Contemporary Art is the art of today, produced by artists who are living in
the 21st century. It mirrors culture and society, offering individuals a rich resource
through which to consider current ideas and rethink the familiar. Contemporary
Art is sometimes described as diverse and eclectic.

Diverse and eclectic, means that art is distinguished by the very lack of a

explore ideas, concepts, questions, and practices that examine the past, describe
the present, and imagine the future

It also provides opportunity to reflect on society and the issues relevant to

the community where we belong as an individual.

This lesson will deepen your understanding on the different contemporary

and how it is defined. Artists today explore ideas, concepts,
questions, and practices that examine the past, describe the
present, and imagine the future

For you to understand the lesson well, do the following activities.

Have fun and good luck!

Activity 1: Read Me! Understand Me!

Directions: Read the art forms description and characteristics. Understand what
you are reading.
1. Visual Arts during the American period shifted from rural to urban
themes. After the World War II, artists started creating proletarian art
which depicts the life after the war, social issues and other economic
problems.
There were stylistics arts and drawings including thematic artworks
reflecting historical, social, economic and political themes. It has
developed and transformed through the years and that, different
mediums were also employed in art making.
The significant development in the country shows how creative,
innovative and free thinkers the Filipinos are.
It was during American period when Paris Cubism characterized by
fragmented figures in larger planes, color harmonies and texture, took
the scene.

2.
Contemporary Philippine Literature was a mixture of variety of subjects
and product of different innovative techniques of writers. Poetry emerged
and that, publication of young poets to campus journals flourished.
The works of American and British poets influences the English
poems in the Philippines and many writers aroused because of the
Martial Law.
They wrote poems containing social issues and nationalistic poetry
became dominant. It discussed poverty, inequality, political turmoil, and
other social problems during the Marcos era.
“BAGAY” Movement became famous (a kind of poetry that uses
colloquial language and it is built on concrete images which tend to
describe experiences).
Vernacular language was also used in short stories and writers
produced more social conscious fiction during 1970s depicting the lives
of working class and that social protest fiction was produced during the
Marcos era.
Novelists continued to write after WWII with sociopolitical themes
and focused on the search for identity and essayists on the other hand,
produced literary criticism and women writers developed informal essay.

3. MUSIC of the country was mostly classical during the American period
due to the influence of the European.
In the 1960s the avant-garde music emerged, and that Philippine
music evolved into a combination of classical and traditional or ethnic
music.
Pinoy Pop or the Filipino pop music took place as Philippine music
continuously evolved. It covers different forms like jazz, dance hits,
folksong revival, rock and roll, rap, etc. Manila sound was born due to
the development of Pinoy pop.
OPM or Original Pilipino Music which was kind of music purely
written and sung by Filipino composers and singers became popular.
Folk balladeers introduced/influenced alternative music. This type of
music includes themes like Filipino values, political and environmental
concerns and other societal themes.
At present, different music genre like pop, rock, OPM, indigenous
music, jazz, rap became a mixture of different genre like ethnic rock and
many other forms that exist in the music industry and the, rock bands
and pops stars entered the limelight.

4. STAGE
SHOW/THEATRE was introduced by the Americans. The Bodabil during
American period was not a form of stage play since it was composed
Melodrama was included in the Bodabil during the Japanese period.
American then established the education system in the country and
paved way to the development of legitimate theater.
Through proper western education, the production of plays like
Shakespearean and other Western Contemporary classics entered the
scene.
Philippine theater was Americanized. However, Filipinos later were
able to expand their horizon and create stage plays that reflect
Philippine realities and set up because of the exposure to different
theatrical styles and dramatic theories. And Filipino artists started to
experiment traditional theater forms like sarzuela, comedia and
senakulo.
Philippine Contemporary Theatre had a style composed of
psychological and social realism. Psychological realism deals with the
problems of individuals while Social realism deals with the problems of
individuals considering their society.

Presentational style highlights discussion of social ideas and made

use of different methods like dance, song, mime, etc. to summon ideas
from the audience. This style was employed during the Marcos regime
since realistic portrayal was prohibited.
Documentary style tends to discuss historical events.
Dula-dulaan which is a short drama - poem was another form of
theater art. Among different theater art forms today includes musicals
with contemporary themes, dance dramas employing ethnic music and
choreography, plays mixing realistic and non-realistic styles and
traditional drama forms with contemporary messages.

5. DANCING specifically Vaudevile or Bodabil became popular during the

first years of American period. It is a kind of stage show introduced by
Americans. There are dances like buck-and-wing, tap dancing, clog and
skirt dancing that were performed in the show.
Modern dance was revolutionary in nature and does not conform to
the rules of classical ballet. It deals with a mixture of wide range of
dances: Western and Asian dances, traditional dances and other
experimental dances. It continues to live with more techniques and
innovations.
Figure 8. The dancing quartet from the Bohol Dance Project Company

Folk dance and social dance followed the rise of modern dance. This
was integrated in the educational system when Francisca Reyes-Aquino,
a researcher on Phil. Folk dances entered the Bureau of Education
which resented to its widespread popularity.
Dance groups developed Filipino adaptations of European and
American dances like valse, rigodon, polka, fundango, jota, etc. and
integrated them into traditional customs.
Other dance revived indigenous dance forms commonly performed
during rituals and ceremonies by the indigenous groups.
People on the regions still performs traditional and folk dances
especially in fiestas and festivals like Sinulog, Masskara, Ati-Atihan,
Sayaw sa Obando, Kadayawan and many other festivals.

6. ARCHITECTURE in the Philippines is simple, rational and functional.

Philippine Architecture adopted the modern Western architectural
style during the American colonial and contemporary period while taking
into consideration the physical and socio-cultural situation of the
country.
Young Filipinos who studied abroad specifically in American
universities and institutes brought changes in the country as they came
back in the early 20th century. They introduced the neo classic style in
building structures and lead to revive the classic architecture.
“Tsalet” was developed in the early 20 th century. It is a type of a
house on stilts with a front porch made of wood and concrete.
Steel was also used in building as protection for calamities and
earthquakes.
Real – estate development took its lace after the WWII and the
country departed from the native tradition. Two-storey houses were also
introduced and a Filipino house was considered Americanized.
Expressways, convention centers, hospitals, hotels, malls, high-rise
buildings, amusement center, etc. were built starting from the Marcos
era.
All these came with technological advancements like escalators,
elevators, computers, etc.
Residential houses, churches, public markets and business space in
the regional set up tend to imitate the architectural styles in the urban.
It is when eco-cultural tourism was introduced and heritage
preservation was made in the heritage towns like Vigan, Intramuros,
Dapitan and many others.

7. FILM Industry through the initiatives of foreign businessmen started in

1897.
It became more popular in the year, 1912 when foreigners Edward
Gross and Harry Brown produced the film about Dr. Jose Rizal’s life.
Philippine film during the early times was greatly influenced by
Hollywood. However, Filipino producers cannot level with the quality of
movies made by Americans due to limited budget and technology.
Films which portrayed the lives of Filipinos and used Tagalog as its
medium garnered more audience since most Filipinos cannot
understand English during those times.
Film production was influenced by theater forms like sarzuela,
senakulo and comedia.
Philippine Literature was another source of movie theme. Such
themes were film adaptation of the works of Francisco Baltazar’s
Florante at Laura, Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
Filmmakers were inspired by other literary sources like novels and
folklores.
Movie production started in the year 1942 and Filipinos went back to
watching and producing stage shows but after the war, it resumed.
Big Four or the 4 Film Studios became prominent during 1950s.
These are LVN, Sampaguita, Lebran and Premiere.

Film
Awards were also instituted like the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and
Sciences (FAMAS) and Maria Clara Award.

Filipino movies directors and producers started to be recognized

internationally.
During Marcos regime, the government regulated filmmaking and
established the Board of Censorship Motion Pictures (BCMP) wherein
film script had to be submitted prior to production.
New cinema rose during the Marcos era. Their themes revolved
around nationhood, love in hostile setting and social issues.
Alternative cinema or independent films were produced by other
filmmakers. They produced movies through lightweight technologies and
their usual screening venues are schools, international film festivals and
outreach programs.
In the contemporary period, Philippine film revolved around a variety
of subjects and themes like martyr wife, superhero, action, melodramas,
comedies, etc.
Among all the art forms, film has the largest audience.
