Summary of Change 1
Change 1 to BR 45 Volume 3 [May 1996 edition] replaces 90% of the original contents of this
book. It removes obsolete material, inserts chapter dividers to assist users find information
quickly and includes much more ‘practical user guidance’ on a wider range of equipment, in a
more user-friendly format, as follows:
Chapter 1 (Radio Aids) Decca & Omega removed. Loran C receiver updated.
Chapter 2 (Satellite Navigation) QYF user-instructions vastly expanded.
SPGR user-instructions included for first time.
Chapter 4 (Precise Navigation) New chapter, including:
• SPGR/CRPA Jamming Resistant GPS System
• Precise Fixing (PF) System (DGPS / GPS)
• Trisponder (no change)
• Skyfix (GPS) System
Chapter 5 (Instruments / Equipment) EM Log / AGILOG: user-instructions expanded.
Echo sounder (Types 778 & 780) user-instructions
vastly expanded.
Sextant info mostly removed (now in BR 45 Vol 2).
New section on submarine-specific items.
Chapter 6 (Gyros) Minor additions to Arma Brown Mk 12.
Chapter 7 (Inertial Systems) SINS Mk 1 / Mk 2 removed (obsolete).
NATO SINS user-instructions vastly expanded.
Chapter 8 (Magnetics) Minor corrections to Magnetic Coefficient & DG.
Chapter 9 (Plots / Displays) Page headers change to indicate equipment displayed.
SNAPS user-instructions vastly expanded.
NAUTIS system description substantially expanded.
SM Emergency Radar included for first time.
Radar 1007/JUF/JQA user instructions included.
Radar 1008 (ARPA) system description expanded.
Annex 9A (Plots / Displays) Radar 1008 (ARPA) user-instructions included.
Chapter 10 (AIS) New chapter describing AIS systems.
Chapter 11 (Electronic Charts) Removal of Electronic Chart info (to BR 45 Vol 8).
Appendix 1 (Fleet Navaid Fit) Inclusion of ‘Fleet Navaid Fits’ (including SM and
RFA) for the first time. This data is not complete;
ships / SMs are invited to forward amendments.
