RECORDING AND SCREEN

CASTING PROGRAMS

14
Video content can help students very well in (online)
learning: it can help to deliver customization, to make
up for missed lessons, or to enable distance learning.
Finding a good program to record a screencast can be
tricky. To help with that, we selected only the best free
programs we think to make a screencast.
ScreenRec
ScreenRec is a free screen recording application that allows you to record your screen,
webcam, or both in free HD, without putting a watermark on your video. Recorded videos
are then stored in cloud and folders under your own account (Google drive), after which
you can edit or share them with a URL. In addition, while recording you also have the
option to pause and choose whether to record audio from the system or from your
microphone. Finally, ScreenRec also has to offer some editing options too. With ScreenRec,
recording, editing, and sharing are as easy as it sounds: without unnecessary bells and
whistles, you can create a video that you can then share as a link. As per our suggestion,
this is currently one of the best screen and stream recording applications we ever tried. It is
important to consider that your videos are stored online and that the platform is improving
day by day.
Open Broadcasting Software (OBS)
You need to install OBS. OBS works with scenes: you can set exactly what is shown where.
You puzzle your image together using sources such as your webcam, the desktop, images,
the internet browser, sound sources such as the computer or your microphone, etc. (see
image above). Then turn this scene over so that you can easily get back to work next time.
You can then record the screen as a .flv or .mp4 file or stream it live. The program also has
a properly working chromakey (greenscreen) option. The program can be a bit of a puzzle,
but then you can record unlimited in HD, without watermark
Screencast-O-Matic
Perhaps the second most famous on this list. You go to the website, press Start Recording
and you can almost immediately make your first recording: no installation is necessary
(although you do need Windows or Mac PC). The program records (a specific part of) your
screen, your webcam, or both. You can also select which microphone is used. The free
version allows you to record up to 15 minutes in HD, which you can then post directly to
YouTube. Do you find 15 minutes too short, do you not want a watermark, do you still want
to edit your video or add sounds from the PC itself (movie, for example)? For a Pro account,
you will have to subscribe.
TechSmith - Snagit
Snagit is available as a program as well as a Google Chrome extension. It is a paid program.
The Chrome extension is free, however, and we think you can do enough there too: record
(a part of) the screen and that seen from sound via the microphone or via the computer
itself. The recordings can then be edited and shared. Snagit also has the ability to make
real-time notes on your desktop, so you can clearly indicate things. You can also
automatically save the recordings to your Google Drive, which is always handy. The nice
thing is that it is attached to your Chrome browser: you can work with it anywhere. For
example, if you work with a Chromebook, this is the ideal program. A must to try!
What Do We Recommend and Why
The convenience of use, quality of video produced, compatibility with the operating system,
and many other features make a screen recording/casting program the first choice of
users. ScreenRec is placed at the top because it is the application that gives you answer to
all the above questions really well. Go for it with confidence.
