MANGALORE INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY & ENGINEERING, MOODABIDRI.

Department of Mechanical Engineering
INTERNAL TEST - III
SEMESTER III Branch : AE
Subject: Basic Thermodynamics Subject Code: 10ME33
Time: 9:30 am TO 10:30 am Date: 08-11-2012 Max. Marks: 25
Name of the Faculty: Mr. Naveen H E

Note: 1. Answer any TWO full questions.

1. Define the following terms a) heat of fusion b) latent heat of vapourization c) Sensible heat d)
Enthalpy e) Dryness fraction f) Saturation temperature - 12.5 marks
2. Steam expands isoentropically in a nozzle from 1MPa, 250 ° C to 10kPa. The steam flow rate is
1kg/s. Find the velocity of steam at the exit from the nozzle, and the exit area of the nozzle.
Neglect the velocity of steam at the inlet of nozzle. The exhaust steam from the nozzle flows into
the condenser at 25° C and leaves at 35° C. Determine the mass flow rate of cooling water.
-12.5 marks
3. A rigid vessel contains 1 kg of mixture of saturated water and saturated steam at a pressure of
0.15MPa. When the mixture is heated, the state passes through the critical point. Determine a) the
volume of vessel b) the mass of liquid and the vapour in the vessel initially, c) the temperature of
the mixture when the pressure has risen to 3MPa and d) the heat transfer required to produce final
state -12.5 marks
