The following subscales, which assist in interpreting the results from the standard cli lical
scales, were scored. Note that in all instances raw scale scores were used and t· at a
2-standard deviation discrepancy from the male population mean was used for I :ase
definitions.
1. Wiener (1948) Obvious and Subtle Scales for Clinical Scales 2, 3, 4, 6, and 9
These scales were developed by grouping items from each of these scales into thOSEi that
are "easy to detect as indicating emotional disturbance" (obvious), and those that are
"relatively difficult to detect" (subtle). As Dahlstrom, Welsh, and Dahlstrom (1972) notE! "In
general, those subjects who are showing more severe forms of psychopathology teld to
endorse the obvious items more than they do the subtle ones, while persons with rr i Ider
forms of maladjustment will endorse primarily subtle items in their feelings and reacticI1S."
(p. 187) Subjects who may be attempting to present a pathological profile may also! i lOW
higher obvious scores than subtle scores.

4. Welsh Anxiety (A) and Repression (R) Factor Scales (Welsh, 1956)
On the basis of factor analysis of the basic validity and clinical scale, Welsh develOJed
these two scales to assess the two basic dimensions underlying the entire MMPI. -ligh
scores on the A scale are generally associated with increasing unhappiness and amiety.
High scores on the R scale are generally associated with increasing internalization, COI1:rol,
and submissiveness. Thirty-nine items make up the A scale, and 40 the R scale. For t- e A
scale, the mean for males is 11.28, and the standard deviation, 7.37. For the R scale, the
mean for males is 11.59 and the standard deviation, 3.90.
I
5. Tryon, Stein, and Chu (1966) 80dy Symptom (8s) and Tension (Te) Scales
These two scales were based on a factor analysis of the individual MMPI items. We cl, Dse J
these two scales because of their relevance to specific hypotheses being addressed ir this
study. The Body Symptom (Bs) scale includes 33 items; the mean is 5.33, and the stan :ard
j
deviation, 4.77. The Tension (Te) scale includes 36 items. The mean is 8.57, anc the
standard deviation, 5.23.

9. MacAndrew (1965) Alcoholism Scale
This scale was developed to differentiate alcoholics from nonalcoholic psychiatril~ patients.
Higher scores represent a higher probability of alcohol abuse. This scale has 49 items, the
mean for males is 19.52, standard deviation, 3.58.
10. Drug Abuse Scale (Panton and Brisson, 1971)
This 36-item scale was developed to identify subjects with drug abuse prot l ems. The
mean for males is 12.02, standard deviation, 2.66.
11. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale (PTSD) (Keane, et al. 1984)
This scale was developed on inpatient veterans to identify those with PTSD. A clitoff score
of 30 on this 60-item scale was considered the most effective criterion for identifyir! I inpatient
veterans with PTSD.
CODE TYPES
Because some research results have suggested that differential diagnostic funci ons could
best be carried out by using multiple-scale analysis, configural analysis in the fo '1 n of code
types was developed as an additional interpretative procedure. Two different appr::>aches to
code type development were undertaken. The primary approach was to identify HI subjects
who had T-scores equal to or greater than 70 on only one clinical scale (single p 3aks) and
on two, three, or four clinical scales. For analysis, subjects who had elevated scom:; on more
than four scales were placed in the "other" category. A review of all of the pos~ible code
types, both in elevation order and in scale order, showed very low prevalence:; for many
combinations. Because of this finding, only those code types that had at least 10 ; ubjects in
them were further evaluated.
l
I In addition to the above approach, we evaluated all profiles, using the Gilberst3.dt-Duker
l (1965) profile prototypes. These prototypes included the 123, 1234, 1237, 132, 137, 138,
139, 27, 274, 278, 4, 43, 49, 78, 8123, 824, 86, 89, and 9. Because the criteria for these
prototypes are so specific, very few YES veterans' profiles fell into one of these c:lde types.
Code types are difficult to interpret. The following descriptions represent only IJ rief labels
! for various combinations:
~ 12/21-anxious, tense, nervous, somatic discomfort and pain although no e'v i jence for
I organic basis, dysphoria.
r 13/31-psychophysiological disorders, conversion symptoms, immaturity, lack p:;ycholog
ical insight.
t 14/41-may have alcohol problems, pessimistic, hypochondriacal symptoms.
18/81-may have bottled-up hostility and aggression, socially inadequate, possihle severe
psychopathology.
19/91-distress and turmoil, anxious, somatic complaints.
23/32-depression, passivity, dependent, overcontrolled.
24/42-impulsive, unable to delay gratification, little response to social rules arid regula
tions, may have alcohol or drug problem.
27/72-affective distress, overreact to stress, depression, peSSimistic.
28/82-anxiety, tension, confused mentation, ineffective, may suggest serious :Isychopa
thology.
29/92-feel inadequate, may become depressed.
167
34/43-anger, may be assaultive, lack insight, possible alcohol problems, pas~ ilIe
aggressive style.
36/63-defiant, mild suspiciousness.
38/83-anxiety, tension, depression, worry, possible disturbed thinking.
45/54-nonconformists, low frustration levels, passive-aggressive.
46/64-passive-dependent, repressed anger, possible suspiciousness.
47/74-acting out, possible alcohol and drug problems, guilt.
48/84-odd, erratic, irritable, unpredictable, alcohol and drug abuse may occur, mar~ inal
histories, possible psychosis.
49/94-does not follow social standards, antisocial, self-indulgent.
68/86-little emotional relationship with others, possible psychosis, delusions, schizok.
69/96-anxious, overreact to stress, ruminative, possible psychosis.
78/87-in turmoil, depressed, worried, confused, panic, inadequate, schizoid, lOt
psychotic.
89/98-hyperactive, labile, pressured, possible psychosis, thought disturbance, dili xi
