ASSIGNMENT NO. 1 :: Traffic Characteristics

1. Define traffic engineering and explain its scope.


2. Enlist road user characteristics and explain PIEV Theory.
3. Enlist vehicular characteristics and explain how each static and dynamic characteristics
affect road dimension and design.
4. Describe rolling resistance, air resistance and grade resistance experienced by moving
vehicles.
5. From your residential area to your college campus, list out with reasons that how the
various road users and vehicular characteristics may affect traffic flow & its pattern
during your journey.
6. What is off-tracking? Also define skid and slip. How the braking capacity and braking
test are helpful to traffic engineer?
7. A vehicle travelling with a speed of 60 kmph was stopped within 3 seconds after
application of brakes. Find the average skid resistance.
8. Write your views about traffic characteristics study of (1) Vidhyanagar area of
Bhavnagar city, (2) Bhavnagar – Sanes short route (through cable-stayed bridge) into
your own words.
