Using the James Study with Multiple Ages

This study is set up to be a family study appropriate for all ages. I use it
myself as well as with my children ages 2 - 11. Older kids could use it,
too. Here are some tips for using the study with multiple ages:

• Browse through the month’s materials each month and

decide what you’ll introduce to the kids. Keep in mind that
they will be spread out over a month, so you’ll do basic
memory work each day and then additional activities once or
twice a week. You can wing it or use the provided schedule.

• Each day, practice reciting the verses you have memorized so

far plus the one you are currently working on. See below for
tips on memorization. If you are starting on a new verse that
day, write it out in the provided pages or in your own spiral or
index cards. Your children can also do the writing with the
copywork pages.

• Go through the rest of the materials and activities (the

schedule gives you some guidance on different things to focus
on each week) and include your children on the ones that are
appropriate for their age. For example:

• Read the passage and devotion as they complete a

coloring page.

• Explore one or more of the suggested additional activities.

Some of them are simple and some are more involved.
Do what works for your family and schedule.

• Spend time one day during the month reading the

prayers I have written out, then write out your own
prayers. Older kids can write on their own and younger
kids can dictate their prayers to you and you can write
them down.

James: Deep in the Word Introduction to James

• Complete a word study. Share it with your children and

have older kids do an additional word study on their own.

• Younger kids can listen to the passage and use the Draw/
Build page. Have them pick something that stood out to
them, or a Bible story or personal situation it reminded
them of. Depending on their age they can write/dictate a
phrase or a few sentences about it. Have them draw the
the idea/scene on the page or build it with Legos and
paste in a photo of their creation.

• When the children have memorized a significant portion of the

scripture, do an audio or video recording. At the end of the
year, you can put the videos together for a meaningful
keepsake along with your completed James study pages.

Tips and Ideas for Scripture Memorization and Prayer

Although scripture memory work and praying the scripture is optional
here, it can be a fruitful activity for your family.

• Read the entire portion of scripture aloud each day.

• Practice reciting the scripture every day. Recite all the verses in
the passage you’ve learned so far plus the current verse.

• Invite your kids to help come up with hand motions for key words
in the verses to help you all memorize and recite.

• Tape scripture to the bathroom windows and recite and pray

through them as you brush your teeth.

• Laminate the scripture cards or art prints or put them into sealed
ziplock bags and tape them in the shower for recitation/prayer.

• Put the cards on a book ring and practice them together in the
car, at appointments, or before bed time.

• Record you or your kids reading the scripture aloud, with

appropriate emotion for interest, and play the recordings at
night, in the car, during mealtimes, etc., reciting along with the
recording what you have memorized so far.

• When you tuck your kids in at night, incorporate the prayers that
you have been praying and writing and invite them to do the
same during their own prayers.

• Use the provided scripture puzzles for a simple activity your kids
can use to reinforce their memorization.

• Be sure to review! After your daily recitation, review one or more

verses or passages from past months. We use a modified version
of the Simply Charlotte Mason memory system except using a full
3-ring binder instead of a box.

Thoughts on THE BOOK OF JAMES

The book of James is a favorite among many believers, and for good
reason. It encourages, inspires, and gives us practical insight that
helps put into practice what we learn in scripture. It is a call to action
to the Christian who truly desires to follow Jesus in His footsteps.

James was written by the half brother of Jesus, who was called
James the Just, and was the leader of the church in Jerusalem. He
was eventually martyred after 30 years serving in that capacity.

The book of James takes a slightly different track than some other
New Testament writings, although it’s completely in harmony with the
rest of scripture. James focuses on encouraging believers and
strengthening their resolve in the midst of trials rather than direct
teaching of the gospel, although the gospel message is surely present
throughout. It is a guide for the believer on how their outward works
should reflect and come from a true inner faith, and on how to walk
the Christian walk when it’s not easy.

Generally, here is what you can expect in James:

⁃ Temptation and endurance
⁃ Impartial benevolence / kindness
⁃ Controlling the tongue
⁃ Encouragement and instruction in godly living

Reflect & DISCUSS

Use our discussion above as well as the intro information that is
available at the beginning of each book of your Bible (if present). You
may also look up information online or in study resources.

Who wrote the book of James? How do we know?

When was the book of James written?

Who did James have in mind when he wrote this book? (In other
words, who is the audience?)

James: Deep in the Word Introduction to James

What are the main themes or messages of the book of James?

Is James’ message that our works must reflect our inner heart in
conflict with Paul’s message of salvation through faith alone? Why or
why not?
