T
The woman loves a challenge,
especially conquering one –
in this case, climbing a wall of
Technicolor plastic nubs.
“So, I have a new boyfriend,”
she said as she clambered skyward.
“He climbed Kilimanjaro.”
That boyfriend was Jason Walsh,
the celebrity trainer and superhot
(read: ripped AF) founder of
Rise Nation fitness. And not even
a post-climb green juice that
tasted like pond scum could bring
Hilary down. “Right now, I feel
like I get to be one hundred per
cent authentic with the person
I’m spending my time with,” she
said. “To be in a place where you’re
comfortable, happy, and accepting
of each other… it feels so good.”
Just a few weeks prior to our
(literal) hang, she’d confirmed
her relationship status, as one
does, on Instagram. The caption:
“Date night with J,” red heart
emoji. They met when he was
her trainer. After keeping their
involvement hush-hush, the PDA
post was somewhat spontaneous.
“I was like, ‘F@$% it. He is my
boyfriend,’” she told me. “I just
needed to make sure it was right.
People don’t need to know my
business until I really know my
business, you know?”
At the time, Hilary was still
working out at Jason’s gym,
although the romance had
complicated their professional
sessions. “He’s like, ‘You don’t
listen to me anymore. I give up!’
I have a different trainer now,”
she reported with a smile.
Maybe it was a sign, maybe
not. But by the end of November,
Hilary and Jason would call it
quits on a personal level as well.
The internet clocked their
relationship out at just five months,
when really, they were an item
long before they were Insta official.
“We were seeing each other for
a while,” she said on a phone
call shortly after Thanksgiving.
“People don’t know the ins and
outs of everything. It was definitely
my first more serious relationship

since my ex-husband.”

three years ago. They have a
four-year-old son, Luca.)

In fact, the one relationship
she seems to have mastered is
with her ex-husband. “Mike’s
amazing,” she says. “We’re so
ingrained in each other’s lives.
I wouldn’t choose anyone
else to co-parent with. We
are really good friends and
care a lot about each other.”
Proof: On Thanksgiving, Duff
posted a picture of her family,
Mike included, cheesing for
the camera. And despite their
divorce being finalised last
February, the two planned
to spend Christmas together
too, same as last year. But in
all this we-get-along-so-great
stuff, where and when does a
new boyfriend fit in?
She hesitates when I ask
if she and Mike tell each
other who they are – or were
– dating. “I don’t want to talk
too much about that,” she
begins. “But yeah, we do. We
feel like it’s respectful to keep
everybody in the loop. I don’t
know as much about his life as
he knows about mine because
mine’s a lot more public.”
Aggressive dating is not her
MO though. “I’ve never been
a good dater. I meet, like, one
person a year that I’m maybe
attracted to.” She says she’s
learned not to force feelings
that just aren’t there. “I never
want to be that girl who’s
desperate to find a mate.”
Beyond the personal
front, Hilary is gearing up for
the fourth season of playing

40-something pretending
to be a 26-year-old to land a
hot job in publishing and, yes,
a younger boyfriend. While
Hilary says she wouldn’t
date a guy who’s her junior
– “sorry, never” – she deeply
identifies with the friendships
at the heart of the show.
She counts her co-star Molly
Bernard, who plays Lauren,
among her ride-or-dies.
“We had a sleepover, and she
was like, ‘Man, being in your
20s sucks.’ I’m like, ‘I know,
girl, I feel you.’ I’ve obviously
done the things I’m most
proud of in my 20s, like have
a child. But I feel like the
struggle of your 20s is just not
feeling good enough. It’s a lot
of noise in your head.”
#ADULTING
That’s why the girl who was
Lizzie McGuire is actually
excited to turn 30: “I think
I’m a pretty confident person.
I’ve had a career for a long
time, but I’ve put a lot of
unnecessary pressure on
myself as a woman,
a businessperson and an
actress. I’m like, ‘Am I doing
enough?’ Everyone I’ve
talked to says you come into
your own in your 30s. You
feel more secure. I’m looking
forward to that.”
And while she welcomes
the increased emotional
maturity, she’s kinda dreading
the face creases that come
with that. “I have to say,
ageing scares me a little bit,”
the star confesses. “What’s
going to happen? What am I
going to look like in 10 years?
Being 29 is already different
from being 25. My body
doesn’t respond the same
way to food or even training,”
she tells me. “I don’t have the
energy I had even two years
ago. I can usually get in good
shape pretty fast, but I can fall
out of shape pretty fast too.”
Hilary’s preferred workouts
are low-impact, like yoga:
“Even though I love Spinning,
my groin always hurts
really bad afterward!” More
honesty: “I’m always in that
five-to-10-pound struggle.
If I really wanted to make
changes,
I could, but I enjoy myself.”
Lately, she’s been putting
more muscle behind her
professional moves. Last year,
she changed managers, ending
a business relationship she’d
had since she was 11, to sign
with Scooter Braun (Justin
Bieber’s rep). And she’s
setting her sights on fashion
and consumer products:
“I still feel passionate about
acting and singing, but if it
can all meld together
somehow, there’s a story
there. I just need to hash
it out.”
Unlike some former
child stars, she’s not at all
compelled to do a total 180 on
her image in order to appear
cooler, edgier, or interested
in the avant-garde. “I have
to accept that I’m just a very
mainstream person. I can
watch the odd film here
and there, but I’m not super
excited about it like everybody
else. I saw Hamilton. I loved
Hamilton. The whole world
does. That’s who I am.”
In that same vein, starting
fresh doesn’t mean denying
her past. There is no big purge
of exes from her Instagram
(as of press time, the headline-
making post of her and Jason
was still live). Nor does she
disown the kiddie roles that
made her famous. “I’m just
figuring it all out,” she says.
“I feel good about what I’ve
accomplished, but it’s wild
how fast time goes by.”
And really, her approach

crazy signing up for hundreds.
“If a customer owns multiple
credit cards, they are all counted
towards his or her debt even if they
haven’t been activated or used,”
warns Mufaddal. We recommend
having two at the minimum and
four at the maximum. Managing
multiple payments and due dates
can be a brain drain! To figure out
how many cards you should have,
make sure your combined credit
limits across cards do not exceed
your six months’ salary.
If you chose to reduce the number
of cards you own, consolidate cards
with common benefits. And if you
find yourself having a card that
you’re not using, get those scissors
out and cancel it ASAP.

Dubai is a super expensive city to

What’s even worse than paying
just the minimum? Not paying
the bill at all. “Missed credit
card payments result in more
interest rate charges being
applied,” says Mufaddal. This is a
very bad thing. If you’re not good
with remembering dates, use
your smartphone calendar app
to put in reminders when credit
card payments are due. Go one
step further – put in a reminder
for when your bill gets generated.
This should give you enough time
to arrange the money to pay it off.
The truth about cashbacks
Credit card companies are smart.
You need to be able to meet all the
criteria before you actually get
your cashback. If you’re not able
to get the full value promised to
you (like 10 per cent cashback on
groceries), it’s probably because
you’re unable to fulfill all the
terms and conditions (did you
read the fine print?).
If this happens to you more than
once, then it’s probably time to get
rid of that card and sign up for one
that works for you.

I grew up listening to Bryan’s
music, so it was really great to
meet and work with him. As well as
being a brilliant musician, he’s also
a well-regarded photographer, so
working with him was an absolutely
fantastic experience.
What do you like most
about him?
Bryan has his own unique vision
and is very ambitious. You can
also trust him from the beginning,
which is rare nowadays.
What were the highlights for
you on set?
Between shots, Bryan sometimes
sang for us, which was great.
It created a really fun and friendly
atmosphere to work in.
Is there a common theme linking
this year’s Schwarzkopf looks?
This year’s looks are all very
different. Big hair and quiffs,
relaxed layered cuts, clean looks
with precision side partings and
bobbed styles with punk influence.
It was all about underlining each
model’s individuality whilst staying

Even if someone seems like your perfect match
– on an app or after several dates – new studies
suggest the crucial factors for compatibility are way
less obvious than, say, a shared taste in music or
bonding over being outdoorsy. Here’s what you need to
look for to determine that a mate is really right for you

The communication breakdown
between the sexes can often be
summed up like this: You like
to talk about your feelings; he
doesn’t. It’s not his fault. “Boys
are taught to be less emotionally
open than girls,” says Ronald
Levant, a professor of psychology
at the University of Akron. “They
are socialised by their peers
and parents never to cry and to
embrace traditional norms of
masculinity, like being aggressive.”
(Those action-hero figures aren’t
saving the world by negotiating
with the bad guy...)
But the era of the man bun has
ushered in a willingness on the
part of guys to be less guarded.
Millennial men are more down
for deep conversations with their
partner, says Levant, but there
are differences in how men and
women communicate that can
make it seem like he’s hiding his
feelings. “We all share the same
need for love,” assures Levant, “but
men don’t always grasp how to use
talking as a way to get that.”
For a lot of men, physical contact
(or even just hanging with you), is

contact can also cause confusion.
“Between two men, a direct gaze
can be a sign that you’re looking
for a fight,” she explains. And
with a woman, a guy may perceive
a long stare as you flirting, not
down to talk. “Either way, he
may close up because he’s either
too on guard or too focused on
physicality,” Tannen says.
EASE INTO THE
DEEP STUFF
“Not all men are used to
describing their emotions, so
when you ask him what he’s
feeling, he may not know what to
say,” says Mark Feinberg, PhD,
a professor of health and human
development at Pennsylvania
State University. Worse, it can
seem like you’re calling him
out for withholding, which puts
him on the defensive. So avoid
the “Why so quiet?” approach.
Instead, try these four words that
do a better job of encouraging a
guy to articulate what he’s feeling:
“I’m here to listen.” That phrase
sends the clear message that
you’re ready to hear him. Then,
if he tells you, “My boss hated my
 presentation,” rather than firing
off questions about his boss’s
reaction, use empathy to take the
conversation deeper. Say: “I’d be
so bummed if that happened to
me!” which signals that you’re
not judging him.

TALK ABOUT
HIS FAVES
While listening to him reel
off baseball stats may not feel
like bonding, Feinberg points
out that “dismissing small talk
as superficial is a mistake.”
Engaging over lighter topics your
guy cares about can actually
bridge toward more emotionally
charged subjects. When you say,
“Let’s talk,” to a dude, he senses
something is wrong. But casual
chitchat about his interests
reinforces that this isn’t an
interrogation. If you take his side
about that ump’s bad calls, he may
be more likely to open up about
stuff that matters to you later.

GIVE HIM THE FLOOR

When he does start chatting, it’s
your turn to zip it. “When women
are conversing with each other,
there’s more mutual engagement
– overlapping, interjecting, and
commenting – and less turn-
taking,” Feinberg says. “But for
a guy, it’s easier to get his point
across when he gets a chance
to say something without being
interrupted at all.”

No matter what workout you’re into, it’s VERY important that your core, which
includes your back, abdominal and pelvic muscles, is up to the challenge.
“Core exercises are often neglected and don’t sound appealing to all, which may be
the reason why many don’t pay attention to the most important part of the body
to train,” says Abegail Pondoc, a personal trainer and GX instructor at TribeFit
gym in the Dubai Marina. Having a strong core is the key to being able to do any
sport well. As Abegail says, “Core training leads to better balance and stability
which improves not only your daily activity in life, but also any sports that you may
be involved with.” She shares seven exercises that you can do while watching
the telly at home!

WHEN IN HOLLYWOOD…
My main advice for anyone visiting Tinseltown
– whether they’re newbies or au fait with the city – is
to head out on a tour. I soaked up some morning rays
and took a tour of the stars’ homes with Starline
Tours, one of the biggest and best tour companies.
Myself and nine other rubber-neckers enjoyed a
leisurely two-hour drive around the city, taking in
such gems as the fire escape Richard Gere climbed
up to kiss Julia Roberts at the end of Pretty Woman
and the mansion where that Hollywood producer
woke up to a horse’s head in his bed in The Godfather.
Plus, thanks to the gorgeous, scenic drive through
Mulholland, Robertson, Hollywood Boulevard
and Rodeo Drive, we also saw the incredible homes
belonging to David and Victoria Beckham, Katy Perry,
Larry King and Simon Cowell, as well as the Playboy
mansion and Michael Jackson’s former home.
As to what else there is to do, head to Disneyland
in Anaheim, or even spend a day on Malibu beach,
catching some surf and admiring the multimillion-
dirham homes. A visit to see your favourite star’s star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame is de rigueur, along
with a visit to the Chinese Theatre, or head up to Lake
Hollywood Park – the park beneath the famous sign.

DERMALOGICA’S
10-MINUTE FACEFIT
Balancing work, play and never-ending errands leaves me with
just enough time for the occasional blow-dry and mani-pedi.
Getting an hour-long facial never makes the cut.
So when I heard about the new Facefit treatment from
Dermalogica which lasts all of 10 minutes, I had no excuse to
not check it out! And, it was the best decision I made last week.
Dermalogica’s Dubai Mall felt like a spa
the moment I entered it, with its white,
soothing interiors. I was already psyched to
get started. The therapist viewed my face
with a magnifying instrument and used
Dermalogica’s unique Face Mapping to tell
me my story. The good news – I had overall
decent texture. But before I got too excited
about the compliment, she dished out the
bad stuff – blackheads and sun damage.
After her visual examination, she went on to
touch my skin expertly and explained that
Dermalogica believes in the power of touch.
It’s clear that they’re experts at it because a
routine examination left me as relaxed as I
would have been after a half-hour massage.
The Facefit targets one specific skin
condition; in my case, blackheads. Once
the diagnosis was done, my treatment was
determined. While the Facefit is free, I was

under no obligation to get a Dermalogica treatment. However,
since I’ve been guilty of trying to extract blackheads at home
with evil looking devices (and I’ve botched up some in my time),
I always knew I was running the risk of wreaking some serious
damage if I had chosen to do it myself again. The experts are
always the way to
go, especially with something as sensitive
as skin. With tissue-wrapped fingers, my
therapist used a manual technique to remove
the entire blockage from the base of the
follicle. She explained that this was a safer
way to remove blackheads as it reduced
the risk of infection. And it was much less
painful than my savage attempts at home!
I left Dermalogica looking fresh-faced
and feeling fabulous. My skin was definitely
smoother after all my blackhead removals.
Looking great aside, the biggest lesson
I learned that day was to leave all skin
matters, examination of the face included, to
the experts!

We hardly ever venture out of our comfort zone on the weekend. But
after hearing rave reviews from friends about Revo Café, we decided
to trek to the Palm Jumeirah’s Eastern Crescent, and our 20-minute
drive from Motor City was more than worth it. Lots of natural light,
sea views and a wide buffet table dotted with every kind of dessert
greeted us as soon as we stepped in. A good sign for what was to
follow? We thought so!
We were welcomed warmly by the host and were taken to a table
with a view to-die-for. The casual décor, calm sea and the lovely
weather immediately relaxed us. Our server was very friendly,
noted our food preferences and made some great suggestions. When
the food arrived, it looked amazing, smelled heavenly and the fi rst
bite justified all the hype – totally delish! I ordered the cream of
mushroom soup which was rich and flavourful, a crisp and fresh
Greek salad and a Thai veggie curry which was Anantara-standard
awesome. My partner ordered the pulled beef sandwich which
was cooked just right and a baked sea bass that was melt-in-the-
mouth bliss. Unfortunately, we were too full to sample the All Day
Breakfast – a crowd favourite – so we kept that in mind for next time.
The best part of this café though, along with their healthy menu
offerings, is the dessert. But be warned – the portions are ginormous.
However, if you have a sweet tooth like me, make sure you get your
partner to order their own slice because the tiramisu is too divine to
share. Really.
Revo Café has great food, stunning views of the shimmering
Arabian Sea and is super affordable. We can’t think of better reasons
to keep coming back.
