3.0 Background of Proton’s Company

Proton Holdings Berhad or better known as Proton is one of the well-known automobile
companies in Malaysia. Proton’s company manufactures a variety of stylish and high-
performance automobile engines. Proton was established by Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad and
Proton was the only national company until the arrival of Perodua in 1993. In 1980, Dr Mahathir
as minister of trade and industry at that time, asked MIDA (Malaysian Industrial Development
Authority) to make research about of nationally car projects. As a result, the company HICOM, a
national industry gets help from Japanese automotive company, which is Mitsubishi and
successfully created a car and named as Saga.

Proton Saga was created based on the Mitsubishi Lancer Fiore. Proton’s company has
built to sold this model and HICOM has 70% shares, while Mitsubishi has 30%. Proton Saga
managed to capture 70% of the Malaysian medium capacity passenger car market. This success
is due to Proton Saga’s price much cheaper than foreign cars due to high import taxes on foreign
cars and spare parts but HICOM have to bear the huge losses of Proton since its built until 1989
due to technical costs, component tools, technology and others. The Proton Saga was the first
model in September 1985 in Shah Alam. Proton's main activities are the manufacturing,
installation and sale of motor vehicles and related products. Proton produces various types of
vehicles such as Proton Gen 2, Proton Wira, Proton Saga, Proton Waja, Proton Perdana, Proton

in terms of driving and engine efficiency in terms of fuel consumption. Proton also improved the
quality of its services by providing a five-year warranty for free spare parts. Proton also exported
to countries who applying the right-hand drive, which is in New Zealand. Proton has produced
the first sports car that is Satria GTI that is widely used in circuit racing at Silverstone. However,
there are constraints faced that customers have to pay high premium insurance on the car. This is
because of the lack of security in terms of Satria GTI model for car security system is very easily
hacked.

5
4.1 Core principles and organizational values

Every company must have a vision and mission for the interests and purposes of a
company. This also happens to Proton companies; they also have the vision and mission of their
company. The vision of the proton company is to supply genuine spare parts to customers. We
provide quality and genuine vehicle spare parts to meet the demands of our customers. This is to
show the quality we use matches the price we sell. Next, the second vision of Proton is we
provide the best service to customers. This is because customers will choose the best service for
their vehicle to ensure their car is in good condition. The service we provide is not only on the
vehicle, but we also provide the best service to our customers by providing a comfortable waiting
area. For the mission of Proton company to be the best and comprehensive Proton service centre
by providing and providing service services with the best quality in Malaysia. This is to prove
that local automotive companies are also able to provide the best service that is on par with
foreign companies. For proton company, we prioritize the quality and satisfaction of car service
to our customers. So, we have our own objectives that we want to achieve in the Proton
company.

First of all, the objective is proton wants to lead the manufacturing and automotive
industrial processes in the country. this can create a sense of pride among Malaysians because we
are also able to produce our own Malaysian brand cars. Although we have a lot of competition
with foreign brand cars, this does not break the spirit of our company in providing satisfaction
with the products and services that we provide. Next, the second objective is enhancing
knowledge and mastery of technology in the field of automotive manufacturing industry. this can
add to the knowledge of automotive which is useful for proton companies. In addition, with new
knowledge and skills, we can also repair our products. This can at once repair all existing
weaknesses. In venturing into this field, of course we also want the satisfaction of our customers
in buying our products. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. The last objective is
strengthening the ability of the Malaysian automotive industry to penetrate the international
market. This is because it can increase export demand abroad and can also increase national
income. This can thus introduce Malaysian products to the rest of the world.

6
4.2 Stakeholders of the organizations

The first one of the stakeholders is customers. As a big company, of course we want to
attract our customers to buy our product and the organizations in the company must know what
should they do. The company also have to maintain regarding to the customers price and the
customers right. It is because we always hear the statement about ‘customers always right’. In
Proton Holdings Berhad, they maintain attract their customers with a few strategies. Chief
executive officer in Proton, Dr Chunrong said in a statement the same as the previous month, the
national car manufacturer still maintaining attractive pricing strategy in November and prices
without sales tax and service tax (SST), where Proton absorb the amount of tax for all models.
This promotion gets attraction and support from buyers or customers in Proton company. Proton
Holdings Berhad continue the pricing policy without SST for all current models to make it easier
for customers to own a Proton’s car. Proton also bring the company's brand to be more accessible
by participating in activities such as touring series and carnivals, thus providing more channels to
see, test and buy Proton’s cars. When Proton Holdings Berhad keep promoting their cars with
lower price, it automatically attracts more customers to buy their cars and they can gain more
profits to their company. This is also giving more ideas to Proton how to get more buyers and
how to improve their services well who can fulfill what customers want.

7
Furthermore, the stakeholders of the organizations are employees. Employees the people
who are working with the company and together spend their energy with the company. The
employees also other parties that also will give the effect to the success of organizations. It is
because the businesses in one company depends on them. If they are happy with the way
company treat them, they will stay longer with the company. If they are not happy, of course
they want to run from our company. The profits in the company also depends on employees. The
businesses and company must treat employees fairly. It is because when they feel the company,
they work does not appreciate their hard work, employees will be frustrated and move to other
competitors and find better opportunities for them. In Proton Holdings Berhad, the safety of
workers is a priority with the number of employees almost 10,000 people, and daily activities are
done to monitor the health status of each employee from all levels. Proton also want to provide
an opportunity for employees to get together to get to know each other and share knowledge and
they believe that a comprehensive network among their employees can help improve the
technical knowledge and problem-solving skills of any employees. Proton Holdings Berhad also
appreciate their hard work employees and planned to highlight their skills and the quality of their
work in controlling the customer's car.

8
Next, the stakeholders of the organizations are investors. Investors are individuals who
put money into such a business entity for financial returns and a part of a company. They have
right to know every single information in company. One of the investors in Proton Holdings
Berhad (PROTON) is Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Local vendor Proton Holdings Bhd is
collaborating with vendors from China which will see an initial investment of RM47 million into
the country. Among others, it involves technical agreements, joint ventures (JVs) and foreign
direct investment (FDI) foreign vendors into the Malaysian economy. In addition to investment
in facilities and technology, the collaboration is expected to create 450 new jobs in the
automotive industry, from assembly to design engineering that requires highly skilled workers.
The vendors will supply equipment to the Proton production facility in Tanjong Malim, which is
currently undergoing an expansion initiative at a cost of RM1.2 billion. So, the company
responsibility to tell the truth to the investor. Without investors the company are nothing because
the company needs money to run the company operation. Other than that, companies need to
conduct business according to proper accounting procedures so that investors will not turn to
competing companies.

9
10
Suppliers is also one of the stakeholders of the organizations. The Proton Holdings
Berhad (Proton) emphasizes business arrangement mutually beneficial partnerships with
suppliers to prevent injustice both sides. Who are suppliers? Basically, a supplier is a person that
supply the row material that related to company’s revenue. The agreement signed between
Malaysian suppliers and overseas partners is the first step in creating a supplier who is able to
meet the technology and quality standards required to produce new generation Proton cars to be
produced with Geely. The agreement is also PROTON's commitment to enhance local sales and
export markets with the transformation of Tanjung Malim as a research and development center
as well as a production hub for right-wing driving models within the Geely group. PROTON
urges its suppliers to take this opportunity to establish joint ventures with overseas suppliers to
achieve world standards in terms of technological advancement and quality. This will enable
them to compete internationally and develop a community of Malaysian automotive industry
suppliers that can compete globally. Proton Holdings Berhad also has good relationships with
suppliers so that the company can operate according to what is planned. Furthermore, a long-
term relationship with the supplier will give us and the supplier more profit. When we get low
prices, our company will also get high profits.

Last the stakeholders of the organizations is local and international

communities. When the company doing the community activity, people will be looking that
effort and initiatives that company doing. For example, if company have a support to or give
donations to the people who really a help, basically people will be looking the company as one of
the companies that focus on social responsibility. People will view the company in positive ways
and positive reputations. It can also increase company competitors. In Proton Holdings Berhad,
they also give donations to poor and to family from low income. Proton also help the flood
victim and provide them with food and a place to stay for a while. Proton Scholarship
Foundation gives priority to students from low-income families, children of staff and students get
excellent academic results Proton. For the Financial Year 2011/2012, Proton Foundation has
received 404 applications, of which approximately 236 students soon to be interviewed for the
first level and 99 students were called to attend an interview for the second phase. In addition,
Proton celebrates the participants of the beautiful queen and the orphans. 45 participants together
with Proton's senior management team celebrated a total of 25 children from the Sweet Care
orphanage with lunch and presented souvenirs to them. Apart from the delicious food, they also

11
received souvenirs, were taken to the test track aboard the Proton X70 and spent time with Miss
Tourism International participants, which was an experience that was hoped to be a wonderful
memory for them. Proton proud to be the official car for the Miss Tourism International 2018
competition. This activity gives the Company the opportunity to help promote Malaysian tourism
and culture, which is appropriate because the Proton X70 is the first premium SUV from the
Malaysian automotive brand.

12
4.3 Corporate social responsibility program

 Community

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) means the responsibility of the management of an

organization to make decisions and take action that will help in the welfare and good of society
and the organization. In 2015, concerned with the plight of the flood victims who hit the East

Next Proton Holdings Berhad, recently conducted community activities with the residents
of the Ar-Rayyan Welfare Hostel at the Tampoi Supermarket, Johor Bharu. These community
activities are part of Proton's corporate social responsibility initiative to reach out and strengthen
relationships with the general public as well as provide assistance to those in need. Through such
programs, it can foster a culture of frugality and prudent spending to children and the younger
generation such as the residents of this Ar-Rayyan Welfare Hostel, especially in daily expenses.
This austerity culture needs to be instilled in their souls in order to understand and appreciate the
value of the money themselves.

15

17
4.4 Approaches to social responsibility program

The social responsibility is that the company should build relationships with the
community and the environment in which it is located. This means he needs to value the
relationship with the community, customers, and employees, and not to the point of simply
maximizing profits. As we have learned, there are four approaches that are obstructive,
defensive, accommodative and lastly proactive. In the business world, we can see every company
taking a different approach to being a socially responsible company. Proton Holdings Berhad
(Proton) use a proactive stance to approach social responsibility. Proactive approach to social
responsibility means in which the company is actively looking for opportunities to contribute to
the welfare of groups and individuals in their social environment. They also assertive with the
highest level of social responsibility shows a proactive attitude. they take arguments in favor of
social responsibility, place themselves as citizens in a society, make a proper commitment to
improve social well-being in general, and avoid accommodative attitudes by proactively seeking
opportunities to contribute.

Proton Holdings Berhad (PROTON) classified using the proactive approach because it
has many programs organized for the community. First of all, they take action to help in the
welfare and good of society and the organization by concerned with the plight of the flood
victims who hits the East Coast. From that we know, the Proton Holdings Berhad (PROTON)
fulfilling the social responsibilities. Other than that, as a company that collects, proactive
companies to make social responsibility a priority. Rather than respond to the criticism, the
company proactively trying to stay ahead of the curve in terms of social responsibility. This can
make ethics as part of its mission statement and trying to prevent danger to the environment or
employees. Proactive companies may seek to implement a new recycling program, pay wages
and benefits to all employees, and donates part of its profits to charity. For example, managers
strive to promote the interests of shareholders and stakeholders actively, using the organization's
resources to do so.

As a conclusion, Proton Holdings Berhad (PROTON) has long been known for its
proactive program to support and develop its employees. At PROTON, we consider it one
demands and privileges to serve to the various communities in which we are operate. PROTON
continues to provide support to various charities registered and for pure purposes, for example

18
welfare of orphans, institutions academics and various health bodies. The spirit of caring and
sharing is something that is supported by all workers us and this has been clearly highlighted
when the tsunami struck violently in some Asian countries in December 2004.

19
4.5 Social responsibility management

The demands of social responsibility that is given to the organization of contemporary

society increasingly sophisticated and educated more powerful than ever. Organizations need to
make an approach to social responsibility in the same way as they develop business strategies
other. So here we can see how the Proton Holdings Berhad managing their corporate social
responsibility (CSR) programs in their company.

Firstly, social responsibility must start from the top and is considered as a factor in
strategic planning. This thing refers to their leader and followers, which is the employer and
employees in the company. In Proton Holdings Berhad, Dr Mahathir Mohamad as a chairman in
Proton Holdings Berhad take the responsibility to help people who in low income and poor, such
as built the program called Proton Flood Relief Mission. The employees must understand the
education of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) from the top management first. Dr Mahathir
Mohamad can educate the employees in Proton Holdings Berhad and create awareness to the rest
of the organization in their company.

20
Furthermore, one of the executives must be responsible for the company's agenda. When
the company assign one respective person to handle, all the team of corporate social
responsibility programs might be easier. It is because this person will control and manage every
single thing that related to this corporate social responsibility programs. Mr. Norzahid Mohd
Zahudi, as chief executive officer in Proton Holdings berhad has organized the programs
‘Shopping with Proton’ and 40 children from the Ar-Rayyan Welfare Hostel joined this program.
Proton Holdings Berhad organized this event at the Supermarket in Tampoi. In addition, Tun Dr
Mahathir Mohamad also planned to give scholarship to student who needed. This scholarship to
aim more students to further their studies in engineering, accounting, economics and
communications.

21
Moreover, the top management committee must do a plan that details about the level of
management support. The company shows that how they are actively seeking for the opportunity
to get involve into the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs and the detailing of the
plan should be there. In 2019, a new executive officer, Dr Li Chunrong have come out with his
plan to organize community-based competitions. Dr Li Chunrong said the competition also
honed the skills needed to achieve excellence in the fast-moving automotive industry especially
when working with a famous brand such as Proton. A total of 51 groups from 20 institutions of
higher learning throughout Malaysia have registered to participate in this competition.
Competition based on these communities requires participants aim to draw up a marketing plan
for Proton to maintain the position as the best SUV X70 Proton Malaysia, as well as how Proton
can create activities for the public with better. For Dr Li Chunrong, this program also can make
Proton’s company gain more profits in the future with more ideas.

22
In addition, organizations must conduct social audits occasional systematic analysis on
its success in the use of funds allocated for the purpose of its social responsibility. A person who
in charge with the corporate social responsibility programs have to come out with the evaluation
of the programs that their company practice. So, we will know that every program that has
organized can gain more profits to the company or not. If do, the profits not only given to the
company, but it’s given to person that you’re giving the support and we can see they are happy
or not. In corporate social responsibility programs shows that profits in Proton Holdings Berhad
increase and Proton give their employees bonus to appreciate their work to make this program
success. The best package is the employee discount and the financial and pension plan because it
provides employees money after they retire. Proton Holdings Berhad also give their employees a
set of monthly coupons for employees to exchange for products at the local convenience stores.

23
5.0 Conclusion
In a nutshell, this report has provided accurate data on the data collected with the aim of
developing a good business plan for the business and making a profit. Preparation is very
important for a company before starting a business. A company must have their core principles
in their plan to do the business. Core principles and organizational values is about to mention
about company vision and mission, company’s background what their ideas to make their
company growth. Then, we told about how the stakeholders of the organizations of company
because not all the company have the same stakeholders. The stakeholders that we learn is about
customers, employees, investors, suppliers, local and international communities. People can view
the company with positive ways when the company doing corporate social responsibility (CSR)
in their company and can gain more profits. It is because their ideas can attract more customers
to come to them. In corporate social responsibility also must have their leader who can handle
and managing these programs. The aim is to make the social responsibility program be easier
because that person who in charge will come out with schedule. So, corporate social
responsibility programs are important to gain more profits in the company, give more bonus to
employees and make customers happy because we can make them satisfied on what they want.
