Bulletin

06 July 2018

We have received recently quite a few reported cases of failing cable splices. We have already
communicated the introduction about the new FSKIII splice (this is not affected), and will be
available to order from MCI from wk33.

The issue is arising from the current splice kit listed on the Maersk Line consumables list and
improper spliced cables (taped up joints).

In the current splice kit part number 818837A; cases have been seen recently where a high
resistance can be created.

To overcome this using the current splice kit, (part number 818837A), remove the terminal
connector block and discard this along with the fitting instructions.

To connect the cable and make the join, use inline butt terminals as below.
• For 2.5mm cable use blue connectors.
• For 4x6 and above cables use yellow inline connectors.

Out of the remaining splice kit, apply the self amalgamating tape, ensuring this is overlapped
as shown.

Lastly apply the cold shrink that is supplied in the splice kit.

The same part number 818837A and current STS codes can be used in the normal way to
input the work order in to MERC+, also using up the stocks of these kits.

Also be vigilant during unit inspection with regards to improperly spliced cables such as seen
below, ensuring these are replaced.

This is a temporary measure until part number 818837A is used and replaced with the FSKIII
splice kit 818837C
