OPERATION
It is assumed that all personnel using this equipment and/or manual will be trained and familiar
with BOP equipment and the operation of same. This BOP and related equipment should be fully
functioning and pressure tested prior to each job. All personnel should read this operating manual
and familiarize themselves with the operation and maintenance of the equipment before starting
any job.
HYDRAULIC CONNECTIONS
Connect hydraulic opening and closing lines as indicated in the hook-up schematic. Required
operating pressures and volumes are included in the preceding ‘Operating Parameters’ section of
this manual. When first operating a BOP after repair it should be cycled several times to remove air
from the Bonnet.
NOTE: When closing the manual locking / Closing handles it will be necessary to bleed some hydraulic
pressure from the ‘close’ side of the Bonnet, as displacement by the stems will create excessive pressure.

FUNCTIONAL AND HYDROSTATIC TESTING

The BOP was hydrostatically and function tested at the factory prior to shipment; however, these
tests should be repeated prior to each job. All test pressure are given in the preceding ‘Operating
Parameters’
BODY PROOF TEST
Open rams. Blank off top/bottom unions with blanking caps/plugs. Fill with fluid be careful to
bleed all air from the body cavity. Pressure to the desired test pressure and hold a minimum of
three minutes. Check for leaks. Bleed to zero. Repressure for another fifteen minutes. Check for
leaks. There shall be no visible leakage or drop in indicated pressure. Bleed pressure to zero.
NOTE: Except following a major overhaul or as apart of recertification, it is normal procedure to test only
to the working pressure or 1000 psi above the maximum anticipated well pressure. For recertification the
full test pressure should be used. In any case, the time interval at pressure should not start until the pressure
has stabilized. External body parts should be thoroughly dried prior to starting tests.

RAM TEST
Following the above body test, open the top blanking cap bleed valve; hydraulically close the rams
using hydraulic test pressure. (If rams are size for 1/8” or larger line it will be necessary to install a
test rod before closing. Test rods should be the same diameter as the line rams are sized for, and
should have a ‘do-nut’ on the lower end to prevent it from blowing out under pressure.) Check that
equalizer valve is closed. Pressure below rams to rated working pressure and hold stabilized for
10 minutes. There shall be no visible leaks or drop in indicated pressure.
CAUTION: Do not look directly down into the BOP to check for leaks, if blanking cap has been removed to
install rod, always aim the test rod at a retaining wall and use a mirror to observe leaks.

EQUALIZER VALVE TEST

Bleed the ram test pressure off by opening the equalizer valve. Close the equalizer valve and repeat
the ram test. This cycle should be repeated for a total of three cycles. Any drop in indicated
pressure can be either the equalizer valve or the rams. Should leakage occur, replace the stem in the
equalizer valve, and repeat test. If leakage continues, redress the rams, replacing seals as required.
Repeat tests until three cycles can be repeated without leakage.

HYDRAULIC OPERATING SYSTEM TEST

Throughout the above series of tests, observe all bleed ports and visible seal areas of the hydraulic
Bonnet and hose bridles. The hydraulic system will have been tested simultaneously with the ram’s
tests.

FUNCTIONAL TEST

Open and close the rams three times hydraulically, and close them three times manually, to assure
smooth operation. Note the minimum hydraulic pressure required to operate the rams in both
directions. Following hydrostatic testing, drift the BOP bore by passing a drift mandrel, sized in
accordance with API Spec. 5CT section 8.10* through the vertical bore. The mandrel gauge length
shall be no shorter than the end to end length of the BOP, and shall pass through the bore without
being forced.

TEST CRITERIA

Leakage and operational criteria have been stated in each of the above test procedures.

FIELD OPERATIONS
Connect the hydraulic controls to the BOP as in the hook-up schematic. Closing and opening times
will vary according to the hydraulic fluid flow available.
When hydraulic pressure is applied to the outer connections of the Bonnet’s rams will close. They
can then be locked closed by turning the manual handle clockwise approximately 16 turns. Should
hydraulic pressure not be available and it becomes necessary to manually close the rams –
disconnect from the inner Bonnet connections so that hydraulic fluid can drain, then manually
close the Bonnet by turning clockwise. (Note that the quick connect have check valves; therefore it
will be necessary to remove the check valve.) To reopen rams it is necessary to reestablish
hydraulic service and open hydraulically. The rams cannot be open manually.
To open rams apply hydraulic pressure to the inner connections on the Bonnet’s. Be sure manual
locking stems are fully open before trying to open rams.
Normal hydraulic operating pressures and volumes of fluid required are included under ‘Operating
Parameters’
The Equalizer valve is manually opened by using a 1/4” Allen wrench (hex key) and turning
counter-clockwise approximately 1.1/2” to 2 turns. Note that the cap screw (item 4) must be in
place to prevent EV stem from being backed out too far. To close, turn clockwise until seated. Do
not use undue forces as damage to the seat may occur.

RAM INSPECTION

Start with rams in the open position. Disconnect hydraulic hoses; leaving half quick connects in
Bonnets. Remove Bonnet’s assembly from Body (1). As Ram clears body slide it off Nut-Ram
body to remove Inner Seal from Ram Body Remove Screws, and slide it sideways. Clean Ram
Body and seals. Inspect seals.

Seals should be sharp, without gouges or pieces missing; however, some separation of the
elastomer from the side plates of the inner seals is normal. It is quite common to find pieces of the
inner seal missing, usually caused by explosive decompression, commonly caused by carbon
dioxide in the well fluids. Do not reuse any seals with pieces missing – replace them.

Carefully check that no damage to the O-Ring / Back-up has occurred. Replace if needed. Coat all
parts with inhibited grease and reassemble in reverse order by starting ram-into BOP, then sliding
Nut-Ram body in to ram.

Make-up Bonnet into body.

Connect hydraulic bridle and function test.

MAINTENANCE

Frequency of scheduled maintenance will vary with the time and type of service and frequency of
use. We recommend the following minimum routine be adhered to:

(Throughout, it is assumed that all parts and seal will be cleaned, inspected, and coated with a light
grease, inhibitor, oil, or hydraulic fluid prior to installation of new seals or reassembly of parts.)

FOLLOWING EACH JOB

Flush well fluid from BOP body cavity. Ensure no water or other fluid, particles inside the B.O.P.
If B.O.P. has been used on the job, or is to be stored for any length of time, remove Bonnet/ram
assemblies as above and remove equalizer valve assemblies. Clean all well fluids from parts and
body. Inspect and replace any parts if necessary. Coat all parts as above, and reassemble.

Reassemble and test. Repair as required if tests fail. Grease the Stem (5) and unions to protect for
storage. When painting BOP, the stems, union threads pins and boxes should be covered or coated
with grease to protect them from paint. Filling spanner holes and equalizer valve hex. With grease
will also prevent paint from reducing their sizes.

ANNUALLY

As above, all seals should be replaced, particularly if BOP has been exposed to extreme
temperatures. Additionally, the Bonnet seals should be replaced. Complete overhaul follows.

ASSEMBLY PROCEDURE

RAM ASSEMBLIES (Refer Drg. No: 0251110-H22)

Remove the Bonnet/ram assemblies and disconnect the rams as in “Ram inspection” section above.
With ram assembly removed from the Bonnet, remove Inner seal (44) by removing screws (47)
from ram body. Outer seal (43) can then carefully be pried from the body and ‘un-wrapped’ to
remove. Clean all parts. Inspect all seals and replace as required. Comparing to a new seal can
check undue hardening of the elastomer. Be sure Ram Body and Inner Seals are properly sized for
the line to be run. Lightly coat all parts with inhibited grease and reassemble. Insert one ‘leg’ of the
Outer Seal into the Ram Body and press into groove around body stretching seal until second ‘leg’
fit’s into opposite side. It may be necessary to tap the seal into place with a small rubber hammer.
Some Outer Seals have an energizing lip and others do not-both work. The lip assists in sealing at
lower pressures. The inner seal is slide into the Ram Body and Secured in position by Retainer Bar
(45)

BONNET ASSEMBLY (Refer Drg. No. 0151-110-C0)

Remove Bonnet/ram assembly from body, and ram assembly from bonnet as above. Remove Nut-
Ram Body. Hydraulically shift piston to full open position. Remove hydraulic connections and
drain fluid.

Remove Handle (11), and Nut-Handle (12) Unscrew End Cap (2) from Bonnet (1). Pull End Cap /
Stem assembly from Bonnet. End Cap can now be removed from Stem (5) by unscrewing it.
Remove indicator rod from end cap. Replace O-Ring and backups (7, 8, 9, 10, 18 & 19) on End
Cap.

Piston (3) can now be removed by pushing through. Replace T-Seal (6). Replace Seals and
Backups (7, 8, 9, 10).

Reinstall Piston in Bonnet, and Nut-Ram Body. Stem can now be reinstalled in End Cap. Reinstall
End Cap in to Bonnet. Leave Stem in fully open piston.

Reinstall hydraulic connections. With hydraulic ports upward, connect bridle and cycle piston
close/open several times to purge air from Bonnet. Leave in open position. Disconnect bridle, fit
refurbished Ram, and install assembly into BOP body.

Replace Handles.

EQUALIZING VALVE ASSEMBLY (Refer Drg. No: 461000-00)

Remove the equalizer valve assemblies from the BOP body by simultaneously unscrewing the
Body (1). Remove Retainer Cap screw (4), Stem (2), from Body (1).

Replace all Seals (3, 5, and 6) valve Stem Seal should be replaced if leaking or showing severe
damage. Valve Stem should be in full open position during installation to prevent galling on seat.
Once complete equalizer valve assembly has been fitted, Stem can be closed on to valve body.

Reinstall in reverse order from disassembly. Note it will be important to grease the parts which
rotate during assembly.

REPLACEMENT SEALS OPTIONS

This BOP has been supplied with Viton / Nitrile seals throughout, except where noted. Optional
alternate seals are available for special services. Contact the factory for specific optional
alternatives
