Fender Lead Series, Common Specs Head Stock Shape • Fender Lead Series headstock shape featured a return to the smaller, pre-CBS stratocaster shape. • It also featured two string guides instead of one. • Truss rod adjustments were kept at the heel of the neck. • Vintage amber coloring, Polyurethane finish. • “F” Logo chrome, Schaller tuners. • Bone nut, 2 1/16” nut width Necks • 21 Vintage style, medium jumbo frets • Rosewood or Maple boards • Black or white dot fret markers, sometimes abalone, or other • Heavy polyurethane finish • Four bolt, “F” logo neck attachment plate • 7 ½” radius • Fender standard 25 ½” scale • 2 3/16” width at body route connection Body • Most often, northern ash, sometimes, poplar • Nearly symetrical, upper and lower bouts • Strings through body, non tremelo design although many Floyd Rose mods were made to the guitar by various custom shops. • Non tremelo bridges did not use springs, and saddles were cast, not stamped. Spacing was kept with a jam nut on the intonation screw. • Heavy polyurethane finish, often translucent red, or black, but some custom colors in the last year of production. Electronics • Lead I, and Lead III featured a special design Seth Lover humbucker, with adjustable pole pieces, in black or white. • Lead II, used the very popular X1 pickup which was also used on the “Smith” Stratocaster of the same era. • 250k ohm pots, 47 uF Cap, Black or white knobs, top mounted output jack from the pickguard. Two selector switches, one for coil selection, one for optional coil configurations.
