Answer to the question No.1(i)

Kumargaon Powerplant’s efficiency = 88% of Shabazpur powerplant.

Shahbazpur Powerplant efficiency = 55% of Carnot Engine efficieny
= 0.55 × (1-(Tcold / Theat ))
= 0.55 × (1-((150+273)/(898+273)))
= 0.35
Now,Kumargaon powerplant’s thermal efficiency = 0.88 × 0.35
= 0.31
= (0.31×100)%
= 31%

Answer to the question No.1(ii)

So, the best way to increase the 5% efficiency of the plant is to lower the temperature of cold reservoir while
keeping the temperature of hot reservoir constant. Because another way is to increase the temperature of hot
reservoir , but that is more costly than the first one.
But if we observe it mathematically
We will find ,
31%+5% = 0.55×0.88×(1-(Tcold –THot))
So, keeping the Thot constant we will find , Tcold = 27⸰ centigrade.
But while keeping the cold reservoir constant we will find, Thot = 1378⸰ centigrade.
So, increase the temperature to 1378 needs more fuel, which will cost many that lowering temperature of cold
reservoir to 27 degree.

Answer to the question No.1(iii)

Usage of Waste Heat,

• We can use the heat to produce the steam to run the turbine.
• It can be used for any internal heat building process.
• We can use it to heat the water and supply it to homes.

Answer to the question N0.2

At 1255 kpa,
Hl = 807 kJ/kg
Hv = 2784.1 kJ/kg
So, from the equation we get,
Hq = Hl + 0.95(Hv – Hl)
Hq = 2685 kJ/kg

So, at 174.65 kpa pressure and with 2685 kJ/kg enthalpy the temperature is 100 degree celcius.
Thus , It will be a saturated steam.
Solution:
So, the supplied steam is at 1255kpa of 95% quality, and also in saturated condition.
So, for 1255kpa pressure,
Specific enthalpy of saturated steam Hv = 2785.31 kJ/kg
Specific enthalpy of saturated water Hl = 807.563 kK/kg
Now, from vapor quality equation we get = Hv × .95 + (1-.95)Hl
= (2785.31×.95)+(1-.95)807.563
= 2686.42265 kJ/kg
Now, steam of 174.65kpa and enthalpy of 2686.42 kJ/kg has a temperature of 100 degree centigrade.
That’s why after throttling it will be a saturated steam.
