Active Voice: the subject does the action.
Example: The people voted for a town curfew.

Passive Voice: the subject receives the action.

Example: A town curfew was voted for by the people.

Directions: Label each sentence, then convert each

sentence form active to passive or from passive to active.
1. The artist created a series of modern masterpieces.
Original sentence type: Active
Rewrite: A series of modern masterpieces was created by the artist.

2. The winning tomato at the county fair was grown by Jimmy Smith.
Original sentence type: Passive
Rewrite: Jimmy Smith grew the winning tomato at the county fair.

3. The best performance of the night was performed by the Macy City High
School Band.
Original sentence type: Passive
Rewrite: The Macy City High School Band performed the best performance
of the night.

4. Bobby’s parents gave him a new car for his graduation present.
Original sentence type: Active
Rewrite: His graduation present was a new car, which was given by
Bobby’s parents.

5. Students celebrated the completion of their final exams with a big party.
Original sentence type: Active
Rewrite:After the completion of their final exams, a big party was
celebrated by students.

6. The notes played by the musicians were flawless.

Original sentence type: Passive
Rewrite: Flawlessly, the musicians played the notes.

7. The doctor diagnosed the first case of flu this season.

Original sentence type: Active
Rewrite: This season, the first case of flu was diagnosed by the doctor.

8. The introduction to the book was written by the author’s father.

Original sentence type: Passive
Rewrite: The author’s father wrote the introduction to the book.
