Unit Learning Outcomes

LO1 Design single stage analogue amplifier circuits to predict and measure, by simulation, the gain,
frequency response and input and output resistances.

LO2 Develop functional subsystems through an understanding of the characteristics of operational

amplifiers.

LO3 Examine the characteristics of information represented in analogue and digital format to assess
techniques for the conversion of signals between analogue and digital formats.

LO4 Design electronic circuits using physical components.

Assignment Brief and Guidance
You are working as a training instructor in a factory that manufactures electrical components and
circuits. You have been asked by your manager to prepare an educational electrical kit.

2

The electrical kit will acquire an electrical signal from a sensor and then process it through several
stages of amplification, filtration and digital processing. The signal can be simulated too. You should
consider proper display of the output of the kit. The electrical signal could be anything of your choice
for example, pressure signal, heart rate signal, temperature…etc. You should display the results of the
kit in appropriate format, such as a trending signal, chart, digital display…etc. You should design,
Analyse and simulate the kit. You should present your kit and demo it too. You should investigate and
explain the behaviour of the different sub-systems in your kit.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is a particular form of cheating. Plagiarism must be avoided at all costs and
students who break the rules, however innocently, may be penalised. It is your
responsibility to ensure that you understand correct referencing practices. As a university
level student, you are expected to use appropriate references throughout and keep
carefully detailed notes of all your sources of materials for material you have used in your
work, including any material downloaded from the Internet. Please consult the relevant
unit lecturer or your course tutor if you need any further advice.

Student declaration
I certify that the assignment submission is entirely my own work and I fully understand
the consequences of plagiarism. I understand that making a false declaration is a form
of malpractice.

MONITORING SYSTEM

Student: Hamza Al-Ali

Instructor: Dr. Emad

Electrocardiogram (ECG)
System parameters

Heart rhythm and activity (from the sensor)

• 60-80 beats per minute

01
Signal processing
• To amplify and filter the input signal

02

Useful digital output

• To process the output using a computer
The Circuit Three Stages

Amplification Filtering Stage Conversion Stage
Stage • Notch filter • AC to DC converter
• Using • Low-pass filter
instrumentational
amplifier
Stage one: The Amplification
Stage one:
The
Amplification

◦ How to test it:

◦ Any signal that is fed

into the
instrumentation
amplifier will be
amplified by 1000.
Stage one:
The
Amplification

◦ Results:

◦ The oscilloscope
image attached shows
a gain of 1000. For a
real ECG, this is too
high!
Stage Two: 1- Notch Filter
Filtering
We will use two filtering
stages:
2- Low-pass filter
1- Notch Filter
◦ We will use a notch filter to remove the 50 Hz noise
present in all power supplies in Jordan.
1- Notch Filter
2- Low-pass filter
2- Low-pass filter
Stage Three:
ADC
◦ In order to process the
circuit using a
computer, we need to
first convert it to a
digital signal.
FINAL CIRCUIT
OUR MAINTAINED HEART RATE
1- We can add a passive
High-pass filter
How we Can
Improve the
system?
(This will make the circuit more
complex and expensive)
2- We can add an
Automatic Gain Control
(AGC)
