bulbs, drawn at random from a batch discovers that the mean life of the sample bulbs is 990 hours
with a S.D. of 22 hours. Does this signify that the batch is not up to the standard?
3 The mean life time of sample of 100 fluorescence light bulbs produced by a company is

bulbs produced by it is 1600 hours. Using the level of significance of 5%,
Is the claim acceptable?
4 An automatic machine fills cold drinks in bottles with 200ml of cold drinks with a S.D. of 10ml.
A sample of 100 bottles was examined and average was found to be 198ml. Can we say that
machine is working properly?
5 A sample of 50 pieces of certain type of string was tested. The mean breaking strength turned out
to be 14.5 pounds. Test whether the sample is from a batch of string having a mean breaking
strength of 15.6 pounds and S.D. of 2.2 pounds.

found to be defective. Is the difference between the defective proportions significant?
11 While throwing 5 dice 40 times a person obtained success 23 times (getting a 6 was called
success). Can we consider the difference between the observed and expected result as being
significantly different?
12 24 students out of post graduate class of 49 were spectacles. Does it confirm a hypothesis that
about 36% of the students population studying for postgraduate suffer from short sight?
13 The manufacture of patent medicine claimed it is effective in relieving 90% of the people
suffering from the disease. From a sample of 200 people using the medicine 160 were relieved of
suffering. Is the claim acceptable?
14 A random sample of 200 villages from Coimbatore district gives the mean population per village
at 485 with a S.D. of 50. Another random sample of the same size from the same district gives the
mean population per village at 510 with S.D. of 40. Is the difference between the mean values
given by two samples are significant?

No. of families 32 178 290 236 94
Test whether the data are consistent with the hypothesis that binomial law holds.
3 From the following table, showing the number of plants having certain characters, test the
hypothesis that the color is independent of flatness of leaf.
Flat leaves Curled leaves
White flowers 99 36

Red flowers 20 25
4 A set of 5 similar coins is tossed 320 times and the result is
No. of head 0 1 2 3 4 5
Frequency 6 27 72 112 71 32
Test the hypothesis that the data follows a binomial distribution.
5 Fit a Poisson distribution to the following data and test the goodness of fit.
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
f 275 72 30 7 5 2 1
6 The theory predicts the proportion of beans in the four groups, G 1 , G 2 , G 3 , G 4 , should be in the
ratio 9:3:3:1. In an experiment with 1600 beans the numbers in the four groups were 882,313,287
and 118. Does the experimental result support the theory?
7 A die thrown 60 times with following results
Face 1 2 3 4 5 6
Frequency 8 7 12 8 14 11
Test at 5% l.o.s. if the die is honest.
8 One hundred samples were drawn from a production process each after 5 hours. The numbers of
defectives in these samples were noted. A Poisson distribution by estimating the parameter m was
fitted to these data. The results obtained are as follows
Number of
Number of defectives Expected number of samples
samples(Observed)
0 63 60.65
1 28 30.33
2 6 7.58
3 2 1.26
4 1 0.16
5 and above 0 0.02
Test the goodness of fit of Poisson distribution in above situation.[Use 5% L.O.S.]
