But there are also hidden factors which scientists call” feedback
mechanisms”. No one knows quite how they will inter-act with changing climate.
Here’s one example: plants and animals adapt to climate change over centuries. At the
current estimate of half a degree centigrade of warming per decade, vegetation may
not keep up. Climatetologist James Hansen of the US space agency NASA predicts
climate zones will shift toward the poles 50 to 75 kilometres a year-faster than trees
can naturally migrate. Species that find themselves in an unfamiliar environment will
die. The 1000-kilometre wide strip of coniferous forest running through Canada, the
USSR and Scandinavia could be cut by half, setting in motion a chain reaction.
Millions of dying and diseased trees would lead to massive forest fires, releasing tons
temperatures will fuel condensation and increase cloudiness, which may actually damp
down global warming. Others, like the”albedo” effect, will do the opposite.
The”albedo” effect is the amount of solar energy reflected by the earth’s surface. As
northern ice and snow melts and the darker sea and land pokes through, more heat will

the way things are. In the developed world prosperity has been built on 150 years of
fossil fuels. Oil fires cars and powers industry, coal generates electricity and indirectly
runs TVs, dishwashers and VCRs. Gas heats water and warms homes and factories.
Material progress has been linked to energy consumption. Today 75 per cent of
the world’s energy is consumed by a quarter of the world’s population. The average
rich-world resident adds about 3.2 tons of CO2 yearly to the atmosphere, more than
four times the level added by each Third World citizen. India, China and Brazil, which
make up nearly half the world’s population, accounted for barely 15 per cent of global

Qua
điều tra, hiện Hà Nội có 355/424 xã thành lập tổ thu gom rác thải. Có 143 xã đã tổ
chức chuyển rác đi xử lý, chôn lấp tại bãi rác tập trung của thành phố, chiếm tỷ lệ
40,28%, chủ yếu là ở các thị trấn và xã lân cận khu vực nội thành. Một số thôn, khu
dân cư ở vùng sâu, vùng xa vẫn gặp khó khăn trong thu gom rác thải. Ngoài ra, trung
bình mỗi ngày lượng chất thải phát sinh do chăn nuôi khoảng 50.000 tấn, cùng với
động chủ yếu từ nguồn thu phí dịch vụ môi trường do dân đóng góp...
Sản xuất nông nghiệp đang phải chịu áp lực do ô nhiễm môi trường đất, nước

There has never been an economic story like China's - consistent rises in
national income for 30 years at an annual rate of 10%, hundreds of millions of Chinese
people lifted out of poverty, and expansion that took it from almost nowhere to

And those with big debts may be chipper that both the US Federal Reserve and

Brazil has entered recession after official figures showed the country's economy
contracted by 1.9% between April and June, compared with the previous three months.
Compared with a year earlier, the economy shrank by 2.6%, the government's
statistical agency said. Analysts had expected a contraction, but the number was worse
than expected.
The country, the seventh largest economy in the world, has seen economic
growth fall sharply in recent years. This is due in part to low commodity prices and

has introduced stringent austerity measures designed to tackle high levels of debt.

dệt may Việt Nam sẽ cần phải điều chỉnh gấp rút nguồn nguyên phụ liệu dệt may, bởi

Magistrates
Less serious criminal and civil cases are dealt with in the Magistrates’ Courts,
where there is no jury but a case is usually heard by two or three magistrates. Most
magistrates, also known as Justices of the Peace (JPs), work part-time and are not
paid. They are given some training but donot need legal qualifications. A clerk of the
court advises them on the law. When they have heard a case, the magistrates reach a
verdict and where necessary decide what the punishment should be.
Magistrates also decide what should happen to somebody between the time they
are arrested and the time when the case is heard in court. They may grant bail (allow
the person to be free until the trial, if a sum of money is paid) or remand her or him in
Judges
Most serious cases are heard by judges in the crown courts (for criminal cases)
or the county courts (for civil cases). In civil cases, and in cases where the defendant

If the person accused of a crime pleads not guilty, he or she is tried before a
jury. When the evidence has been heard, the judge goes over the facts of the case (the
summing-up) and explains the law to the jury. If they find the accused guilty, the
judge passes sentence, that is, decides what the punishment should be.
Solicitors are lawyers who do legal business for individuals and companies and
higher courts. One advocate (the Counsel for the Prosecution) tries to prove in court
that the accused committed the crime. The advocate representing the defendant (the
Counsel for the Defence) tries to show that he or she is innocent. They call witnesses
The jury in England and Wales is made up of twelve ordinary people aged
between 18 and 65. When they have heard the evidence and the judge’s summing-up,
they retire to a special room to decide whether to return a verdict of guilty or not
guilty. If they all agree, they have reached a unanimous verdict. If the accused is
found guilty, he or she has the right to appeal and ask for the case to be heard by a
higher court.

which is interpreted by the highest court, the Supreme Court. The nine Supreme

Federal judges are also appointed for life by the President. They deal with
federal law, which applies to the country as a whole, and with important cases
involving citizens from different states. States judges hear cases involving the law of
a particular state. They hold office for ten years and are usually elected, or confirmed
in office by election.
The jury
The number of people who make up a jury varies from state to state, but efforts
are made to ensure that they represent a fair cross-section (đại diện tiêu biểu) of
society. Both the defense and the prosecution are allowed to reject a certain number
of jury candidates. Except in minor cases, the defendant in a criminal case has the right
to be tried by a jury, and many civil\ cases are also heard by a jury. In most states, the
task of the jury is only to decide whether the defendant is innocent or guilty, while it is

and are licensed to practise only in certain states. If they wish to practise in a different
state, they may have to take another exam. In a criminal case, the prosecution

UNIT 4. POLITICS
The constitution of the United Kingdom developed over time and is not written
down in one place. It consists of various elements including statutes (laws made by
parliament), important court cases and established practices. The key principles of the
constitution are the rule of law (everyone is subject to the law of the land) and the
sovereignty of parliament (there are no restrictions on the laws that parliament can
pass).
The Monarch The process of transferring power from the monarch (the Queen
or King) to the people began in the thirteenth century when King John was forced to
restrict his power by signing the Magna Carta. Today, the monarch represents the
people as Head of state but the real power lies in Parliament with the elected
House of Lords. Each autumn the monarch goes to Westminster for the State
Opening of Parliament and reads out a speech which sets out the Government’s plans
The House of Commons has 650 Members of Parliament (MPs) who each
represent a particular part of the country, a constituency. General Elections are held
every five year, though the Prime Minister may call one earlier, and if an MP dies or
retires a by-election is held in her or his constituency. MPs win their seats in
Parliament by a majority vote (or first-past-the-post system), that is, the candidate
who wins the most votes becomes the MP for that constituency.
After a general election, the leader of the party which has the most seats in the
responsible for the Treasury (finance ministry), the Foreign Secretary, responsible
for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and the Home Secretary, responsible
for domestic affairs. They, and a number of other important ministers, form the
Cabinet, which advises the Prime Minister. In the House of Commons they sit on the
front bench, and other MPs from their party sit behind them (back-benchers). The
main Opposition party sits in a similar arrangement facing them in the House, with
their Leaders and her or his Shadow Cabinet on the front benches. MPs from smaller
party also sit on the opposition benches. In the centre in the Speaker who keeps order
during debates.
The House of Lords has around 1,200 members, made up of the two
Archbishops and twenty-four bishops, hereditary peers and peeresses, who have
inherited their title, and life peers, whose title is only for their life time and will not
The United States has a written constitution which sets out the principles of
government. It was drawn up in 1787 and has so far been changed or amended twenty-
six times. The first ten amendments, known together as the Bill of Rights, set down
such basic rights as the freedom of speech, of religion, and of the press.
To ensure that no individual or group has too much power, the constitution
shares power between three groups, the executive (the President), the legislative
(Congress) and the Judicial (the courts), in such a way that each has a certain

UNIT 5. SOCIAL ISSUES – POPULATION
Rapid population growth rates can make it difficult for countries to raise
standards of living and protect the environment because the more people there are, the
greater the need for food, health care, education, houses, land, jobs, and energy.
Adding more people to a country’s population means that the wealth must be
distributed among more people, causing GNP per capita to decrease at least in the
short term.
country’s ability to manage its natural resources on a sustainable basis. For example,
people may not be able to get access to safe water because more and more households,
farms and factories are using increasing amounts of water. Deforestation may occur as
trees are cut to provide fuel for cooking, building materials, or land for grazing and
agriculture. Desertification may occur as land that has been intensively farmed
becomes depleted of its nutrients or eroded when trees whose roots systems once
anchored the soil are gone. The air may become polluted as people crowd into cities,
the number of cars increases, people use more and more energy and economies
continue to industrialize.
Parents tend to have larger families when they fear that many of their babies
may die, when they need laborers to work on the family farm or business, when they
want to ensure that they themselves will be cared for in their old age, and when they
35
Experience shows that three of the most successful strategies to reduce fertility
rates are to ensure that people 1) have greater access to primary health care and family
planning services, 2) receive a basic education, especially girls and women, and 3)
have government services that help protect them when they are sick, old or
unemployed.
Châu Á dẫn đầu với 4,302; châu Phi 1, châu Mỹ 958 triệu; châu Âu 740 triệu;

Obesity is a huge problem in many Western countries and one which now
‘cure’ for the common condition of being seriously overweight. However, rather than
take responsibility for their weight, obese people have often sought solace in the
excuse that they have a slow metabolism, a genetic hiccup which sentences more than
half the Australian population (63% of men and 47% of women) to a life of battling
with their weight. The argument goes like this: it doesn’t matter how little they eat,
they gain weight because their bodies break down food and turn it into energy more
‘This is nonsense’ says Dr Susan Jebb from the Dunn nutrition Unit at
Cambridge in England. Despite the persistence of this metabolism myth, science has
known for several years that the exact opposite is in fact true. Fat people have faster
metabolisms than thin people. ‘What is very clear,’ says Dr Jebb, ‘is that overweight
people actually burn off more energy. They have more cells, bigger lungs and they all
It took only one night, spent in a sealed room at the Dunn Unit to disabuse one
of their patients of the beliefs of a lifetime: her metabolism was fast, not slow. By
sealing the room and measuring the exact amount of oxygen she used, researchers
were able to show her that her metabolism was not the culprit. It wasn’t the answer she
expected and probably not the one she wanted but she took the news philosophically.
Although the metabolism myth has been completely disproved, science has far
from discounted our genes as responsible for making us whatever weight we are, fat or
thin. One of the world’s leading obesity researchers, geneticist Professor Stephen
O’Rahilly, goes so far as to say we are on the threshold of a complete change in the
way we view not only morbid (ốm yếu, bệnh tật) obesity, but also everyday
obesity can be caused by our genes. ‘These people are not weak-willed, slothful or
lazy,’ says Prof. O’Rahilly, ‘They have a medical condition due to a genetic defect and
major genetic defects may be rate, many people probably have minor genetic
variations that combine to dictate weight and are responsible for things such as how
much we eat, the amount of exercise we do and the amount of energy we need. When
you add up all these little variations, the result is that some people are genetically
predisposed to putting on weight. He says while the fast/slow metabolism debate may
have been settled, that doesn’t mean some other subtle change in the metabolism gene
able to ‘cure’ some forms of obesity but the only effective way for the vast majority of
overweight and obese people to lose weight is a change of diet and an increase in
exercise.
Despite the $500 million a year Australians spend trying to lose weight and the
$830 million it costs the community in health care, obesity is at epidemic proportions
here, as it is in all Western nations. Until recently, research and treatment for obesity
How the drugs worked was often not understood and many caused severe side effects

It has long been known that a part of the brain called hypothalamus is
responsible for regulating hunger, among other things. But it wasn’t until 1994 that
new direction by studying an obese mouse. Prof. Friedman found that unlike its thin
brothers, the fat mouse did not produce a hitherto unknown hormone called leptin.
Manufactured by the fat cells, leptin acts as a messenger, sending signals to the
hypothalamus to turn off the appetite. Previously, the fat cells were thought to be
responsible simply for storing fat. Prof. Friedman gave the fat mouse leptin and it lost
On the other side of the Atlantic, Prof. O’Rahilly read about this research with
great excitement. For many months two blood samples had lain in the bottom of his
freezer, taken from two extremely obese young cousins. He hired a doctor to develop a
test for leptin in human blood, which eventually resulted in the discovery that neither
of the children’s blood contained the hormone. When one cousin was given leptin, she
lost a stone in weight and Prof. O’Rahilly made medical history. Here was the first
proof that a genetic defect could cause obesity in humans. But leptin deficiency turned
out to be an extremely rare condition and there is a lot more research to be done before

The disease known as AIDS is a complicated illness that may involve several
phases. It is caused by a virus that can be passed from person to person. AIDS impairs
the human body’s immune system—the system responsible for warding off disease—
AIDS was first conclusively identified in the United States in 1981, when 189
cases were reported to the Centers for Disease Control. Within a decade the disease
had spread to virtually all populated areas of the world. In the United States alone
there are about 65,000 new cases every year. The origin of the AIDS virus is uncertain,
The first AIDS patients in the Americas and Europe were almost exclusively
male homosexuals. Later patients included those who used unsterilized intravenous
and others who had received blood transfusions; females whose sexual partners had
AIDS; and the children of such couples. However, since 1989, heterosexual sex was
found to be the fastest growing means of transmission of the virus, with 90 percent of

winning director Tony Richardson (1991). When basketball superstar Magic Johnson
announced in 1991 he had contracted tee AIDS virus, the feeling spread quickly that
anyone, not just particular groups of people, could be at risk. This was again
confirmed as tennis legend Arthur Ashe announced in 1992 that he had been infected
The AIDS virus. American researchers initially named the virus that causes
AIDS the human T-lymphotropic virus, type III—or HTLV-III. After researchers
discovered in the late 1980s that there were several forms of the AIDS virus, the
original virus was renamed the human immunodeficiency virus type 1, or HIV-1.
The virus enters the bloodstream and destroys certain white blood cells, called
T lymphocytes that play a key role in the functioning of the immune system. The virus
can also affect other types of cells in the body, including the immune-system cells
the virus. In fact, research has suggested that macrophases may carry the AIDS virus
What happens after infection. Most people recently infected by the AIDS
virus look and feel healthy. In some people the virus may remain inactive, and these
people act as carriers, remaining apparently healthy but still be able to infect others.
After a few years, some people may develop AIDS-related complex, or ARC. Its
symptoms may include fever, fatigue, weight loss, skin rashes, a fungal infection of
the mouth known as thrush, lack of resistance to infection, and swollen lymph nodes.
Sometimes the symptoms of ARC disappear, but the condition frequently goes on to
become AIDS. Though it can take up to 20 years after the virus is contracted for AIDS

quickly perishes outside the human body. Consequently, AIDS is not spread by casual
physical contact or by sneezing. The virus has been found in tears and saliva, but it
exists there in such low concentrations that transmission from these body fluids is
extremely rare. There are no known cases of AIDS transmission by insects such as
mosquitoes or by domestic animals. Studies show that the virus is usually passed to an

By 1987 the drug azidothymidine (AZT) had proved effective in slowing the

37,5% so với tổng số HS-SV mắc nghiện.

MANY RIVERS TO CROSS
As Vietnam opens its doors to welcome the world at large, many people have
no idea of the stunning visual beauty and traditional culture that lies beyond the
threshold. To many, the name Vietnam brings to mind only haunting images of a war-
torn land in some remote corner of Southeast Asia, an image which continues to be
exploited on the big screen and in print, and which remains deeply etched in the minds
of all who found themselves a part of that war and its aftermath. Beyond such images
lies the real Vietnam, a unique and fascinating land of great physical and rich cultural
diversity whose history spans over 4,000 years.
Picture a land of idyllic tree-lined beaches, tranquil bays dotted with the sails of
junks and sampans, offshore coral islands, mountains, valleys, primal forests, plains
crossed by counted rivers and emerald rice fields enriched with the varied scenes of
everyday life. The traditional rural life, embodied in the villagers tilling the land with
rudimentary tools under their conical hats in the patchwork paddy fields, and children
riding their water buffaloes home from the fields at the end of the day, contrasts
dramatically with the sights, sound and pace of the cities whose busy streets overflow
with humanity borne along on a rising tide of bicycles and motor scooters. Such are
the images of present-day Vietnam.
The country’s long history is an ever-present companion; the land is imbued
with it — sites of ancient battles, ancient civilizations and kingdoms which flourished
in this enigmatic land long before the French colonists and the tragic war of the more
recent past.
The changing tides of fortune that have swept over this country and its people
have left their mark, greatly emphasizing the contrast between past and present.
Much of Vietnam’s ancient past is shrouded in myths and legends of dragons
and kings, heroes and heroines, gods and deities, brought to life in the present in the
many colorful time-honored traditional festivals and rituals commemorating revered
ancestors, who are worshipped alongside Buddhist, Taoist and Hindu deities in the
thousands of temples and pagodas throughout the country.
In a traditionally agricultural country, so new to the concept of tourism that you
have to expect the unexpected, you won’t be disappointed.
CAREER ADVICE VITAL FOR GRADUATES
Universities and other training institutions should provide career orientation for
their students, experts told a workshop held last Saturday in HCM City. Dr Nguyen
Anh Hong of HCM City Social Sciences and Humanities University (HSSHU)
admitted it is not yet considered an important issue though some city universities and
colleges have set up centres to provide orientation and find jobs for students.
Dr Le Thi Thanh Mai of the Viet Nam National University of HCM City, said
she and her colleagues conducted a study on such centres and found only five
universities and colleges had them but even they did not attract many students.
"Most of them merely inform students about jobs and hold job fairs and fail to
provide career counselling," she said.
The HCM City University of Economics and Law even co-operates with
corporates like Dutch Lady Viet Nam, Sacombank, and Hoa Sen Group to provide
internship to its students, but fails when it comes to counselling.
Another study, this one of 200 students at the Viet Nam National University's
dormitory, found most of them worried about what job to pursue after graduation and
what skills they should learn, Mai said.
Dr Nguyen Thi Kim Loan, Hong's colleague, said employers also had a
responsibility to provide career guidance and not just educational institutions.
But the task should begin as early as 12th grade, continue through university,
with companies and universities holding forums regularly to guide students, she added.
Dang Duc Thanh, deputy chairman of the HCM City Enterprise Association,
said with career counselling and a choice of future career made, students were likely to
join short-term courses or even look for part-time employment in their field of choice
while still in college.
Hong said universities and colleges should also provide up-to-date information
on the labour market and employers' requirements so that students could equip
themselves with suitable skills.

UNIT 8. EDUCATION AND CULTURE
Primary school pupils in England could face formal tests at the age of seven -
and a pool of "elite teachers" will be recruited for struggling schools. Education
Secretary Nicky Morgan has announced a package of measures aimed at tackling (tìm
hướng giải quyết) underachievement. There will be a target requiring 90% of pupils to
take core academic subjects at GCSE. Head teachers' leaders warned a teacher
shortage in some subjects made that target "immensely challenging". Mrs Morgan said
more "robust and rigorous" checks on progress at the age of seven would help ensure
that all pupils had "mastered the basics" before they left primary school.
Recruiting teachers
At present, she said, there are 20 local authorities where most pupils do not
achieve five good GCSEs, including English and maths. The education secretary wants
to target areas with low achievement, such as coastal towns and some northern cities.
But Labour's shadow education secretary Lucy Powell said that rather than raising
pledge to create a National Teaching Service. This will recruit a pool of 1,500 high-
achieving teachers over five years who would be deployed to schools in areas with
weak results, such as coastal towns. There will be financial incentives for teachers to
join this project, with staff expected to stay for up to three years.
"Too many young people aren't being given a fair shot to succeed because of
where they live," said Mrs Morgan. "Coastal towns and rural areas struggle because
they struggle to recruit and retain good teachers, they lack that vital ingredient that

The education secretary has also signalled changes to the assessment system for
primary and secondary pupils. As well as the "baseline tests" when pupils start in
Reception and national curriculum tests, often known as Sats, taken at the age of 11,
present, there are teacher assessments, with schools sending their results to local
level, perhaps with external testing and the publication of results. "To be really
confident that students are progressing well through primary school, we will be
looking at the assessment of pupils at age seven to make sure it is as robust and
rigorous as it needs to be," said Mrs Morgan. There will be a consultation on changes,
with the aim of creating a clearer measure for how pupils are progressing through
primary school. In secondary school, there is clarification of the target that all pupils
will have to take traditional GCSE subjects, in the English baccalaureate. This requires
pupils to take GCSEs in English, maths, history or geography, two sciences and a
language. There will now be a target of 90% of pupils, which will allow exemptions to
be made by head teachers, such as for pupils with special needs. At present, about 39%
Mrs Morgan said it was "right that every child studies a strong academic core

subjects. It was unacceptable for adults to "write off" children's chances to take these

đã thảo luận sôi nổi Báo cáo dự thảo do lãnh đạo Bộ trình bày.

In most cases, that means women still do the majority of the child care and

other research. Just don’t tell fathers that. They are much more likely than mothers to

“You basically just always feel like you’re doing a horrible job at everything,”
Ms. Barnes said. “You’re not spending as much time with your baby as you want,
you’re not doing the job you want to be doing at work, you’re not seeing your friends

That tension is affecting American family life, Pew found. Fifty-six percent of

The survey also found that white parents were more than 10 percentage points
more likely to express stress than nonwhite parents. Historically, white and black
mothers have been more likely to work outside the home than Asian and Latina
mothers, and foreign-born mothers have been particularly likely to stay home, Pew has
found.
In 46 percent of all two-parent households, both parents work full-time,
according to Pew, up from 31 percent in 1970. The share of households with a mother
who stays home has declined to 26 percent from 46 percent. Pew surveyed a nationally
representative sample of 1,807 parents in every state on both landlines and cellphones.
Other data also show that working parents are the new norm. Sixty percent of
children now live in households where all the parents at home work at least part time,
up from 40 percent in 1965, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics and the White
The shift has economic implications. The median household income for a
family in which both parents work full time is $102,400, according to Pew, compared
with $84,000 when mothers work part time and $55,000 when they stay home.

priority more often than women’s did, though the majority said they were equal.

The ways parents spend their time at home have changed markedly over the
years. Government time-use data show that parents over all do less housework and
spend more time with their children than they used to.
The time men spend on paid work has decreased to 38.5 hours a week from 42
hours in 1965, while the time they spend on housework has doubled to 8.8 hours and
the time they spend on child care has tripled to over seven hours.
Still, women do much more, especially when it comes to the tasks of raising a
child, like managing their schedules and taking care of them when they are sick,
according to Pew. Fathers and mothers are much more likely to equally share in doing

UNIT 9. SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
By Saima Noreen
It’s true — since anything can be Googled, you don't remember as much. But
In the years since the world started going digital, one of the big changes has
been that we don’t need to remember very much. Why risk forgetting a partner’s
birthday or a dinner date with a close friend when you can commit the details to your
computer, laptop, smartphone or tablet and get a reminder at the appropriate time?
Paul McCartney gave a useful insight into this in an interview over the summer.
He claimed that back in the 1960s the Beatles may have written dozens of songs that
were never released because he and John Lennon would forget the songs the following
morning.
We would write a song and just have to remember it. And there was always the
risk that we’d just forget it. If the next morning you couldn’t remember it — it was
gone.
How different to the way he records now then, when he can “form the thing,
have it all finished, remember it all, go in pretty quickly and record it.”
With technology now well ingratiated into our everyday life, researchers have
been investigating the lasting impact that it is having on the way that we learn and
remember information. Some research has suggested that our reliance on technology
and the Internet is leading to “digital amnesia,” where individuals are no longer able to
In one study, for example, 1,000 consumers aged 16 and over were asked about
their use of technology. It found that 91 percent of them depended on the Internet and
digital devices as a tool for remembering. In another survey of 6,000 people, the same
study found that 71 percent of people could not remember their children’s phone
numbers and 57 percent could not remember their work phone number. This suggests
that relying on digital devices to remember information is impairing our own memory
systems.
But before we mourn this apparent loss of memory, more recent studies suggest
that we may be adapting. One such study from 2011 conducted a series of experiments
looking at how our memories rely on computers. In one of them, participants were
asked to type a series of statements, such as “an ostrich’s eye is bigger than its brain.”
Half of them were told that their documents would be saved, and half were told
that they would not. Everyone was then tested to see if they could remember what they
had typed. Those who had been told their work would be saved were significantly
that would be saved in specific folders. They were then asked to recall the statements
and the folders in which the files were located. Overall, they were better at recalling
the file locations than the statements. The conclusion from the two experiments?
Technology has changed the way we organize information so that we only remember
details which are no longer available, and prioritize the location of information over
This idea that individuals prioritize where information is located has led some
researchers to propose that digital devices and the Internet have become a form of
transactive memory. This idea, which dates back to the 1980s, refers to a group
information using a shared store of knowledge. This store of knowledge means that
individuals can access details that they may not know themselves by knowing that
another individual remembers it, thus enhancing what information is available to them
More recent research has extended this line of work and found that saving
information on a computer not only changes how our brains interact with it, but also
makes it easier to learn new information. In a study published last year, the
participants were presented with two files that each contained a list of words. They
were asked to memorize both lists. Half of the participants were asked to save the first
file before moving on to the next list, while the others had to close it without saving.
information from the second file if they had saved the previous file. This suggests that
In sum, anyone worrying that technology is wrecking one of our most important
abilities should take some reassurance from these findings. It doesn’t necessarily mean
that there is no cause for concern: for instance McCartney said in the same interview
that the songs in the 1960s that did make it to the recording studio were the most
memorable ones. So it is possible that the lack of technology made the Beatles better
songwriters.
But it may be that just as oral storytelling was usurped by the written word,
having digital devices to outsource our memories means that it is no longer necessary
for us to try to remember everything. And if we can now remember more with a little
help from our technology friends, that is arguably a great step forward. Rather than
worrying about what we have lost, perhaps we need to focus on what we have gained.
