1.1 Introduction
The selective braking system will preferentially be placed at the end of the track in front of
the brake belt. Only toboggans that run too fast are slowed down. The loading is taken
account of indirectly. The selective braking of the roller toboggans ensures an increased
safety standard for the toboggan run. Individual toboggans are prevented from running on to
the belt too fast.
The selective braking system does not release riders from their obligation to brake at the end
of the track and to drive at an appropriate speed in the station area.
Braking is electro-magnetic. Electro-magnets are installed in the track. These are switched
on in accordance with the measured velocities. As a toboggan passes an activated electro-
magnet, a metal braking blade – suspended underneath the vehicle – is attracted on to and
presses against the friction surface along the length of the magnet. The attractive force
creates a high friction and the toboggan is slowed. The braking effect ceases at once when a
magnet is switched off. The strength of the braking effect is determined by the number of
electro-magnets energised. The possibilities of regulating the braking effect depend
therefore
on the number of magnets in the system.
The number and distribution of the magnets in each braking sector can very according to the
configuration of the toboggan run. The first braking sector is always smaller than the socond.
The second sector has, at present, at least six electro-magnets. This ensures that the
braking
effect can be measured out in a sufficient number of steps.
The selective braking system consists of two independent brake sectors. The velocity of the
Toboggan is measured before each sector.
The first sector has fewer magnets and serves mainly to establish the kinetic energy of the
Toboggan [indirect weight measurement]. If the approach velocity of the toboggan exceeds a
Set value, magnets in the first sector are energised. The number depends on the velocity.
The velocity of the toboggan is reduced according to its kinetic energy.
Next the velocity is measured before the second sector, determining again how many
magnets
Must be energised here. Thus the toboggan is slowed to the desired velocity.
The second brake sector reacts automatically according to the loading of the toboggan.
The following extreme cases and their relevant braking reaction have been identified:
- slow toboggans
- neither or the two brake sectors are activated
- the toboggans pass unhindered over the brake sectors
All intermediate cases are interpolated. The approach velocity which triggers activation can
be set separately for each magnet. Thus the braking effect can be adjusted exactly in
accordance with the velocity. Allowances can be made for local conditions, such as the
length
of the station, gradients etc.
1.3 Controls
The control of the electro-magnets and the evaluation of the light barriers is carried out by a
Siemens SPS S7.All adjustments of the selective braking system can be made with a
programme display. The trigger velocity can be adjusted for each magnet in 1 km/h steps.
The display shows the velocity at each light barrier.
The control gear can store several parameter sets and recall them with a selection switch.
In addition, a third light barrier, located behind the brake sectors, is evaluated to control the
velocity of entry to the brake belt. This value is important during the installation of the
selective braking system to make the adjustment of the braking effect easier.
This light barrier can also be used to identify faults. When a toboggan runs too fast on to the
brake belt, a fault signal is triggered, as the selective braking system did not produce the
desired braking effect.

Failure of the selective braking system “downward” [i.e. too few magnets energised, faulty
magnet etc.] is checked through the entry velocity at the brake belt. If a toboggan enters too
quickly a fault is shown and signalled optically or audibly. The toboggan run is not shut
down as no further dangers are created.
An “upward” failure [e.g. all magnets are energised] is separately monitored by the
hardware.
This case is prevented, as the braking effect would be too great for light toboggans.
To assist the monitoring of the magnets the energised periods are set differentially. This
Prevents the simultaneous activation of all the magnets during regular, fault free operation.
The fault monitoring now checks the energy at each separate magnet, completely
Independently of the SPS and rest of the hardware. If all magnets are energised
Simultaneously the braking control is switched off at once.
The first and the last magnet of each braking sector are interdependent. Apart from the first,
the other magnets are controlled with adjustable intervals [1/10sec steps]. The magnets are
switched off after a set time. The standard setting is 1 sec.
The energised time is calculated for the first magnet in each brake sector. The minimum
energised time required is based on the toboggan velocity and the distance between the light
barrier and the first magnet.
At a velocity of 10m/sec the magnet must therefore be energised for max. 100ms. After
100ms the toboggan has passed this magnet.
The last magnet of the brake sector is now switched dependent on the first. If the control
Logic requires that the first and the last magnets of a brake sector must b energised, the last
One is switched on only after the first is switched off.
Simultaneous energising of all of the magnets can occur only because of a hardware or
software failure.

With the delivered display it is possible to program the selective brake. As standard the
display shows the speed at last measured at the three measurement points.
Faulty measurements (e.g. when a toboggan stops in the measurement area) are indicated
on the display with a short-termed error number. Subsequently the measurement points are
initialized new and will show the figures again.
It is possible to assign the onset limit to each single magnet. This can be made by setting of
the speed data in km/h. The speed set determines from which measured speed on the
magnet will be activated.
The set up onset period determines how long the magnet will be activated. The onset period
is valid for one braking area at a time.
The base parameters of the control unit set up in the factory must not be changed.
There are 3 preprogrammed data sets and one variable data set available in the control unit.
The selection can be choosen by the rotary switch.
Only data set 4 can be changed. When rotary switch is in the position 1 / 2 / 3 only the fix set
up parameters are active. But the programmed data of data set 4 are still available.

When control unit is switched on the display shows the starting lines. When the display
shows W in the lower left corner you must press F1 .
The control unit is in the programming status now.
One after another the following questions will be asked. After confirming each parameter the
indication changes to the next parameter.
1. Magnet on BS1
at v>#### km/h -Z-
to change the data:
-> ENTER -> / -> ENTER
2. Magnet on BS1
at v>#### km/h -Z-
to change the data:
-> ENTER -> / -> ENTER
According to this diagram all magnets of the selective brake are questioned. It starts with the
questions for braking area 1 (BS1), then followed by braking area 2 (BS2). It must be taken
in consideration that the numbering of each magnet results the brake conveyor.
After the question for the last magnet of the braking area 2 the questions for the set on
period for braking area 1 and 2 will follow.
max. on period
magnets BS1 #.## s
to change the data:
-> ENTER -> / -> ENTER
max. on period
magnets BS2 #.## s
to change the data:
-> ENTER -> / -> ENTER
faktor on period
magnet #.#
confirm with -> ENTER -> ENTER (do NOT change data)
Now the display changes to the standards an the selective brake is active to the values set up.

After switch on , the facility had to notify the following advert in display after a short starting
period:
Servicing summary
3.2 Toboggan
The feathers condition of the swordsuspension had to inspect daily. Replace broken or
overstretched feathers.
It displays, that by passage the photoelectric barrier 1 sending no signal (other numbers
corresponding)
If this error message shown single, the photoelectric barrier function with the error
generating toboggan needs to inspect. For this push
the toboggan slowly trough the mess stretch and control the seize by photoelectric barrier.
Should the occasion arise adjust the photoelectric barriers.During the passage LED`s
mustn`t flicker.
If the error message shown constant, it means like a defective or deadjust photoelectric
barrier.
First use the manual for the sensors above of this introduction.
By renewed adjustment the function of the photoelectric barrier not existing it had to
replace.
Overtime
E.0.1 no signal -Q-
It displays that the photoelectric barrier 1 (E0.0) is interrupted and after 1,5 seconds no
signal send to the photoelectric barrier 2 (E0.1).
It means like a extreme slowly or standing toboggan.
