Cool Contrails
It was a rather interesting sight above Glasgow on
Wednesday afternoon at around 1:00 as a jet was
using the air space overhead as a “race track”. But
sorry folks, that’s the only information we could obtain
as a call to Boeing public relations/media personnel
couldn’t confirm whether or not they were testing
aircraft in northeast Montana’s Big Sky yesterday. One
observer speculated, “Maybe it’s the United States
Air Force playing games.” Oh well, at any rate it was
a rather cool sight to see. The combination of water
vapor in aircraft engine exhaust and the low ambient
temperatures that exist at high altitudes allows the
formation of the trails. Impurities in the engine exhaust

from the fuel, including sulfur compounds (0.05% by
weight in jet fuel) provide some of the particles that can
serve as sites for water droplet growth in the exhaust
and, if water droplets form, they might freeze to form
ice particles that compose a contrail. Depending on the
temperature and humidity at the altitude the contrails
form, they may be visible for only a few seconds or
minutes, or may persist for hours and spread to be
several miles wide, eventually resembling natural
cirrus or altocumulus clouds. Persistent contrails
are of particular interest to scientists because they
increase the cloudiness of the atmosphere and are
suspected to have an effect on the global climate.

Another AED in Glasgow
The VFW Post #3107 added an Automated
External Defibrillator (AED) to the tools
available to help our community in case
of emergency. The Valley County Health
Department was very helpful making this
possible. Jan Kaiser, VC Health Nurse gave
a presentation on how to use the AED. Time
is crucial, as it only takes three minutes
after the collapse of a person having a heart
attack to encounter brain damage. Pictured
left to right are VFW Auxiliary members Julie
Hubbard, Sylvia Little, Mary Sugg, Sharon
Lagerquist and Dean Armbrister along with
nurse Jan Kaiser. The VFW would like to let
the community know that the AED unit is
portable, if needed in the immediate area.

Here at the Glasgow Downtown Association,
we’re continuing our mission to get more traffic into
downtown businesses throughout the year. That
includes the JANUARY FREEZE.
As a business within our GDA footprint, we are
inviting you to take part in the 2nd Annual Polar Putt
Putt. This miniature golf tournament will be held on
Saturday, January 16th. for all your help and kindness.
Here’s what it’ll entail:
• Miniature golf holes set up at participating businesses
starting at 10 a.m. The duration of the event will depend
upon the number of businesses taking part.
• A rewards ceremony (likely via Facebook live) to
congratulate the tournament winners.
Want to take part? Here are your responsibilities
as a participating business:
1. You must be within the defined GDA footprint. If you’re
receiving this email, you’re in!
2. You are responsible for creating your own mini golf
hole. Get creative! Awards will be given away for the
best. Feel free to run your own promotion/sale and
serve any food/beverage you’d like to add to the fun.
Putters are available to borrow. Plan to have staff
available to monitor golfers and check off on score
cards.
3. There is NO CHARGE to be a participating business,
but we would encourage you to contribute a $20 gift
certificate to be used as a prize. Please let the GDA
know by 4 p.m. on Monday, January 4th if you’d like to
take part. No late entries will be accepted. The GDA
will market the event via local and social media, but
you’re strongly encouraged to add to that draw.
Who is golfing?
• Two-person teams will be able to sign up for a $30
entry fee. Costume/dress-up attire is encouraged (with
prizes!), but not required.
• The tournament will include an 80% payout and multiple
giveaways.
• Registration forms will be available at the Two Rivers
Economic Growth/Glasgow Chamber office.
Golfers will not be required to golf at every
establishment, but there will be bonus prizes for those
that are able to get to every hole. We will be working
with the Valley County Health Department in order
to ensure a safe event and adherence to local/state
mandates.

Words do not say how grateful I am to my friends,
neighbors and the whole community for the loving
support, prayers, condolences and food with the passing
of my beloved husband, Cam. A very special thank you
