b. Derive the relation between bending moment and shear force in a beam. What do you mean
by point of inflection or contraflexture? 5
d. Establish the relation to find the shear stress across sections of triangle, side as base. Also
find the maximum value of shear stress. 5
2. a. A suspended bar consists of two cross sections as shown in the figure. Initially its lower
surface is 0.8 mm above the ground surface. Determine the reaction of the lower support
and the stresses in each section when a load of 40 KN is applied as shown in the figure.

b. What is volumetric strain? Show that it is the algebraic sum of tree mutually perpendicular
strains. 5
c. A beam ABCDE is supported at A and D and is loaded as shown in figure below. Determine
the value of W so that the reaction at A and D are equal. For this value of W, draw the SFD

3.a A wooden beam 1.8 m long, simply supported at the ends, has a rectangular section 150 m
wide and 600 m deep and carries a uniformly distributed load of 80 KN per meter over the
entire span. Calculate the bending stress at a layer 200 mm above the bottom of the beam,
the layer being of the section distant 800 mm from the left support. Also determine the
maximum bending stress developed in the beam.
