Psychoanalysis

of Thanos

By Ramish Ahmed
The Mad Titan
• Thanos is a native of the planet Titan. He first appeared in the movie
Avengers Assemble.
• Thanos realised that Titan was in danger because it was overpopulated
and the resources were limited. He suggested that by eliminating half the
population of the planet the crisis will come to an end.
• The inhabitants of the planet told him that he was a madman for thinking
that way. Later, Titan suffered from mass extinction and was destroyed
completely. Thanos believed that the whole universe suffers from the
same problem and set out to eliminate half the universe’s population
(Marvel, 2018).
Thanos’s Disorders
• Thanos has narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Narcissistic
personality disorder is a psychiatric illness in which individuals have
an exaggerated sense of their own value, a strong desire for undue
affection and praise, troubled relationships, and a lack of sympathy for
others (Mayo Clinic, 2017).
• Thanos is also a sociopath. A sociopath is a term used to describe those
with an antisocial personality disorder (APSD). People with ASPD
can’t understand others’ feelings. They will also breach the rules or
make impulsive decisions without feeling bad for the damage they
inflict.
Symptoms of NPD in Thanos
• Thanos is actively seeking to satisfy his inner emptiness. He has a
squad that supports him, to compliment him and give him endless
gratitude. This provides insight into the deeper desire of Thanos, to be
admired by all in the world.
• He escapes guilt by boasting about his exploitative acts of capturing
his daughter Gamora after murdering half of her home world and later
being confronted by Gamora. He also describes the assassination of
her family and planet as “salvation”.
• Before he throws Gamora off a cliff, she tells him, “You love no one”,
this also shows that he has NPD (Ingram, 2018).
Symptoms of ASPD in Thanos
• Thanos ignored Gamora's rights when he sacrificed her. He killed her
with no regret because he felt that his goals were worth more than the
life of his daughter (Ingram, 2018).
• Thanos is violating the interests of his daughter's nebula when he
transforms her into a cyborg by cutting bits off of her and replacing
them with artificial parts and by making his daughter Gamora into a
flawless assassin.
• He basically doesn’t care about their feelings and want to use them for
his own good (Ballesteros, 2018).
Conclusion
• In conclusion, Thanos, AKA mad
purple dude, is a sociopathic
narcissist. His actions in the movies
Avengers Endgame and Infinity War
tells us that he has NPD and ASPD.
• He also enjoys killing people,
because he could clearly use the Thanos killing Vision to acquire the mind stone
infinity stones to double the (Marvel Studios, 2018).
universe’s resources instead of
killing half the population.
