CASE-ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

In the MBA-I Trimester of a college, XML Management School, there are


50 students. Their academic performance along with their gender and
subject-stream has been noted down. The information is presented in the
data sheet (Case_Academic Performance-Data.xls)

Answer the following questions:

1. If a student is randomly selected, what are the chances that he will be


a male?
Ans. 25/50 = .5
(total number of students are 50 and total number of males are 25. So we applied
filter to find.)

2. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has taken


commerce stream in graduation?
Ans. 12/50 = 0.24

(total number of students are 50 and total number of commerce graduates are
12. So we applied filter to find.)

3. What is the probability that a randomly selected student will be


female and have taken professional stream in graduation?
Ans. 3/50 = 0.06

(total number of students are 50 and total number of females and who have
taken professional course in graduation are 3. So we applied filter to find.)

4. A student was randomly selected and was found to be a Female. What


is the probability that she has taken science stream in graduation?
Ans. 11/25 = 0.44

(total number of females are 25 and who have taken science course in graduation
are 11. So we applied filter to find.)

5. A randomly selected student is from arts stream. What is the


probability that he will be a male?

Ans. 1/5 = 0.2

(total number students in arts stream are 5 and total number of males in arts
stream is 1. So we applied filter to find.)

6. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has secured at


least 75% marks both in XII and graduation?
Ans. 1/50 = 0.02

7. What is the probability that a randomly selected student has obtained


less than 70% marks in XII and has more than 80% marks in X?
Ans. 0

8. What is the probability that a randomly selected female student have


secured more than 80 percentile in CAT?
Ans. 4/25 = 0.16

9. Are the events ‘being male’ and ‘having science stream in graduation’
independent?
Ans. yes

10. A randomly selected student is found to be female, what are the


chances that she has her CAT percentile in between 75 and 90?
Ans. 8/25 = 0.32

11. A randomly selected student has got less than 65% marks in
graduation, which event has more probability that the student would
be a male or female?
Ans. Males – 17/50 = 0.34
Females – 12/50 = 0.24
