MODULE 1 WEEK 1 What Is ICT
LEARNING OUTCOMES
INTRODUCTION
INFORMATION, AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY (ICT) refers to all technology that is used to
handle telecommunication and access information. It also includes broadcast media, management
systems, and network-base control
Modern definitions describe ICT as the convergence of several technologies including internet and
wireless medium, but the primary focus is on the access and sharing of information and
communications.
It includes the use of computers, radio, television, cellular phones, network hardware and
software, internet connections satellite systems, applications needed for the video conferencing
and distance learning in the field of education.
The concept “online” is described as a state of being connected to the cyberspace through
a medium of internet or simply to a computer network even without internet.
The use of internet resources in not only limited to surfing the web and communication, it also
become the most accessible medium entertainment news, and even education.
Online systems can vary in nature since there are many services that are now offered using the
internet. These may include computerized reservation systems, internet and intranet support
tools , and learning management systems.
COURSE CONTENT
WHAT IS ICT?
●The acquisition, analysis, manipulation, storage and distribution of information; and the design
and provision of equipment and software.
●Deals with the use of different communication technologies such as mobile phones,
telephone, internet, to locate, save, send, and edit information.
“INFORMATION” means many things to people. Depending on the context. Scientifically, information
is a processed data. It can also be loosely defined as that which aids decision making. Information,
though abstract, could also be visualized as commodity, which could be or solid.
“COMMUNICATION” refers to the transfer or exchange of information from one person to person
or from one place to another. When action produce a reaction, whether positive or negative,
communication has taken place. Other writers in the field of communication studies have
defined communication as: process: a transfer of information, ideas, thoughts and message. It
involves a sender, a receiver, a code and a language that is understood by both the sender and
receiver.
“TECHNOLOGY” refers to the use of scientific knowledge to invent tools that assist human
beings in their efforts to overcome environmental hazards and impediments to comfort. In this
regards, technology refers to the things like computer, telephone, cell phone, GSM handsets,
television, radio, etc.
WEB 1.0
●It is a term coined to differentiate the first stage of the World Wide Web (www) in comparison
with the present stage of the internet technology.
WEB 2.0
● The term was popularized by Tim O'Reilly and Dale Dougherty at the O'Reilly Media Web 2.0
Conference in late 2004, though it was coined by Darcy DiNucci in 1999.”
● World Wide Web sites that emphasize user-generated content, usability, and interoperability.
● The user can now interact, contribute, and create their own internet space and content
(Explosion of Information and Social Media).

USER’S CONTRIBUTION
(BLOGS, WIKIS, RR, SS, …)
● “a phrase coined by John Markoff of the New York Times in 2006, refers to a supposed third
generation of Internet-based services that collectively comprise what might be called ‘the
intelligent Web’— such as those using semantic web, microformats, natural language search, data-
mining, machine learning, recommendation agents, and artificial intelligence technologies—which
emphasize machine facilitated understanding of information in order to provide a more productive
and intuitive user experience.”
● The context of the search of the user is processed by a programming language to help the
user by presenting options of what the person is interested in.

TECHNOLOGY CONVERGENCE
The evolution of technological developments that merge into a new system ringing together
different types of application and media.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The collection of internet-based communication tools and computer assisted channels dedicated to
allow users to interact, create, communicate, and share information in a virtual community and network.
MOBILE MEDIA
This refers to “media devices such as mobile phones and PDA’s were the primary source of
portable media from which we could obtain information and communicate with one another.
More recently, the smartphone (which has combined many features of the cell phone with the
PDA) has rendered the PDA next to obsolete.5 The growth of new mobile media as a true force
in society was marked by smartphone sales outpacing personal computer sales in 2011.”
A range of handheld devices, from mobile phone, tablets, and e readers to game consoles, primarily
used as personal, interactive, internet-enabled and user-controlled portable platforms that allow
interconnected users to exchange personal and non personal information (Wei, 2013)
ASSISTIVE MEDIA
Founded by David H. Harvey in Michigan USA in 1996. It is a non profitable organization. This
organization was the first internet-based reading service for persons with visual and reading
impairments. The procedure and publish voice-recorded written materials on cassettes, CD’s and
in the internet.
PLATFORMS – is defined as a group of technologies that are used as a base upon which
other applications, processes, or technologies are developed.
According to an article which features a blog of Marc Andreesen, a platform is a system that can
be progammed and therefore customized by outside developers who are the users. The
development of the applications therefore varies as the users evaluate and recreate the
programs based on their needs.
FOCUS QUESTIONS
1. What is ICT?
2. What is the current state of ICT ?
3. Why do we use Technology Convergence?
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Let the students give their insight about the roles of ICT in our daily life.
1. Using some example of pictures that are shown below, create or write your own
hashtag. To count the number of “like” in their hashtag, students will vote for the best hasgtag in
every picture showed.

ASSESSMENT
Compare and contrast the implications of varied online platforms, sites, and content to achieve
specific needs, objectives, or address challenges in the classroom or in their community. On a
piece of paper or whenever a suitable digital tool is available, write down your insight in 300
words.
