SCENE 1
DOG OWNER- Timmy! Timmy!(to members
of the audience) You haven’t seen a dog, have
you? Kind of hairy with a wet nose? Timmy!
Where are you?
(The audience point towards the DOG.)
What? Where? Over there? Oh yes! I see him!
Thank you! Timmy! Come here! Oh no! Come
down from there! This is not funny! Timmy!
Good boy! Good boy! Stay! Stay! How dare
you! You bad, bad dog. I’ll show you who’s
master! You deserve a good beating, and that’s
what you’re going to get.
(As he goes to strike the DOG, he hears a loud
voice from the auditorium)
LUCY 3- Hey! Don’t you hit him!
DOG OWNER- Eh?
LUCY 3 - I said don’t you hit him!
DOG OWNER- Why not? Running off and
making me look stupid in front of all these
people. He must learn to behave.

LUCY 3- No! It’s not fair! I won’t let you!


DOG OWNER- You silly little girl! I’m not
listening to you!

LUCY 3- Serves him right.


LUCY 2- Cruelty to animals makes my blood
boil.
LUCY 1- I couldn’t just sit there
LUCY 1, 2 &3- I’m Lucy. And this...is my
magic finger.
LUCY 3- The Magic Finger is something I
do. Not often. Only when I really need to. It
always happens when I get cross, when
something’s not fair. I get very, very hot all
over.
LUCY 2- Then the tip of the fore finger of my
right hand begins to tingle most terribly. And
suddenly a sort of ash comes out of me, a
quick ash, like something electric. It jumps
out and touches the person who has made me
cross.

LUCY 1- And after that the Magic Finger is


upon him or her, and things begin to happen.
Like just now. It all started a while ago. At
school.

SCENE 2
MRS. WINTER - Lucy, stop talking and sit
down. You know I won’t have talking in
class.
LUCY 1- Sorry, Mrs Winter, I...
MRS. WINTER- Lucy, don’t talk.

WILLIAM - Morning, Mrs. Winter.


MRS. WINTER - You’re late, William
Gregg.
WILLIAM - Sorry, Mrs Winter. You see I...
MRS WINTER - No, I don’t see. You’re
late, William Gregg. It won’t happen again,
will it?
WILLIAM - No, Mrs Winter.
MRS. WINTER - Sit!
MRS WINTER - That’s better. Spelling.
Farm animals. Who can spell ‘cow’? Hands
up.Yes?
AUDIENCE MEMBER - C-O-W.
MRS. WINTER- Very good. C-O-W. Now,
who can spell ‘pig’. Yes?
AUDIENCE MEMBER - P-I-G.
MRS. WINTER - Well done P-I-G. How
about ‘duck’? Hands up.William?
WILLIAM- D-U-C-...K, Mrs Winter.
MRS. WINTER - Quite right. D U C K.
Now... ‘cat’.Lucy?

LUCY 1- That’s easy, Mrs Winter. K-A-T.


MRS. WINTER- K-A... No! Lucy, you are a
stupid little girl!
LUCY 1- MRS WINTER, I am not a stupid
little girl! I am a very nice little girl!
MRS. WINTER- How dare you answer back!
Lucy, go and stand in the corner!
LUCY 1- I won’t, Mrs Winter. I won’t!
MRS WINTER- Be quiet! Miaow! Stop this
nonsense! Ssssssssss! Miaow!
PHILIP - You...you...you’re a...
WILLIAM- You’re a cat, Mrs Winter! You
are a cat!
Lucy 2 - I got cross! It wasn’t fair! I saw red!
It was spooky. But suddenly I couldn’t stop
myself...

LUCY 3 - That was how I found out I had


this...power. It was...scary

Scene 3
Mime – Lucy 2, Philip and William Playing
MR. GREGG - Ready, William? Let’s go.
WILLIAM - But, Dad, Lucy’s here.

MR. GREGG- She can come too. She’ll


enjoy it. Come with us, Lucy.
LUCY 2- Shooting?
MR. GREGG - Yes. We shoot every
Saturday. Brilliant! William loves it, don’t
you, son?
WILLIAM- Well, yes. But Lucy may not...
LUCY 2-What do you shoot?
MR. GREGG- Birds, of course. But this time
of year, ducks. Wild ducks.

LUCY 2 -Ducks? You shoot ducks?


WILLIAM - Yes
LUCY - Why?
MR. GREGG- For fun, Lucy. It’s a sport. A
wonderful sport.
MRS. GREGG - I’m going too, Lucy.
Wouldn’t miss it for the world.
LUCY- You shoot ducks, Mrs Gregg?
Mime – Shooting ducks
GREGGS- Yeaaaah!
MR. GREGG- Brilliant shooting!
MRS. GREGG- I think I got one!
MR. GREGG- I know you did! Great shot!
WILLIAM - Where’s Lucy?
PHILIP – Lucy!! What are you doing?
LUCY 2 -Raising her magic Magic finger
Scene- 4
Mime – Four ducks following Mr. Gregg
and he misses shooting them again and
again.

MR. GREGG – What on earth are they


doing?
WILLIAM – They are really asking for it this
time.
PHILIP- Its getting too dark to see.
MRS. GREGG - Lets go home.
Mime – Ducks following them again
NARRATOR – Mr. Gregg heard the noise of
wings flying low over his head, and he saw
four ducks, dark against the night sky. They
were going around and around the house. He
was quite afraid.

Scene 5
MR. GREGG – That is funny. Where is my
hand?
MRS. GREGG – but…but…but my dear
what has happened to you?
MR. GREGG – You mean what has
happened to both of us.

PHILIP - Mama..mama…mama …Look


WILLIAM – Look we can fly!
MRS. GREGG – come down at once …
you’re too high!
MR. GREGG – Do you think we could do
that?
MRS. GREGG – Come on let’s try!
MR. GREGG – I’ve always wanted to know
how it feels like to be a bird.
Mime – Greggs flying and birds walking.
WILLIAM – Hey..look down there!
PHILIP – Someone is walking in our garden.
MRS. GREGG – Stop!!
MR. GREGG – Go Away! That’s my house.
WILLIAM – They’ve taken over our house.
PHILIP – I want to sleep in my own bed!
WILLIAM- We’ll be eaten by cats and foxes
in the night!

PHILIP - Where will we sleep?


MR. GREGG – Nest !! We will build a nest.
Find sticks everyone.
MRS. GREGG– But how? We don’t have
hands.
MR. GREGG – Then use your mouth.
Mime – building a nest & ducks enjoying the
house
MRS. GREGG – Just look at that beastly
duck cooking at my stove. How dare she?
MR. GREGG- And look at that one holding
my lovely gun!
PHILIP- One of them is lying in my bed!
WILLIAM – And one of themis playing with
my electric train!
GREGG FAMILY – Oh dear! They have
taken over our whole house!

SCENE 6
LUCY 3 – It must have been at about this
time that I, back in my house
LUCY 2– Picked up the telephone and tried
to call Philip. I wanted to see if the family was
all right.
LUCY 1 – Hello
DUCK 1 – Quack
LUCY 1 – Who is it?

LUCY 1 – Philip.Is that you?
DUCK 3 - Quack Quack Quack Quack
LUCY 1 – Oh, Stop it!

SCENE 7

LUCY 1 – That night Mr. and Mrs. Gregg,


William and Philip were trying to get some
sleep up in the nest, a great wind began to
blow. The tree rocked from side to side. It
rained and rained and the water ran into the
nest. Oh it was a bad, bad night!
Mime – Wind blowing and Greggs
Struggling.Enter Ducks with their guns
MRS. GREGG – Thank goodness that’s
over.
PHILIP & WILLIAM – Mom dad .. look
down there!
MR. GREGG– No.. No..No ..Please don’t
shoot us.
DUCK 1 - Why not?
DUCK 2 – You are always shooting at us.

MRS. GREGG – Oh that’s not same. We are


allowed to shoot ducks.
DUCK 3 – Who allows you?
GREGG FAMILY– We allow each other!
DUCK 3 – Very nice
DUCK FAMILY – and we are going to allow
each other.
DUCK 4 – to shoot you.
MRS. GREGG – Please don’t shoot my
children.
DUCK 2 – Yesterday you shot my 6 children!
MR. GREGG – I’ll never do it again!
GREGG FAMILY– Never, never, never!
DUCK FAMILY – Do you really mean that?
GREGG FAMILY – We do mean it!
MR. GREGG- I’ll never shoot another duck
as long as I live!
DUCK 1 – That’s not enough.

DUCK 2 – What about Deer?


MRS. GREGG – We’ll do anything as long
as you put your guns down.
DUCK 3 – Will you give me your word on
that?
MR. GREGG – I will! I will!
DUCK 4 – Will you throw away your guns?
PHILIP & WILLIAM – We will break them
into tiny bits.
DUCK FAMILY– Very Well! We’ll take
your words.

Mime – Magic turning back

SCENE 8
LUCY 1- When I reached the farm, Mr.
Gregg was smashing all Guns into tiny pieces
with a huge hammer.

LUCY 2 – In another corner, Mrs Gregg was


placing beautiful flowers on duck graves that
had been shot a day before.
LUCY 3– And in the middle of the yard stood
Philip and William feeding ducks, doves,
pigeons and many more birds.
LUCY 3 – Good morning Mr. Gregg
MR. GREGG - My name is not Gregg
anymore. In honour of my feathered friends,
I’ve changed it from Gregg to Egg.
MRS GREGG – And I am Mrs. Egg
PHILIP – Look! There’s the nest! Can you
see it?
WIILIAM – Right up in the top of the tree!
That’s where we slept last night!
LUCY 3 - Just then, from somewhere over by
the lake, there came a loud BANG!
MR. GREGG - That’ll be Jim Cooper. Him
and his three boys.
LUCY 1 – Suddenly I started to see red..
