Winona State SEASON OUTLOOK
While relative youth carried the day a season ago, it will be a
veteran squad that takes to the diamond for Winona State in 2011.
Seven regulars return from last season’s starting lineup, with pitch-
ers Courtney Strang and Stacey Struzynski also back to continue
their dominance over NSIC hitters.
Winona State posted a 38-14 record with an everyday lineup
that featured just two seniors. The team advanced to the NCAA
Tournament for the fourth consecutive season and sixth time in
the last eight years. WSU placed second in the league with a 21-5
record.
THE LINEUP
Anchoring the Warrior offense once again will be senior cen-
terfielder Molly Bjelland. Bjelland’s play a season ago earned her
First Team All-American honors after hitting .371 with 12 home
runs and 51 RBI. Hitting for both power and average, she slugged
.755 while reaching base in better than 45 percent of her plate ap-
pearances. Bjelland was tabbed as NSIC Preseason Player of the
Year in a vote of the league’s coaches.
Senior Dallas Schmacker will continue as the team’s leadoff hit-
ter. In her first season at Winona State after transferring from In-
dian Hill CC, Schumacker was second on the team in both batting
average and on base percentage. She converted 10-of-11 stolen
base opportunities and scored 35 runs on her way to all-conference
second team honors.
Erin Link and Kim Wachholder are two transfers who will be
asked to contribute immediately. Link comes to Winona State from
Kirkwood Community College in Iowa. She has the edge to start
at first base. Wachholder will be in the mix for playing time at both
third base and in the outfield. Wachholder hit .262 with two hom-
ers and 13 RBI last season at Northern Iowa.
Kathy Crudo will anchor the Warriors from behind the plate.
She played in 48 games a season ago, hitting .305 with 43 hits. She
also knocked out five home runs and 30 RBI. Katie Betry has a leg
up for the starting position at third base after playing in 44 games Courtney Strang stepped in after Struzynski’s injury, posting a
