Students who speak Spanish, Tagalog or Russian at
home may mispronounce /a/ as /ar/ as in last. Give
them opportunities to practise their pronunciation
with matching pairs of words, like tap and tarp, fat
and father, cap and car.
Extra assistance
When making word family lists, teach students to
run through the alphabet and try each letter as a
starting sound, looking for the “real” words. For
example:
at bat cat dat –> this is not a real word
Classroom activities
How does it end?
Give the students a letter each (b, c, f, h, j, m, p, r
or s), either written on a card or a magnetic letter.
Write the sounds at and am on the top of the board.
Each student comes to the board and writes the
words they can make using their initial letter and
one or both endings. Discuss their words together.
