Assignment # 7
1. At a given point in the high-speed flow over an airplane wing,
the local Mach number, pressure and temperature are 0.7,
0.9 atm, and 250 K, respectively. Calculate the values of po, To,
p*, T* and a* at this point.

2. At a given point in a supersonic wind tunnel, the pressure and

temperature are 5 x 104 N/m2 and 200 K, respectively. The
total pressure at this point is 1.5 x 106 N/m2. Calculate the
local Mach number and total temperature.

3. At a point in the flow over a high-speed missile, the local

velocity and temperature are 3000 ft/s and 500oR,
respectively. Calculate the Mach number and the
characteristic Mach number at this point.

Assignment # 7
4. A jet of air at 275 K and 0.69 bar has an initial Mach number of
2.0. If it passes through a normal shock wave determine (a) Mach
number (b) pressure (c) temperature (d) density (e) speed of
sound and (f) velocity downstream of the shock.

5. A supersonic wind tunnel is designed to produce flow in the

test section at Mach 2.4 at standard atmospheric conditions.
Calculate (a) the exit to throat area ratio of the nozzle and (b) the
Reservoir pressure and temperature

6. The reservoir pressure of a supersonic wind tunnel is 10 atm. A

pitot tube inserted in the test section measures a pressure of
0.627 atm. Calculate the test section Mach number, pressure,
temperature and area ratio.
