2 Brief instructions for the user

i IMPORTANT NOTICE
This chapter is mainly intended for the end-user of the heating system. The most important
display screens and user functions are described here.
Installation and commissioning may only be carried out by qualifi ed technicians. The information
and procedures required for this are described in the next chapter following these brief end-user
instructions.

Information for using the brief instructions

The following brief instructions list and explain the most important user functions for the end
user.
The user must contact an experienced installer or dealer if this information is not suffi cient to
operate the controller.

2.1 Operation
On the touch screen, which is embedded in the cover of the CMH controller's housing, the user
can view all current system values. The display screens for all system parts are freely acces-
sible by the user. To navigate between screens or make selections or changes in screens, the
user can tap an icon or a display section (e.g. tap the display section of a system part in the
System overview screen), swipe sideways across the screen or tap the arrow button [ ] (to go
Back).

2.2 System overview

The System overview screen shows all important values for the current operating status of the
system. To change from one display screen to another, e.g. to the screen of a specifi c system
part, tap the display section for the desired system part (e.g. Heatpumps) or tap directly the
numeric key [1 to 10] for the desired heat pump in the on-screen numpad in the footer of the
display. When any of the system parts Tank, Buff er, Zone1 or Zone2 is selected (i.e. has been
tapped) all current values of the related consumer circuit are shown on the display.
To change the display language, tap the fl ag icon [[ ] in the footer of the display.
Access to the Settings screen for the CMH controller is restricted by a password. To open that
screen, tap the gear icon [ ] in the footer. In this screen, the installer can adjust the settings of
the CMH controller to the actual system structure.

2.3 Description of the display screens and operating
actions

2.3.1 Display screen “System overview”

Display section “Heatpumps”
current outdoor temperature
(as measured by Heat Pump 1, with an integrated or external sensor)

This display section shows the icons of the operating modes, which are
available for the cascade control of the heat pumps: “Heating” (Sun [ ]),
“Cooling” (Snow fl ake [ ]) und “Tank” (Tap [ ]).
While the operating modes are active, their icons are shown in colour; while
they are inactive, their icons are grey.
The temperature value shown next to each mode icon is the currently ap-
plicable setpoint.
The display element X / Y means: X = the number of currently operating
heat pumps; Y = the total number of available heat pumps for this particular
operating mode (e.g. 3 / 5 = 3 of a total of 5 available heat pumps are cur-
rently in operation).

Display section “Tank” (hot water production)

The temperature value shown above the mode icon is the currently ap-
plicable setpoint.
The temperature value shown below the mode icon (with the temperature
sensor icon next to it) is the currently measured actual value.

Display section “Buffer”

When heating or cooling demand is detected (if the water in the buffer tank
is too cold or too warm), the relevant mode icon is shown together with the
currently applicable setpoint.
The temperature value shown next to the temperature sensor icon is the ac-
tual value, which is currently measured within the buffer tank. For systems
with separate buffer tanks for “Heating” and “Cooling”, the temperature
value for the currently active operating mode is shown (“heating mode” =
heating buffer; “cooling mode” = cooling buffer).

Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019 11

Display section “Zone 1 | Zone 2”
The values shown in these display sections depend upon the system
structure and the number of heating circuits (or “zones”). Depending on the
operating mode, which has been set for Heat Pump 1, any associated icons
are shown here (for information on the meaning of the icons: → Operat-
ing Instructions for the relevant Panasonic Heat Pump).

Irrespective of the selected operating mode, the upper half of the display
always shows the currently applicable supply water temperature
setpoint (above the icon), and the currently measured actual supply
water temperature value (below the icon, with the temperature sensor
icon next to it).

The values shown in the lower half of the display depend upon the selected
operating mode and other control options, which have been selected during
commissioning at the control panel of the heat pump:
– room or pool heating
– water temperature, room thermostat or room thermistor
– compensation curve (heating/cooling) or direct entry of a fixed setpoint

The temperature value shown above the icon is the currently applicable
setpoint (setpoint adjustment (if not zero), water temperature or room
temperature).
The temperature value shown directly below the icon is the currently meas-
ured actual value of the controlled medium (supply, room or pool).
If the system controls the hot water production for a pool, then the current
pool water temperature is shown as the second value below the icon.

Display section “Photovoltaics”

If the building is equipped with a photovoltaic system (PV), whose self-gen-
erated energy is to be consumed by the heat pumps, then the Photovol-
taics function must have been activated during commissioning of the CMH
controller. This display section shows the current amounts of energy output
and consumption, the surplus of PV-generated energy, if heat pump opera-
tion is currently activated or not, and the capacity limit for Heat Pump 1.
PV = amount of energy, currently generated by the PV system
B = amount of energy, currently consumed by the building (without the
energy consumed by the heat pumps)
HP = amount of energy, currently consumed by the heat pumps
SP = surplus of energy (generated energy – consumed energy)
Off /On = activation of heat pump operation when sufficient excess energy
(surplus) is being generated
0 ... 100 % = capacity limit for Heat Pump 1 (specified as a percentage)

12 Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019

Display section “Solar-Thermal”
If the building is equipped with a solar thermal system and the speed of
the solar circuit pump is to be controlled depending on the temperature
difference between the collector and the buffer tank (heating buffer tank or
domestic hot water tank), then the Solar pump control function must
have been activated during commissioning of the CMH controller and the
System overview screen shows the values and icon depicted here.
The temperature value shown above the icon (with the temperature sensor
icon next to it) is the currently measured actual solar collector temperature
value.
The elements below the icon show, if the solar circuit pump is currently op-
erating or not (On/Off ), and which speed level is currently demanded. The
higher the temperature difference between collector and buffer, the higher
the demanded speed level will be.

Heat pump 1 … 10
For heat pumps, whose number is shown in red, an error has been
... detected. The exact error code is shown in the first detail screen for that
particular heat pump.
To open the first detail screen showing the specific values for an individual
heat pump, tap the numeric key for the desired heat pump. To change to the
second detail screen and view more values for that individual heat pump,
swipe your finger from right to left across the display.
To change back to the System overview screen, tap the ar-
row key [ ].

Language selection

To change the display language, tap the flag icon [ ] in the footer of the
display.

Settings

To open the Settings screen, tap the gear icon [ ] in the footer. Ac-
cess to the Settings screen is restricted by a password. In this screen, the
installer can adjust the settings of the CMH controller to the actual system
structure.

2.3.2 Display screen “Heatpumps”

Depending on the system structure and the number of heat pumps which are controlled by
the Cascade Manager (CMH), the most important heat pump values are shown in this display
screen.
Heat Pump 1 is the master unit of the cascade. The operating mode and On/Off status of
Heat Pump 1 cannot be controlled by the CMH controller. When this heat pump is not needed
for heating or cooling in the cascade control system, the start-up of its compressor will be
locked. This status is indicated in the display section for Heat Pump 1 by the display element

Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019 13

ExtCompSW = Yes. The other display elements in this section show the setpoint and actual
value of the supply water temperature, the current tank water temperature and the current sta-
tus of the operation time counter.
Detected errors are indicated by the display element Error.

Display screen “Heatpumps”

For heat pumps 2 to 10, the Cascade Manager controls their switching on and off (System
= On/Off ). It also changes their operating mode (Heating / Cooling / Tank) as required and
directly determines the Setpoint for them (depending on demand).
To change back to the System overview screen, tap the arrow key [ ].
To open the fi rst detail screen showing the specifi c values for an individual heat pump, tap the
display section for the desired heat pump. To change from this screen to the second detail
screen and view more values for that individual heat pump, swipe your fi nger from right to left
across the display.
The CMH controller also supports an operating mode, where heating and cooling demand is not
determined by Heat Pump 1, but can be specifi ed by an external demand via a 0–10 V signal.
This operating mode can only be selected by the installer during commissioning. When
this operating mode is active, Heat Pump 1 is controlled in exactly the same way as heat
pumps 2 to 10, and the values shown for Heat Pump 1 are exactly the same as for heat
pumps 2 to 10.

2.3.3 Detail screens with specific values for individual heat pumps
The values for each individual heat pump are shown in two detail screens, where data is repre-
sented in tabular form. However, all settings must be made at the control panel of the relevant
heat pump.
The values shown here depend on the overall system structure and the system setup and
operation setup of each individual heat pump: values which are not applicable, either because
the associated system parts are not installed (e.g. no Zone 2 values when no second heating

14 Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019

circuit exists) or because of the selected options (e.g. no Compensation curve value for heat
pumps 2 to 10, which have been set for the entry of a fi xed setpoint), are not shown in these
screens.

3 Instructions for the installer

! IMPORTANT NOTICE
This chapter is exclusively intended for the installer, because the installation and commissioning
procedures may only be carried out by qualifi ed technicians.
However, the most important display screens and user functions are described in the previous
chapter of this document.

3.1 Scope of Delivery and Accessories/Spare parts

3.1.1 Scope of Delivery

The Cascade Manager (PAW-A2W-CMH) has a plastic housing, in which all components (con-
troller, display, power supply unit, terminals, cable glands) are factory-installed.

Cascade Manager – interior view

While the controller is in delivery state, both the power supply and the communication con-
nections are disconnected from the display. This allows for the housing cover to be removed
completely, thus facilitating wall installation and connection of all cables.
The small plastic bag labelled “HP2-10 TANK SENSOR”, which is fi xed within the housing,
contains 9 resistors, which are supplied as a substitute for the tank temperature sensors of heat

16 Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019

pumps 2 to 10. For each heat pump, which is to be used in the “Tank” operating mode, either a
real tank temperature sensor or one of these substitute resistors is needed. The resistors must
be mounted in the heat pumps by the installer.
The packaging also contains this manual in several different languages.

3.1.2 Accessories/Spare parts

The Cascade Manager (PAW-A2W-CMH) requires one Modbus gateway (PAW-AW-MBS-H)
for each heat pump. The gateways must be mounted in the heat pumps by the installer.
All communication between the CMH controller and the heat pumps, such as sending control
signals to the heat pumps or retrieving values to show them on the touch screen, is accom-
plished via this bus connection to the gateways.
The controller, the display and the power supply unit are available as separate spare parts.
They can be ordered from Panasonic using the following references:

3.2 Technical description

3.2.1 Product description

Cascade Manager (CMH)
The Cascade Manager (abbrev.: CMH) is available as an accessory for Panasonic Aquarea
heat pumps, to enable the demand-based control of up to 10 heat pumps.
In cascade control, Heat Pump 1 continues to control up to 2 heating/cooling circuits (zones),
a domestic hot water production system, a buffer tank and a solar thermal system. The CMH
controller detects the demand for “Heating”, “Cooling” or “Tank” and controls the heat pumps de-
pending on availability and with the aim of run-time optimisation. In addition, it is possible to let
the CMH controller do the changeover between the heating and the cooling buffer tank, includ-
ing the switch-over of the direction control valves and the temperature sensors.
In combination with a photovoltaic system and the required electricity meters, the CMH control-
ler can also be set to detect any PV-generated excess energy and to make the heat pumps use
this surplus. Finally, the CMH controller can be used to optimise the solar circuit pump perfor-
mance in a solar thermal system.

3.3 Installation

WARNING
Risk from electric shock due to electrical voltage!
The device is operated using 230 V AC voltage.
Danger to life from electric shock due to improper installation.
► Switch off power supply before opening the plastic cover of the device's housing.

Before starting installation, the cover of the device's housing must be opened. As both the
power supply and the communication connections are disconnected from the display while the
controller is in delivery state, the cover is not connected to the base of the housing. Store the
cover in a safe place while the housing is being mounted on the wall and the cables are being
connected to the terminals. The cover will not be needed until the commissioning procedure is
started.

Wall installation
Hold the housing base against the desired mounting position on the wall. Use the openings in
the 4 corners of the housing base to mark the correct locations for the boreholes on the wall.
Drill the holes, insert plugs and use matching screws to fi x the housing base to the wall.
To mark the locations for the boreholes on the wall without using the housing as a template, use
a hole pitch of 200 x 288 mm (W x H).

System wiring
The following overview shows all cables required to accomplish all functions off ered by the
Cascade Manager (CMH). During installation, connect only the cables for those system parts,
which have actually been installed in the system structure.

Prerequisites on the side of the heat pumps

For communication with the Cascade Manager (CMH) via Modbus, each heat pump requires
one Modbus gateway (PAW-AW-MBS-H). The gateway must be mounted within the housing
of the heat pump's electronic circuit boards (located in the heat pump's indoor unit (hydraulic
module)) and connected there. Instructions for installation, commissioning and operation of the
PAW-AW-MBS-H is included in the gateway's packaging. Each heat pump must be assigned a
Modbus address, which corresponds to the heat pump's number (Heat Pump 1 = 1, HP2 = 2,
…HP10 = 10). The bus terminating resistor must be activated at the last unit on the bus line,
which is farthest away from the CMH controller. For all other options of the PAW-AW-MBS-H,
the factory settings must be left unchanged.

Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019 21

If heat pumps 2 to 10 are also to be used for “Tank” mode, either a real tank temperature sensor
or a substitute resistor is needed for each of them. A small plastic bag labelled “HP2-10 TANK
SENSOR” is fixed to the Cascade Manager's base plate. This bag contains 9 resistors, which
are supplied as a substitute for the tank temperature sensors of heat pumps 2 to 10.

3.4 Commissioning
The commissioning procedure is divided into two phases. First, the heat pumps must be put into
operation. Then, the settings for commissioning must be set at the Cascade Manager (CMH)
and a functionality test must be done in the touch display views.

3.4.1 Heat pumps

Heat Pump 1
If the CMH option External demand is set to No, Heat Pump 1 (HP1) is the master unit of the
cascade. If HP1 has been switched off by the [ON/OFF button], then cascade control by the
CMH controller is also deactivated. This means, that switching heat pumps 2 to 10 on/off or se-
lecting their operating mode (“Tank”/“Heating”/“Cooling”) is not controlled by the CMH controller.
All system specific settings for configuring the system setup and operation setup must be made
at the control panel of Heat Pump 1 as described in the → Operating Instructions for the Pana-
sonic Heat Pump, “Installer setup” section.

Photovoltaics
If a photovoltaic system is installed, the Cascade Manager can control the distribution of the PV-
generated energy surplus. This can include increasing (boosting) the heating demand from the
consumer circuits of Heat Pump 1, limiting the capacity of HP1 and gradually stepping up the
number of operating cascade heat pumps (2 to 10).
For increasing demand, the CMH controller uses the SmartGrid function (SG ready) set at the
HP1 control panel and activates it via Modbus communication, if need be. For the increased
demand settings (Installer setup » System setup » SG ready » Capacity [1]) to become
effective, it is necessary to connect a wire bridge between terminals VCC and BIT2 in the
SG SIGNAL section on the optional PCB of HP1.
For limiting the capacity of HP1, the CMH controller uses a 0–10 V signal, which must
be connected to the terminals labelled DC GND (ground) and DC 10V (signal) in the
DEMAND SIGNAL section on the optional PCB of HP1. For the capacity limitation settings to
become effective, the option Installer setup » System setup » Demand control at the HP1
control panel must have been set to Yes.
For the CMH controller to detect any energy surplus, 3 electricity meters are required and must
be mounted at appropriate points of measurement by a qualified electrician. Then, the CMH
controller can retrieve the current capacity values from the meters via M-Bus communication.
The following M-Bus addresses must be assigned to each meter: 1 = energy generated by the
PV system, 2 = energy consumed by the building (without heat pumps), 3 = energy consumed
by the heat pumps.

Heat pumps 2 to 10 (and HP1, if “External demand = Yes”)

Heat pumps 2 to 10 are slave units of the cascade. The CMH controller switches them On/Off
and changes their operating mode (“Tank”/“Heating”/“Cooling”) as needed. All system specific
settings for configuring the system setup and operation setup must be made at the control panel
of the relevant heat pump as described in the → Operating Instructions for the Panasonic Heat
Pump, “Installer setup” section.

22 Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019

Heating / Cooling
The operating modes “Heating” and “Cooling” require that at least one heating circuit (or zone)
is set up for each heat pump by selecting Installer setup » System setup » Zone & Sensor »
1 Zone system at the control panel of the heat pump. This zone must be configured either for
Room heating) or Water temperature (pool). Then, the menu item Water temp. for heat-
ing ON (for heating mode) or Water temp. for cooling ON (for cooling mode) must be selected
and set to Direct so that the setpoint sent by the CMH controller becomes effective for the cur-
rently needed supply water temperature of the heat pump.

Tank (hot water production)

Heat pumps, which are to be used also in “Tank” mode for hot water production, must be ena-
bled for this operating mode by selecting Installer setup » System setup » Tank connection »
Yes at the control panel of the heat pump. Furthermore, it is necessary to connect a real tank
temperature sensor or a substitute resistor to the terminals in the TANK SENSOR section of the
heat pump's main PCB.

More information on the System setup and Operation setup settings can be found in the → Op-
erating Instructions for the Panasonic Heat Pump, “Installer setup” section.

3.4.2 Cascade Manager (CMH)

Preparation
To prepare the CMH controller for commissioning, first connect the power supply plug and
the communication plug to the display. Then, fix the power supply plug to the display with two
slotted screws. Close the housing cover and fix it to the housing with screws. Finally, switch on
the circuit breaker in the power distribution, to connect the CMH controller to the mains power
supply.
The CMH controller's display will now show the Settings screen, where the settings for commis-
sioning can be selected.

Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019 23

Display screen “Settings”

If the System overview screen is shown instead, tap the gear icon [ ], to change to the Set-
tings screen. The Settings screen is password protected. The password is 5555.

Settings
All settings for adjusting the CMH controller's functions to the system structure, adapting its time
behaviour and enabling or disabling operation of the cascade heat pumps have to be made
here.

Basic functions
First, adjust the Number of heatpumps setting to the actual number of installed heat pumps
in the system. To do this, tap the fi eld with the number, and after the input box has opened, set
the actual number of heat pumps from 1 to 10, and confi rm the changed value by tapping the
[Enter] button.
If the temperature setpoints of the cascade (for “Heating” and/or “Cooling”) are to be controlled
by an external demand signal, this option must now be selected by setting External demand to
Yes. The icons for “Heating” (Sun [ ]) and “Cooling” (Snow fl ake [ ]) are now shown. Then,
tap the relevant icon, to select if heating and/or cooling demand signals are to be accepted. Tap-
ping the icons makes them change from coloured (yellow/blue) to grey, which means that the
associated function is now disabled.
Determine for each heat pump, if it can be used for the “Heating”, “Cooling” and “Tank” operat-
ing mode. The icons for “Cooling” and “Tank” will not be shown until the CMH controller has
retrieved from each heat pump (by Modbus communication) the information, if that particular
heat pump has been confi gured for these operating modes. To integrate each heat pump into
the cascade, tap the relevant icon ([ ], [ ], [ ]) and watch it change colour.
The CMH controller's time behaviour for switching additional heat pumps on and off can
be adjusted to the needs of the particular system. The values set here for Switch-on delay
and Switch-off  delay apply for a temperature diff erence (control deviation) between setpoint
and actual value of at least 5 °C. The CMH controller automatically optimises these values

24 Cascade Manager (CMH) – Installation, commissioning and operation – 05/2019

depending on the currently prevailing temperature difference. The smaller the difference, the
longer the CMH controller will wait before another heat pump is switched on.
The value set for Switchoverpoint determines the percentage of deviation, at which control
is reversed and begins to switch heat pumps off again. The percentage is based on the value
which is set for the buffer tank as the temperature difference for increasing heating demand
(boost). The default values (setting at the heat pump: Installer setup » System setup »
Buffer tank connection = Yes » ΔT for Buffer Tank = 5 °C; setting at the CMH controller:
Switchoverpoint= 40 %) will result in a control reversal at 2 °C above the supply water setpoint
for the heating circuits (Zones 1 and 2). If capacity is not to be reduced until a higher tempera-
ture difference is reached, the percentage must be set to a higher value. The Switchoverpoint
setting does not affect the “Cooling” and “Tank” modes: In these two operating modes, the cas-
cade capacity will invariably be reduced by switching off one heat pump, when the temperature
difference to the setpoint is no more than 1 °C. If this deviation prevails for 5 consecutive switch-
on delay periods, an additional heat pump will be switched on, until the setpoint is reached and
tank loading is terminated.

Buffer tank changeover

In systems with two separate buffer tanks for “Heating” and “Cooling”, the Cascade Manager
can control the switch-over of the temperature sensors, so that Heat Pump 1 always receives
the signals, which correspond to the current operating mode. Additionally, this function offers the
possibility to control the direction control valves/mixing valves for the changeover between the
two buffer tanks. Setting the option Buffer sensor switching to Yes activates this additional
function.

Photovoltaics
To activate this additional function and show the required parameter settings, set the option
Photovoltaics to Yes. The value set here for Minimum surplus must be exceeded by the
amount of PV-generated energy in order for the SmartGrid function (SG ready) of Heat Pump 1
to be activated. The SmartGrid function first increases tank demand, and then increases heat-
ing demand. If and to what extent tank demand and heating demand are to be increased, can
be determined by setting the parameters Tank capacity and Heating capacity. The SmartGrid
function is stopped once the maximum permissible amount of additionally purchased electric-
ity, i.e. 25 % of the minimum surplus, is exceeded. As preconditions for using the additional
Photovoltaics function, 3 M-Bus electricity meters must have been installed, in the system
wiring the heating demand signal must have been connected to Heat Pump 1 (terminal sec-
tion DEMAND SIGNAL, terminal 0-10 V and a wire bridge must have been connected between
terminals VCC and BIT2 in the SG SIGNAL section of HP1's optional PCB.

Solar pump control function

To optimize the performance of a solar thermal system, the CMH controller can control the
speed of the solar circuit pump. To activate this additional function and show the required
parameter settings, set the option Solar pump control to Yes. To determine the characteris-
tic curve for this function, set the parameters for maximum and minimum Temperature dif-
ference and the corresponding Speed/Power parameters to the desired values. The default
values should be adjusted to the chosen design strategy of oversizing or undersizing the solar
circuit pump of the solar thermal system, to optimise performance. It is important to check at
the control panel of Heat Pump 1 if the Installer setup » System setup » Solar connection
option is set to Yes and which tank (buffer tank or DHW tank) has been associated with this
function. Switching the solar circuit pump on/off is not controlled by the CMH controller, but by
Heat Pump 1 instead.

Display brightness and key tone

The user can adjust the brightness of the display backlight and the key tone by tapping the con-
trols in the header of the display.
To open the input box for adjusting the display brightness, tap the value next to the Light Bulb
icon [ ]. Change the value by tapping the numeric keys and confirm the change with the
[Enter] button.
To switch the key tone on or off, just tap the Loudspeaker icon [ ].

Returning to the “System overview” screen

To change back to the System overview screen, tap the arrow key [ ] in the header of the
Settings screen, or wait 5 minutes for the inactivity timeout to elapse and for the display to
change back to the System overview screen automatically. After another 5 minutes of inactiv-
ity, the display backlight is switched off to save energy. To re-activate the display, just tap the
display again.

3.4.3 Functional test

Check that in the display screens System overview and Heatpumps and in the detail screens
for individual heat pumps only plausible/actual values are displayed. Otherwise, a fault may
have occurred. Faults in Modbus communication or alarms for certain heat pumps may result
in the affected heat pump no longer being available in the cascade. This is indicated by the fact
that the number of currently available heat pumps is less than the total number of heat pumps,
which have been configured for that particular operating mode in the Settings screen. Even if
no fault has occurred, the number of heat pumps available for the “Heating” and “Cooling” mode
is reduced, when a heat pump is currently running in “Tank” mode.

3.5 BMS connection

The Cascade Manager (CMH) can be used as a Modbus IP slave unit. It has a LAN port with
active DHCP and can readily be integrated into an Ethernet network. A list with available Mod-
bus data points is not part of these instructions, but can be requested from Panasonic Customer
Service.
