Question:

A local bakery determines that the probability of a customer ordering a

blueberry muffin is 50%. 5 customers come into the bakery.
A. What is the probability that 3 out of the 5 order a blueberry muffin?
B. Explain why this scenario would meet the criteria of a binomial distribution.
Solution
This is the example of binomial distribution which has the following properties:

If an experiment contains of n repeated trials;

And each of trial results in a result that may be categorized as a success or a

failure

If the probability of a success, denoted by p, remains constant from trial to trial and
repeated trials are independent.

binomial random variable is defined as the number of successes X in n trials of a

binomial experiment and binomial distribution is defined as the probability
distribution of the random variable X

the formula for binomial distribution is given as:

P ( X )=C nx px q n−x

Where, n is defined as number of trials, x = 0,1,2, ….. n, p = probability of success

in single trials, q = the probability of failure in a single trials and q = 1-p

Lets solve one example here.

Example 1
Hospital records show that of patients suffering from a certain disease, 80%
die of it. What is the probability that of 8 randomly selected patients, 6 will
recover?
Solution
Let’s see on example, it’s have two outcomes; one the patient dies or does not die,
so it is a binomial distribution.
Lets X = number of recover patient
And given in question, n = 8, x = 6, Let p = 0.20 (does not die) and q = 0.80 (die)

So the probability for 6 will recover

P ( X )=C nx px q n−x =C 86 0.20 6 0.80 8−6

Now solve it you will get the probability for 6 will recover.

Now come to our example

A local bakery determines that the probability of a customer ordering a
blueberry muffin is 50%. 5 customers come into the bakery.
A. What is the probability that 3 out of the 5 order a blueberry muffin?
B. Explain why this scenario would meet the criteria of a binomial distribution.
Let’s see on example, it’s have two outcomes; the will order a blueberry muffin or
does not, so it is a binomial distribution.
Lets X = number of costumer order blueberry muffin
And given in question, n = 5, x = 3, Let p = 0.50 (does not order blueberry muffin)
and q = 0.50 (order blueberry muffin)

So the probability for 3 will order blueberry muffin

P ( X )=C nx px q n−x =C 53 0.5 03 0.5 05−3

Now solve it you will get the probability for 3 will order blueberry muffin.
