2-STROKE DIESEL ENGINE
THERMODYNAMICS LABORATORY

To demonstrate the working of four stroke compression

ignition (CI) engine model.
2-STROKE DIESEL ENGINE

A two-stroke engine is a type of internal combustion engine which

completes a power cycle with two strokes of the piston during only
one crankshaft revolution.

All the valves in the head of the engine are exhaust valves.

Whereas, the valves in the bottom dead center (BDC) are intake or
transfer valves.

What a 4-stroke engine does in four strokes of piston, 2-stroke

engine does in two strokes which are as follows,

1. Intake, Compression stroke

2. Power, Exhaust stroke

INTAKE\COMPRESSION STROKE:

First the intake happens as the

piston moves from TDC to BDC and uncovers the intake valves on the
BDC and sucks only the air into the cylinder then compression
happens, squeezing the air into a small volume. The temperature of
the air rises to flash temperature of the diesel then diesel is injected
through an Injector.
POWER\ EXHAUST STROKE:
The fuel is injected into the hot air and it
ignites the diesel then piston is forced to move downward and this is
called the power stroke. As the piston reaches the BDC, the exhaust
valves open and exhaust gases go out of the cylinder as the new
fresh air enters the cylinder.
COMPARISON OF 2-STROKE VS 4-STROKE ENGINE
2-STROKE 4-STROKE
Smaller and lighter More efficient
Cheaper Costly
Less friction or less pumping Less emissions
loses
Consumes engine’s lubricating Do not consume engine’s
oil(no oil to change) lubricating oil(needs to change
engine oil)
Quicker acceleration More low RPM power
Can operate at different angles Less emission smoke
Simple design
Less number of parts
Low cost and easy to repair
