This document is the last homework assignment for Physics 2541: Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics in Spring 2014. It consists of 4 problems from the Huang textbook on thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. The problems cover topics like the pressure-temperature relationship for an ideal gas, phonon modes in a 2D Wigner crystal, and calculating the heat capacity scaling from bosonic longitudinal vibration modes in a 2D Wigner crystal. Students are asked to solve these problems by the due date of April 17th, with point values ranging from 10 to 15 points assigned to each problem.

Physics 2541: Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics: Spring 2014
Homework 12 (last assignment) — due Thursday,
April 17, 2014 10 points each unless noted otherwise:
1. Huang Problem 11.6
2. Huang Problem 12.5
Note in this problem that (P, T ) are the pressure and temperature, v is the volume per particle, k = kB the Boltzmann constant, and λ the thermal wavelength.
3. (15 points) Huang Problem 12.6
4. 2D Wigner cystal phonons. A Wigner crystal is a triangular lattice
of electrons in a two dimensional plane. The longitudinal vibration modes of p this crystal are bosons with frequency dispersion relation ω(k) = α |k|. Show that, at low temperatures, these modes provide a contribution to the heat capacity that scales as C ∼ T 4 .
