What is Volcano?
A volcano is a vent, or opening on the earth’s surface, through which heated materials consisting of gases,
water, liquid lava and fragments of rocks are ejected from the highly heated interior of the earth.
Volcanic materials discharged during eruptions include gases and vapour, lavas, fragmental materials and ashes.
1. Vapour and gases - Steam and vapour constitute 60 to 90 per cent of the total gases discharged during a volcanic
eruption. Carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide, hydrogen are the main components of the gases which are
ejected out of the volcano.
2. Magma and lava - Molten rock materials, till the time they remain below the surface, are called ‘Magma’. But when they
come to the earth’s surface, they are called ‘Lava’.
Subduction is a geological process that takes place at convergent boundaries of tectonic plates where one plate moves under
another and is forced to sink due to high gravitational potential energy into the mantle. Subduction zones are sites that
usually have a high rate of volcanism and earthquakes.
Mid Continental belt: where volcanoes mainly arise from convergence of continental plates. Ex- Mount Etna (Italy).
Mid oceanic ridge belt: where volcanic activities due to splitting of plates. Ex- Helena Mountains (Iceland).
● Himalayan Mountain range was formed due to Continent-Continent plates collision of the Indian and Eurasian Plates.
● Because the rock making up continental plates is generally lighter and less dense than oceanic rock, it is too light to
get pulled under the earth and turned into magma.
● Instead, a collision between two continental plates crunches
and folds the rock at the boundary, lifting it up and leading to
the formation of mountains and mountain ranges.
● When an oceanic plate collides with a continental plate.
Oceanic crust tends to be denser and thinner than continental
crust, so the denser oceanic crust gets bent and pulled under,
or subducted, beneath the lighter and thicker continental
crust. This forms what is called a subduction zone. As the
oceanic crust sinks, a deep oceanic trench, or valley, is
formed at the edge of the continent.
● The crust continues to be forced deeper into the earth, where
high heat and pressure cause trapped water and other gasses
to be released from it. This, in turn, makes the base of the
crust melt, forming magma.
Active Volcanoes
● These are those which constantly eject volcanic lavas, gases, ashes and fragmental materials.
● It is estimated that there are more than 1000 active volcanoes in the world.
● Example - Mt. Etna (Italy), Mt. Stromboli (it is also known as Light House of the Mediterranean, It is in Italy)
● The Circum Pacific Belt in Pacific Ocean which is surrounded by Destructive Plate Margins from almost all the sides
represents the maximum number of active volcanoes. For this reason it is also known as the “Ring of Fire”.
Dormant Volcanoes
● These are those which become quiet after their eruptions for some time and there are no indications for future
eruptions but suddenly they erupt very violently.
● They can also cause enormous damage to human health and wealth. Vesuvius volcano is the best example of dormant
volcano which erupted first in 79 A.D; then it kept quiet up to 1631 A.D., when it suddenly exploded with great force.
The subsequent eruptions occurred in 1803, 1872, 1906, 1927, 1928 and 1929.
Extinct volcanoes
● When there is no indication of eruption in a volcano, even in future, it becomes extinct. The crater is filled up with
water and lakes are formed. It may be pointed out that no volcano can be declared permanently dead as no one knows,
what is
● happening below the ground surface. Most of such volcanoes are located now in the inner part of continents or ocean
bottoms, far away from present Plate Margins.
Shield Volcano
● Shield volcanoes are the largest volcanoes on Earth.
● The Hawaiian shield volcanoes are the most famous examples.
● Shield volcanoes are almost exclusively basalt, a type of lava that is very fluid when erupted. For this reason these
volcanoes are not steep, 90% of the volcano is lava rather than pyroclastic material.
● The island of Hawaii is built from five separate shield volcanoes -
✓ Kohala – extinct
✓ Mauna Kea – dormant
✓ Hualālai – dormant
✓ Mauna Loa – active
✓ Kīlauea – active
Stratovolcano
● A stratovolcano is a tall, conical volcano composed of one layer of hardened lava, tephra, and volcanic ash. These
volcanoes are characterized by a steep profile and periodic, explosive eruptions.
● The lava that flows from them is highly viscous, and cools and hardens before spreading very far. The source magma
of this rock is classified as acidic, or high in silica.
Caldera
● Calderas are formed by the inward collapse of a volcano. e.g. Mauna Loa & Mauna Kea of Hawaii Island.
Cinder Cone
● A cinder cone is a steep conical hill of loose pyroclastic fragments, or cinder that has been built around a volcanic
vent.
● The pyroclastic fragments are formed by explosive eruptions or lava fountains from a single, typically cylindrical,
vent. As the gas-charged lava is blown violently into the air, it breaks into small fragments that solidify and fall as
cinders around the vent to form a cone that often is symmetrical. E.g. Mt. Nuovo.
North America
● Mt. Pico de Orizaba – México, inactive, stratovolcano.
● Mauna Loa & Mauna Kea - Hawaii Island, USA, shield volcano, dormant.
● Mt. St. Helens – Washington, USA, Active, stratovolcano,
● Popocatépetl – Mexico, Active, stratovolcano.
Asia

● Mt Fuji – Japan, active , stratovolcano, basaltic lava eruption
● Mt Sumeru – Indonesia, active stratovolcano, granitic lava eruption
● Mt Krakatau – Indonesia , known for greatest volcanic explosion, produced a new volcanic island named Anak
Krakatau ( Child of krakatau)
● Mayon volcano –Philippines, Active, stratovolcano
● Sakurajima, Japan
● Mount Merapi – Indonesia, Active
● Mount Bromo, Indonesia, Active, Cinder Cone
● Mount Hallasan, the tallest mountain in South Korea
● Mount Aso – Japan. Japan’s largest active volcano, Mount Aso.
This volcano, located on the island of Kyushu, has the world’s
largest caldera.
● Mount Pinatubo - Philippines
● Mount Ararat – Turkey, Dormant
● Mount Sabalan – Iran
● Koh-i-Sultan is a volcano in Balochistan, Pakistan
● Mount Agung & Sinabung – Indonesia

(Stratovolcano )
