Introduction
This is the Setup and User Guide for the Run in Panel. The Run
in Panel is used to test MGUs and DGUs before and during
installation.
To find information in this guide look at the contents list at the
beginning of the guide.
The Guide is split into three sections:
■ Section 1: Introduction
■ Section 2: User Information
■ Section 3: Appendices
Introduction
General Description
Part number PWLA0008
The Run in Panel is a small self contained portable unit for
testing a down-hole WellLIFT system (WellLIFT-E and WellLIFT-
H). It can be used during field operations and in test labs or
workshop environments.
The WellLIFT Run in Panel is designed to allow continual
logging during installation using a built in rechargeable battery,
decode electronics and short range radio modem. The Run in
Panel is housed in a compact and durable case that can be
strapped to the inside of a cable drum.
The internal electronics are the same as those used in the HVI
Panel, so the LEDs (Tool, Heartbeat and Transmit) used to
display information work in the same way.
Basic Operation
The Run in Panel allows you to log data during bench testing
and installation of WellLIFT gauges.
This unit is designed for use with DC only and MUST NOT be used as a
substitute for the HVI panel for a field installation. There are no AC
blocking components used inside this panel, it is only designed to work
on a system that is isolated from the motor drive / supply panel.

Safety Recommendation
WellLIFT equipment should be installed, adjusted and serviced
by qualified electrical maintenance personnel. Improper
installation or operation of the equipment may cause injury to
personnel or equipment. This equipment must be installed and
grounded in accordance with local and national electrical codes.
Potentially lethal voltages exist within the Run in Panel. Extreme care
must be taken to ensure the power switch on eth Run in Panel is off
before beginning installation, maintenance and repair jobs.
Stored Energy
The Run in Panel contains 2 x 12V sealed lead acid gel batteries
wired in series; they have a capacity of 24 volts @ 7.5 Ah.
These battery cells are designed for use in all orientations and
are self-venting/ self healing design.
Care should be taken when using or charging the unit.
The Battery line is fused and there is external access to the
fuse.
Wait for 30 seconds after switching off the master power switch, before
removing the crocodile clips from the MGU or simulator connections.
Gauge Connection
The Run in Panel is only intended for use with Motor Gauge
units (MGUs) or WellLIFT down-hole simulators. The power
supply available from the Run in Panel is matched to the
required input voltage of the MGU unit. NO OTHER GAUGE
should be directly connected to the Run in Panel. Irreversible
damage will be caused to all other types of auxiliary gauges
(discharge, flow etc.) used with WellLIFT as they operate at a
much lower voltage level.
If you want to check an auxiliary gauge, for example a DGU, you
must connect an MGU to the Run in Panel then connect the
auxiliary gauge to the MGU to draw power from its Electronic
connection point.
Ensure the case lid is open while the batteries are charging; the
Run in Panel must not be sealed airtight when the batteries are
being charged. The batteries we use do not vent during normal
charging cycles, but under fault conditions, i.e. if over charged or
charged too quickly, will vent to prevent explosion. At this point
explosive gasses are emitted and these must not be stored in an
airtight container.
The batteries may only be serviced by returning the unit to the
manufacturer.
Display Options
The Run in Panel decodes the gauge data and outputs a serial
RS232 data stream in the same format as the HVI panel. From
this point the data can be displayed on any standard display
equipment used with the WellLIFT system:
■ Standard PC / laptop using Commissioner software
■ GCS display (standard WellLIFT stand alone surface display
package).
Charging
The batteries MUST NOT be charged in a sealed environment. Place the
Run in Panel in a well ventilated area and open the case lid.
We recommend that you only charge the Run in Panel using the
supplied charger.
The unit should be fully charged before you start using it.
Typically, to charge completely, this takes between 12 and 16
hours when you use the supplied charger. You can use the Run
in Panel while it is charging from the mains, but this increases
the time it takes to fully charge the batteries.
Always fully charge the battery before using the Run in Panel,
you cannot charge the batteries while it is fixed inside the drum.
The modems are matched items; the modem inside the Run in
Panel only operates with the supplied PC wireless modem. This
allows a number of Run in Panels to be used in close proximity
to each other. The modems are configured to work as a pair (the
modem in the Run in Panel and the loose PC modem) at the
point of manufacture and each modem has a unique
identification code. Because of this, if either needs to be
Initial Checks
Before installing the equipment, check the unit for:
• Visible damage to the shipping container or case.
• Packing materials. Remove all packing materials such as
tape, foam, shipping restraints and padding.
• Physical damage to equipment.
All necessary precautions should be taken to ensure
integrity of environmental seals and electrical connections.
To check the Run in Panel before you start to use it, you need
an MGU simulator. Refer to Testing a Down-hole Gauge
Simulator on page 20 for instructions on how to connect to a
simulator.
Safety – MGU
As lethal voltages may be present, WellLIFT equipment
should be installed, adjusted and serviced by qualified
electrical maintenance personnel. Before beginning any
work, ensure power has been disconnected and locked out.
WARNING: A high integrity ground MUST be attached to
the case of the MGU at all times when it is powered. Failure
to make this connection will result in the MGU metal case rising
to the supply voltage; this is typically over 150V DC. The MGU
ground must also have a bonded wire to the case of the surface
equipment used to test the gauge to stop potential differences
between the two occurring and completing the signal return
path.
Although built as a rugged piece of equipment, the MGU
contains delicate pieces of electronic instrumentation and
should be handled as such. Proper handling should be
exercised to ensure no extreme shock or electrical
interference (static).
Testing an MGU
1. Set the Run in Panel up (see Conducting a Test using the
Run in Panel on page 15 for details) and then connect the
Gauge loom to the MGU:
a. Connect the black crocodile clip to the MGU Body
b. Connect the crimp and wire assembly to the HV (Centre)
pin on the MGU centre
c. Connect the red crocodile clip to the wire end of the
crimp and wire assembly on the MGU.
When all the connections are made, secure the test area with suitable
warnings for the hazards present.
When all the connections are made, secure the test area with suitable
warnings for the hazards present.
Modems
Before you use the radio modems, check to see if you need a permit for
them.
LEDs
The red LED (OPR) lights steadily when power is applied, and
flashes or dims when data is transmitted.
The green LED (LNK) lights steadily when the wireless link is
working.
Baud rate
The Bluetooth wireless modem can run at up to 115.2 Kbps, but
the Run in Panel comms use 9600 baud only.
Power
The modem may be powered in two ways:
1. Using the supplied USB power cable. Connect the USB end
to a spare USB port on the laptop, or PC, you are using for
these tests, and the other end to the DC In socket on the
side of the modem, see Figure 5.
2. Using an AC/DC converter (Output Power: +5 to +12Vdc /
300mA).

User Maintenance
General
As lethal voltages may be present, the Run in Panel should be
installed, used and adjusted by qualified electrical maintenance
personnel.
The only user serviceable parts in the Run in Panel are the
fuses. If there are any other faults, then the unit should be
returned to ProductionQuest for repair or replacement.
Although the unit is fitted in a Peli case the connections at the
back of the case are not airtight so the case is no longer
waterproof.

IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS
As lethal voltages may be present, the Run in Panel should be installed,
used and adjusted by qualified electrical maintenance personnel.
WARNING
Lethal voltages are present within the case and on the crocodile clips
when input power is applied.
Troubleshooting
There are no user serviceable parts inside the case of the Run
in Panel.
If the LEDS do not light when the master power switch is set to
on, check the following:
1. Check that the batteries are charged; see Charging the Run
in Panel on page 11.
2. Check and replace the fuses if necessary;
○ Battery = 5A, is the main battery fuse.
○ Wireless = 2A is the isolation fuse for the wireless
modem.
You can remove the wireless modem fuse and replace the
carrier empty if the modem cannot be used. This stops the
modem being powered up even if the selection switch is
moved to wireless.
If the LEDs still do not light, then you must return the panel to
ProductionQuest for repair or replacement.

LEDs
There are three LEDs on the rear of the Run in Panel. These
give a visual diagnostic of the system’s performance across the
HV power link.
Name Colour Description
Transmit Yellow Goes ON/OFF (flickers) when the Run in Panel
sends a data packet.
Tool Green Goes ON/OFF each time a valid gauge data
packet is decoded.
It takes approximately one minute before the
green LED starts to indicate valid data
Heartbeat Red Pulses at different rates to indicate the condition
of the on board processing of gauge data:
○ Slow (approximately every 4 seconds) shows
that the Run in Panel is idle
○ Fast (approximately every 1 second) second
when gauge data is received (data
transmissions on the line)
If the pulse rate for this LED is more than 2 a
second, this shows excessive noise on the line.
