ESL/ELL
In Spanish, s is always preceded or followed by a
vowel, so some students may put an /e/ sound at the
front of words starting with an s blend, eg stomp
may become es-tomp. They will need to practise
correct pronunciation of English s blend words.
Extra assistance
The sounds for s and z can be confusing as they
sound similar as well as looking very similar. Give
students opportunities to differentiate between the
two aurally.
Classroom activities
Decorate the Letters
Provide the students with a piece of paper that has
many different forms of the letter s on it – some
dotted, some in bubble writing, some solid letters, a
couple of capitals.
• trace over the dotted letters with different
coloured pencils, textas or crayons
• glue collage materials such as paper bits, leaves or
wool to the solid letters
• colour in the bubble letters with dots, stripes or
shapes
Which Hat?
Place two hats on the floor with the labels m and s.
Discuss the sounds. Have a pile of objects or pictures
of objects that start with m and s. Each student
chooses one and works out which hat it must go in.
Discuss their choice with the class.
