PROBLEM HIERARCHY ANALYSIS

Introduction
According to Edward DeBono, it’s crucial to think about the root cause of a problem. He stated to
main questions to understand the problem better: why do I want to solve the problem and what’s
stopping us from doing it.
Asking the ‘why’ question is broadening our problem definition, and asking the ‘what’s stopping’
question shifts our perspective to lower levels. What usually happens when using the tool is that
one of the problem definitions emerges as the ‘right’ level for applying the idea generation tools.

WHY EMPATHIZING?

“The most secure source of new

ideas that have true competitive
advantage, and hence, higher
margins, is customers’
unarticulated needs”
Jeanne Liedtka, author of Solving Problems with Design Thinking, in an article in the Batten Review.

Re-Design onboarding process with Design Thinking

4 different teams from 4 company locations in the country came together to redesign the onboarding
process for the new employees. The project duration was 3 months in which the teams came
together 2 times and the rest was remote work of offline activities.

ICG consultants have supported the team to gain DT knowledge, learn new tools and use the
methodology to improve the process. Empathic interviews were conducted with more than 50 recent
employees and results were centralized in one place. End result was an improved process which
applies to all levels of the organization, in all Romanian locations and which reduced turnover during
integration process.

Facilitation was offered in Understand, Ideate and Prototype phases during the 3 months. A side
effect of the project was an increased communication between HR teams.

Re-Design a strategic HR process with Design Thinking

Two teams of 4-6 people worked in parallel for this desiderate, using Design Thinking as a guiding
methodology. The challenge was to obtain significant different results in a definite timeframe of 100
days. The second objective was to transfer know-how and mindset to the project team. The overall
project was successfully implemented, and the resulted MVPs are now in use.

ICG consultants facilitated the process of the two teams, by transferring them the Design Thinking
methodology and by organizing and monitoring the whole design thinking process. Forms, tools, tips
& tricks were deployed to the teams, while online coaching and feedback was continuously available.

Projects sponsors were involved in the process from the early phases, in order to obtain internal
support to overcome blockages and to rapidly transfer MVPs into operations. The consultants were
involved also in the ”empathize” phase, especially at discussions with top and middle management
representatives.
