Rationale

The Helping Heart Project (HERO) was conceptualized last school year, SY 2018-2019.
Senior High School students particularly Grade 12, are required to take up Community
Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship (CSC). This course focuses on the application of
ideas and methods of the social sciences to understand, investigate, and examine challenges of
contemporary community life. It focuses on community-action initiatives such as community
engagement, solidarity, and citizenship as guided by the core values of human rights, social
justice, empowerment and advocacy, gender equality, and participatory development. It aims
at enhancing students’ sense of shared identity and willingness to contribute to the pursuit of
the common good of the community. It enables students to integrate applied social sciences
into community-action initiatives.
As an umbrella activity, the Senior High School Department of Malapatan National High
School, through the initiative of Mr. Ronel T. Batisla-on, TII, one of the advisers who teach
Community Engagement, Solidarity, and Citizenship (CSC) came up with the Helping Heart
Project concept. The HERO Project started last February 18, 2019 as part of the Community
Engagement Project of HUMSS Grade 12 of Malapatan National High School at Sitio
Rancho, Libi, Malapatan, Sarangani Province aims to:

1. Officially launch the Helping Heart Project (HERO) as a Community

Engagement Project of HUMSS Grade 12 of Malapatan National High
School;
2. Provide tables, chairs and chalkboards to Libi Intergrated School Annex
at Sitio Rancho; and
3. Synthesize the integrative experience of implementing community-action
initiatives applying social sciences’ ideas and methods

Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences students walked an hour and a half to Sitio
Rancho carry children’s chairs, long tables, chalkboard, foods and used clothes and toys to be
delivered to the newly established multi-grade school annex of Libi Integrated School at Sitio
Rancho, Libi, Malapatan. There were more than 15 elementary pupils benefited from the
project.

Project Implementation
The HERO Project started with the social
media campaign wherein, close friends were
encouraged to donate any amount or in-kind to the
project. The project was explained to them and there
were cash donation sent through Palawan Express
Padala.

Humanities and Social

Sciences students made used of the
money collected to commission
carpenters for the tables and
chalkboards to be donated to the
beneficiary-school. Likewise, the
students exerted effort in the
preparation of the donations such as
polishing and painting.
All in all, there were 4 long tables and
one durable chalk board were made from the
donations collected from private individuals
and close friends including teachers of
Malapatan National High School. Students
who are taking the subject also voluntarily
saved money for the project.

Monoblock chairs for children were

purchased from the cash donations collected.
There were 30 chairs donated to Libi IS
Annex for the pupils who used to sit on the
floor during their class without tables and
chalkboards.
Aside from the classroom fixtures,
used clothes were also donated by volunteers
ranging from children’s clothes to adult
clothes. More than two hundred clothes were
donated to the school

materials, foods for the children were
distributed courtesy of Jollibee-Gaisano
Branch.

Libi IS Annex is almost 1.5 hours from

the highway if travelled by feet. Students and
the Senior High School Coordinator, Mrs.
Yvonne P. Laluna took the chance of
accepting the challenge just to reach the place.
The HUMSS students were in-charge
of entertaining the pupils through a simple
program coupled with fun activities such as
games, storytelling, jingles, and guitar playing.
Prayers were offered before and after the
program.
Before the project came in, pupils of Libi
IS-Annex were attending their class without chairs,
chalkboard and tables. Sitting on the floor is very
common among them.
When the HERO Project reached the area,
children experienced having long tables, chairs and
chalkboard. Thanks to the efforst of Mr. Ronel T.
batisla-on, Ms. Jayne Ruby Jayme and Mr. Sonny
Cortez, Community Engagement, Solidarity, and
Citizenship teachers of Malapatan National High
School.
