Grade 9 Science:

Genetic Information and

Non-Mendelian Inheritance
October 27, 2020
Sir Albert Briongos
Please standby,
The class will start in a few
moments .
Good Day Everyone!
Welcome to our Grade 9
Science Class!

3
Prayer
Lord, Creator of all beings, we thank you for another day to
serve you and glorify you. Lord we ask for your guidance to
keep us safe in our respective homes, make our heart at peace
with all the challenges we are experiencing nowadays and may
you give us wisdom to learn the things for today. Give us a
willing heart, an open mind and hopeful spirit for things to
come. We ask this through Christ our Lord amen.
DAILY ROLL CALL

Once your name is called, open your mic and camera

and say PRESENT!

Our Mantra for Learning
I don’t know everything and that’s okay.
I will do my best to learn something for today.
I will ask if I don’t understand something.
And I will make use the best of my time
To have an Open heart and Open Mind.
I CAN DO THIS!!!
When we are having our
Virtual Classroom, always BE READY
Respectful during class period
Early or 5 mins before time
Attentive and participative
Decent or appropriate clothes
You try to find a good place to study
Throwback Testing:
Let us test our memory if we still
remember our previous lesson about
Respiratory and Circulatory System.

Complete the table below by naming what organ is shown in the pictures,
classifying which system they belong, and determining their functions.

Pre-Understanding.

about Genetics assigned in our
google classroom.

11
Our Goals for today!
✘ Describe chromosome
✘ Differentiate gene from a DNA according to structure and
location
✘ Identify the components of the DNA molecule
✘ Explain the incomplete dominance pattern of inheritance and
codominance

Genetics
It is the study of heredity
Heredity
It is the process wherein a parent passes
certain genes onto their children or
offspring.
Every child inherits genes from both of
their biological parents and these genes in
turn express specific traits.

DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID
DNA is a molecule that
encodes an organism’s
genetic blueprint. In other
words, DNA contains all of
the information required to
build and maintain an
organism.

Nucleotide
-The basic unit or building block of nucleic acids (DNA or RNA)
-Composed of 3 components: Phosphate group, Sugar base,
nitrogenous bases

GENES
A gene is the basic
physical and functional
unit of heredity.
Genes are made up of
DNA
Genes are used to
create PROTEINS

CHROMATIN

CHROMATID

CHROMOSOME

37
-DNA needs to be compacted or compressed to save space and to avoid
tangling from other DNA.
-When DNA condenses or compresses it turns into
CHROMATIN CHROMATID CHROMOSOME
-Humans have 46 CHROMOSOMES INSIDE THEIR BODY CELLS (Except
sex cells)
38
39
40
-The 46 chromosomes in humans can be paired based on its size and
centromere location. So we can also say that there are 23 PAIRS OF
CHROMOSOMES IN HUMANS
-The first 22 chromosomes are called as AUTOSOMES
-The last pair (23rd Pair) is called as SEX CHROMOSOMES which
determines the SEX OF THE INDIVIDUAL
XX- FEMALE XY-MALE
41
Genes

✘ Units of information
about specific traits

✘ Passed from parents

to offspring

✘ Each has a specific

location (locus) on a
chromosome
Alleles
✘ Different molecular forms of a gene

✘ Arise by mutation

✘ Dominant allele masks a recessive allele that is paired with it

Allele Combinations

✘ Homozygous
✗ having two identical
alleles at a locus
✗ AA or aa

✘ Heterozygous
✗ having two different
alleles at a locus
✗ Aa
Genotype & Phenotype
✘ Genotype refers to particular genes an individual carries

✘ Phenotype refers to an individual’s observable traits

✘ Cannot always determine genotype by observing phenotype
