Learning Objectives
• To link theory of vibration and practical
vibration measurement
• To differentiate between vibration isolation
and absorption, and ways to minimize
vibration
Mechanical vibration
Mechanical vibration can be measured in the
form of:
• Displacement
• Velocity
• Acceleration
• Transmitted force
Fo can be angular momentum, linear momentum, weight etc.
Methods to reduce transmission of
vibrations from the source:
1) Changing the natural frequency of the system
2) Introducing a power-dissipation mechanism by adding dashpot (damper)
or visco-electric materials
3) Designing an isolator which changes the stiffness/damping of the system
4) Designing a vibration absorber by adding an auxiliary (secondary) mass
to absorb the vibration energy of the original force
5) Etc.
Methods to reduce transmission of
vibrations from the source:
1) Changing the natural frequency of the system
• Frequency of the system,  must be less than the natural frequency, n
• What would happen if  = n ?
• If k , n ?
• If m , n ?
Methods to reduce transmission of
vibrations from the source:
2) Introducing a power-dissipation mechanism by adding dashpot (damper) or
visco-electric materials
• Do we need high or low damping coefficient, c ?
• What does high or low damping ratio,  indicate?

Damping ratio, 

gained the experience with your experiment.
