Reg. No: Section: Name:

1. A shift of 125 circular fringes is observed when the movable mirror of Michelson
interferometer is moved by 0.04 mm. Calculate the wavelength of the light.

2. Construct the Phasor diagrams for central maxima and the second subsidiary maxima
for a single slit diffraction pattern.

3. Distinguish between Fresnel and Fraunhoffer Diffraction.

4. The diameter of 10th dark ring in Newton’s ring experiment changes from 1.5 cm to 1.35
cm. When a liquid is introduced between the lens and the glass plate, calculate the
refractive index of the liquid.
5. What is the relation between Phase and Path Difference of light waves?

6. When the light ray moves from air medium to glass medium, what is the phase change
that occurs in the reflected and transmitted rays?

7. When the localized fringes are formed in a Michelson interferometer? Draw the fringe
pattern for M1 and M2’ mirrors intersecting each other exactly at the middle.

8. In a single slit diffraction experiment, when laser beam of red colour is replaced by a
green laser, what is the effect on the pattern and give the reason?

9. What is the phenomena behind obtaining two coherent sources of light in a) Young’s
double slit experiment and b) in thin film interference?

10. What is the effect on visibility and the half width of interference fringes when the
reflection coefficient increases in a Fabry Perot Interferometer.

N.B.: 1. Answer ALL questions 2. No additional answer sheets will be given.

1 Three light waves combine at a point where their electric field components are E1=E0 sin ωt, E2= E0
sin (ωt-30ͦ ), E3= E0 sin (ωt+60ͦ ). Find the resultant component at that point using phasor addition. 1

2 Is the interference possible in general with two different monochromatic light sources of same
wavelength? Justify your answer. 1

3 In the figure given below what will be the field of view to the observer and why is it so? (Assume
almost a normal incidence). 1

4 In Newton’s rings experiment what will be the central fringe in reflection and in transmission
geometry. 1
5 Calculate the distance between the two successive positions of a movable mirror of a Michelson
interferometer giving best fringes in the case of green lines of wavelength 532 nm and 540 nm. 1

6 In the given figure, explain what intensity will be observed at the detectors 1 and 2 ? 1

7 If superman really had X-ray vision at 0.1nm wavelength and a 4mm pupil diameter at what
maximum altitude could he distinguish villains from general public, assuming that he needs to
resolve points separated by 5cm to do this? 1

8 Compare the Fresnel and Fraunhoffer diffractions. 1

9 Two wavelengths 589 nm and 632 nm are used separately in a single slit diffraction experiment.
The figure shows the results as graphs of intensity I versus angle ө for the two diffraction patterns.
If both wavelengths are then used simultaneously, what color will be seen in the combined
diffraction pattern at a) angle A and b) at angle B? 1

10. Deduce the missing orders for a double slit Fraunhoffer diffraction pattern if the slit widths are
0.2mm and they are 0.6mm apart. Find out how many interference maxima are there in the central
diffraction maxima. 1
