Objective:

To determine the fineness of cement by sieve method

Both trials have passed the fineness of cement test. The first trial

1. The smaller the particle size, the greater the surface area-to-volume ratio,
and thus, the more area available for water-cement interaction per
unit volume.
2. Therefore finer cement reacts faster with water and the rate of
development of strength and corresponding heat of hydration is high.

Results and disc:

We were given 100 grams for us to test, and with the use of #200 sieve, we sieve the cement for at least
15 mins. We weight the residue and got 1.4g. to determine the fineness of a cement sample, we would
subtract the cement residue to the initial weight of the cement and divide the difference by the initial
weight of the cement and multiplying everything to 100. For the first trial we got 98.6% of fineness,
which passed the fineness test. Fineness for cements should not be lower than 78%. For the the second
trial, we got 1.9g of residue and 98.1% fineness, which again passed the fineness test.

Conc:

The size of the particles of the cement is called its fineness. There’s a need for fine cement to make sure
every particle of cement is hydrated. Determining the cement’s fineness is necessary becsause it affects
hydration rate, and eventually, its strength. It is said that the samller the particle size is, the greater the
surface area-to-volume ration, hence making room for more water to interact with cement. Therefore,
the finer cement particles react faster with water. In our experient, we are to determine the fineness of
cement samples given to us. And as seen in our data, the 1 st trial has 98.6% fineness and the 2 nd trial has
98.1%. both passed the fineness of cement test.
