PHILOSOPHY
INTRODUCTION:-
The term philosophy is derived from the Greek word “phiosophia” which means love of wisdom.
It is concerned with the search of eternal truth. From the times immemorial great men have given
their views. The ultimate truth is yet to be found out. John Locke is one of those great men who
had given some reflections upon the theory of idealism

LIFE HISTORY:-
John Locke was an English philosopher. Locke was born on 29 August 1632, in a small thatched
cottage by the church in England. He was a Christian & was baptized on the same day. Locke's
mother named Agnes Keene & father, who was also named John Locke, was a country lawyer.
Locke was sent to the prestigious Westminster School in London followed by Christ Church
College, Oxford. Although a capable student, Locke was irritated by the undergraduate
curriculum of the time. Locke was introduced to medicine and the experimental philosophy in
the English Royal Society.

He died in 28 October 1704. Locke never married nor had children.

CONTRIBUTION TO EDUCATION:-

REALISM:-

This theory is away from the world of ideas & is concerned with the world we live in which is
operated by the laws of nature. According to this theory teaching & learning is systematically
organized by scientific evaluation.

Out of Locke's major claims the following played a defining role in eighteenth-century
educational theory.

 “Essay Concerning Human Understanding”

 “Some Thoughts Concerning Education”

Out of all the men we meet with, nine parts of ten are what they are, good or evil, useful or not,
by their education. He did not believe in innate talents and interests.

For example, he advises parents to watch their children carefully in order to discover their
"aptitudes," and to nurture their children's own interests observe what their native stock is & how
it may be improved

 Thoughts Concerning Education,

 Locke's second most important contribution to eighteenth-century educational theory also


stems from his theory of the self. He writes: "the little and almost insensible impressions on
our tender infancies have very important and lasting consequences."

For example, he warns against letting "a foolish maid" convince a child that "goblins and
sprites" are associated with the darkness, for "darkness shall ever afterwards bring with it
those frightful ideas, and they shall be so joined, that he can no more bear the one than the
other."
 Western child-rearing manuals are still dominated by the topics of food and sleep. Locke
firmly believed that children should be exposed to harsh conditions while young in order to
inure them to, for example, cold temperatures.

 Locke dedicates “Some Thoughts Concerning Education” to explaining how to instill virtue
in children. He defines virtue as a combination of self-denial and rationality: "that a man is
able to deny himself his own desires, cross his own inclinations, and purely follow what
reason directs as best, though the appetite lean the other way"

 According to Locke, education was fundamentally the same for men and women—there were
only small, obvious differences for women that they should be taught at home as girls already
were and should learn useful and necessary crafts of the house and estate.

SUMMARY:-

Locke's Some Thoughts Concerning Education was runaway bestseller one of the foundational
eighteenth-century texts on educational theory. In Britain, it was considered the standard
treatment of the topic for over a century. During the eighteenth century alone, it was published in
at least 53 editions and 6 different languages.

MY PHILISOPHY:-

I am also inspired by his views & recommend inculcating this type of education to the Indian
teaching strategies. Practical aspects and rational thinking must be encouraged to break the
rhythm of the false practice of memorizing facts without any practical application.
