series to have the
adolla burst. Shinra joins company 8 shortly after passing training and
some experiments due to his powers. Though he may still be a little raw
and weak compared to the power he can actually obtain or awaken, he
soon finds the answers to the lucid dreams he's had since he was a child.
As he joins company 8, more and more of his past is revealed. Season 1
closes with finding an answer to how he came to be, and then opens a
door to another secret. A bigger secret. We question more the motives of
the evangelist. We can see good and bad and it really is starting to
becoming unclear as to what they really aim to do.

As we go forward into season 2, I will be sharing one specific episode

that has caught my attention. Not only because it reveals so much about
the secrets we want to unveil, but also because it shows a side to the
storyline that has been kept mysterious since season 1. Episode 12 with
the title "Shadow Casts by Divine Light" is the episode that sticks out to
me, the most in season 2 (so far). From the title alone, this episode
revolves around the two characters from the title itself. We meet two
suspicious fighters, and usually indifferent to the situations that have
been causing ripples of problems in the city. Benimaru is a captain of
company 7, a company that has always been kept out of the loop due to
their traditional fighting ways and lifestyle. Joker approached Benimaru
to help him in his pursuit of truth to bring justice to the unfair world that
has been created. We see the overpowered two, fighting back to back
AniRadio+ | Anime Episode Reviewers - Form #0005

against the people of the temple.

Joker has such tantalizing firepower. You can clearly see the artistry of
Atsushi Ōkubo in this episode. Each character in the Fire Force has their
own unique skill that we can almost call beautiful when fighting. But for
the JOKER, it was just ahead above the others. With colorful visual play
and sound effects as crispy as a potato chip, Joker's fighting scene, as
twisted as he may be, was so far the most intricate and inimitable fight.

Joker has always put his mysterious front, but as this episode progresses,
we see the reason behind his cryptic personality. The way the writer has
built the character up to this point was ingenious and I can't wait to see
more episodes like this.

I have a soft spot for supernatural powers. These storylines seem to

always engulf me in the fighting scenes, and the sentiments behind each
character's will to fight. In other anime action series though, the writers
take their sweet time to build the back story of the character through
short backlash in multiple episodes. But since Joker is just a minor
character in this series, showing his past and his story in one episode in
such a natural and unrushed way was done so well. The only critique I
can give is that after this episode, going forward, we see nothing of the
Joker and Captain Benimaru. If maybe they could continue to show little
scenes here and there just like how they used to for Joker, before episode
12. Currently, the series is now on episode 21 and I have not seen the
Joker since then. Not seeing the connection seems a little unsettling.
Let's see how it will pan out as the season closes. There is just so much
going on at this point that I am not sure what to expect anymore. So
many new characters and so many more deaths are seen in this season,
compared to season 1. I am not too fond of the sudden change of heart,
but then again, it makes you wonder what the writer is leading towards. I
have been pleasantly surprised so far, please surprise me someone. Fire
force is another series to be reckoned with.

I love this series but at the same time, I am quite nervous about how this
season will end. I have a feeling that there still has so much more that
needs to be revealed, but the season is already hitting the 21st episode.
What more can the writer share with us. What more will be exposed. I
just don't think I can handle another wait after this season finishes. What
about you?

ANIME EPISODE REVIEW #3

Anime Title: VIOLET EVERGARDEN
Episode No.: Season 1, Episode 13
Review: (add some images if
needed) Animated poetry, perfectly illustrated with a post war story of a young
girl in search of a way to clearly express her emotions through writing
letters. Get ready with your tissue; better yet, a box would suffice. The
grand prize in the fifth Kyoto Animation Award's novel category in
2014, Violet Evergarden, will grasp your heart to feel pain in ways you
have never before. This series has caught the hearts of many anime
lovers and anime rookies that have yet to find that spark to love anime.
Sharing my review on this series, or more intensely on the last episode,
will not only give a great self satisfaction but also self-realization as I
depict a clearer picture of how my emotions were kindled while
watching the series. Though I would strongly advise those who are still
weak at heart, be wary. This may just crush your heart into countless
pieces. Watch at your own risk!

As we journey alongside Violet, we start to absorb her sentiments.

Sentiments that may have seemed so vague but as we progress into the
series, we clearly realize it was just all misunderstood. With her uncanny
doll-like appearance, she begins her post-war life as an auto-memory
doll. Women, we now call secretaries. With people lacking the education
to write or the ability to convey their feelings to words, these "dolls" are
what puts the client's words on paper. Unexpectedly, life takes her on a
path where she will meet people who also struggled to find words to
share their thoughts and emotions. Her hopes become our hopes, and her
dreams are now making us doubt how honest our perception of love has
always been. As we go along with her on an amazing tear-jerking life's
journey, we unexpectedly fall in love with our nonchalant main
character, Violet Evergarden.

To give a back story of the final episode, we finally see the end of a long
stretched out war. Though there was still some resistance in pursue to
disrupt the peace, the treaty was sealed, and the last attempt to ruin the
peace is now futile.

Episode 13 opens with a fierce, on top of the train action, where violet
finally shows that she is now the woman her late beloved Major wished
she could be. A strong Independent woman. But now his brother
(Major Gilbert's brother) fights alongside Violet and sees for himself, the
"new" Violet. It took the Major tears and frustration to really express his
thought to violet who lacked empathy, and now, she has found herself
and what she really feels. Episode after episode, we see violet struggling
to find that foothold for her emotions. Growing up on the battlefield has
almost made her a fighting robot. Emotions were out of the picture. Fight
to stay alive, or die. Under the command of Major Gilbert, Violet has
fought countless battles, survived, and saved many people. She is a
fearless, emotionless, and lost little girl; or so many would say. Major
Gilbert was an exemption. He willingly took her under his wings, which
has now lead him to feel distraught when seeing her in so much danger
and just risking her life to protect him and the soldiers of the Country.

In this episode, we were set up to feel that she might just never get her
AniRadio+ | Anime Episode Reviewers - Form #0005

happy ending we all wanted for her. It's an ending that makes you want
to read even the manga to see a glimpse of the possibility of her
happiness being put true. Words have so much meaning, and so much
can be expressed by words. Fate has taken a very unusual turn for the
young teenager and now she has blossomed into this beautiful strong,
and dependable woman that now saves lives by choice, not like the
military dog she was during the war. This anime's action scenes are at
par with any major action anime you can think of at the top of your head.
What makes it just a little bit more appealing to a broader group of
audience, is the beautiful love story. Each episode unfolds details that
take the already climatic episode to another stratosphere.

Closing the series, we witness a beautiful epiphany of words. Words that

were always there, but were always vaguely expressed. With the
upcoming air-show, where they will release the letters that don't have a
recipient (anymore), Violet feels inclined to finally write her first letter.
Being an auto memory doll (a secretary), she has always had the knack
to type other people's feelings for them with words that pierce your heart
pleasantly. But she always struggled to write about how she felt for the
now missing or most possibly dead, Major. Though she struggled, she
came to finishing the letter. This letter taps into every emotion we have
been waiting for from violet. The episode closes with Violet's voiceover
reading the letter and showing the most recent activities of the people
Violet met throughout the season. The impact of violet's words has gone
deeper than she knows. The people she has helped are now in places
better than before they met her.

Episode after episode has brought me to tears, and I would highly advise
watching this series alone because it does make you ugly cry at almost
every schmaltzy scene. The storyline not only revolves around an almost
impossible love but also a love that I have never seen so well depicted in
anime. I'm a loser for love stories, but this has to be on top of my list of
must-watch romantic animes. What makes it really vacillating is that it
doesn't even have a main male lead that can complete the love story that
we can gush about.

Flashbacks are the only glimpses we get about how violet's love began
and grew. Some scenes were repeated and at first, you would think to
yourself, that this scene seemed familiar. But as you continue watching,
each familiar scene is amplified with specific details the artists or the
director added. It may be a twinkle in the eye, or a sentence that is now
audible, or a simple smile that is now seen, that just makes you fall in
love with the character even more; it makes you see how true their love
was. The perfect accompaniment of the instruments at a very notable
scene amplifies the moment. Evan Call (the music director) has called
this his labor of love. And it shows nothing else BUT love. He seems to
know how to just draw you into the emotions that you can't simply put
into words. I am incredibly in awe with how minimal the script was but
so much more was into the artistry of the anime. Don't get me wrong,
Reiko Yoshida did amazing. When I say a minimal script, I mean the
script only had what needed to be said. And each word came out like
poetry. In this last episode, the icing was neatly decorated on the cake.
The most beautiful letter made yet, by Violet herself, closes the series.

If this anime was created to make people's eyes swell or more towards
AniRadio+ | Anime Episode Reviewers - Form #0005

the business side of selling tissue, they sure were successful. I would rate
this anime 9.7 only because of the slow start. BUT with patience, the
story builds on more quickly on later episodes, then hit's you like a ton
of golden love dust. I have recommended this anime to many people, not
only because I love the storyline, but mainly because of the perfect
combination of artistry, musicality, poetry, and well, LOVE. Though the
title doesn't sound too appealing for those just looking around for
something to watch, the story-line is otherwise. Don't let another day
pass without watching this anime! :)
