The test atmosphere generated in the animal study is not representative of workplace environments, how the
substance is placed on the market, and how it can reasonably be expected to be used. Therefore the test
result cannot be directly applied for the purpose of assessing hazard. Based on expert judgment and the
weight of the evidence, a modified classification for acute inhalation toxicity is justified.

Additional information
Special properties/effects: Over-exposure, especially when spraying coatings containing isocyanate without
the necessary precautions, entails the risk of concentration-dependent irritating effects on eyes, nose throat,
and respiratory tract. Delayed appearance of the complaints and development of hypersensitivity (difficult
breathing, coughing, asthma) are possible. Hypersensitive persons may suffer from these effects even at low
isocyanate concentrations, including concentrations below the occupational exposure limit. Prolonged
contact with the skin may cause tanning and irritant effects.
Animal tests and other research indicate that skin contact with diisocyanates can play a role in causing
isocyanate sensitization and respiratory reaction.

The product is used mainly as a hardener in coating materials or adhesives. The handling of coating materials
or adhesives containing reactive polyisocyanates and residual monomeric HDI requires appropriate
protective measures referred to in this safety data sheet. These products may therefore be used only in
industrial or trade applications. They are not suitable for use in homeworker (DIY) applications.

1.4. Guidance to DU to evaluate whether he works inside the boundaries set by the ES
The risk management measures given in this exposure scenario apply to the specified substance in a concentration as
indicated in the scenario. The concentration of the substance in the product may differ. A downstream user should
evaluate if the risk management measures may be adapted accordingly.
Guidance is based on assumed operating conditions which may not be applicable to all sites; thus, scaling may be
necessary to define appropriate site-specific risk management measures.
Where other risk management measures/operational conditions are adopted, then users should ensure that risks are
managed to at least equivalent levels.

A very high level of containment is required, except for short term exposures.
Use in closed system for easy maintenance.
If possible keep equipment under negative pressure.
Personnel who work with the substance should have a pre-placement medical examination and periodic examinations

Amount used, frequency and duration of use (or from service life)
A very high level of containment is required, except for short term exposures.
Use in closed system for easy maintenance.
If possible keep equipment under negative pressure.
Personnel who work with the substance should have a pre-placement medical examination and periodic examinations
thereafter, including a pulmonary function test. Anyone with a medical history of chronic respiratory disease, asthmatic
or bronchial attacks, indications of allergic responses, recurrent eczema or sensitization conditions of the skin should
not handle or work with the substance. Anyone who develops chronic respiratory distress when working with the
substance should be removed from exposure and examined by a physician. Further exposure must be avoided in case
of pre-sensitisation to the substance (ALIPA, 2008).
Provide any measure to eliminate exposure.
Control staff entry to work area.
Ensure all equipment is well maintained.
General Permit to Work (PTW) for cleaning and maintenance activities
Regular cleaning of equipment, work area and clothing.
Supervision in place to check that the risk management measures in place are being used correctly and operation
conditions followed.
Training for staff on good practice.
Procedures and training for emergency decontamination and disposal.
Good standard of personal hygiene.
Recording of any "near miss" situations.
Sensitisers – pre-employment screening and appropriate health screening.
Effective housekeeping processes in place.
Room ventilation rate of 1 air change per hour (ACH) is required.
Conditions and measures related to personal protection, hygiene and health evaluation
All skin and mucous membranes with potential exposure protected with appropriate PPE.
Wear suitable gloves tested to EN374.
