    English 10A “The Man to Send Rainclouds” Study Questions

    Part 1 - Objective Questions- These are objective questions that draw on your ability to recall
    material from the text. While your answers should be as complete as possible, you need offer
    only the facts requested.

    1. As the story begins, the author gives the reader subtle hints to learn more about Leon and
    Louise’s internal conflict between traditional and Christian customs. Find signs of this
    conflict on page 48.

    2. What can you tell about the time and place of this story?

    3. The tense conversation between Leon and Father Paul develops the external conflict between
    the two characters. Why might the priest be “distant” or “tired”?

    4. What request does Leon make of Father Paul?

    5. What does Father Paul do? What do you think his motivation is?

    Part 2 - Subjective Questions- These are subjective questions that require you to interpret
    material from the text. Your answers should provide insights on how characters behave and why
    they act as they do.

    1. What does Leon do with Teofilo? How might these acts relate to rain, clouds, or plants?

    2. Why might corn meal, pollen, and holy water be used in a funeral? What symbolic or
    practical purpose might they serve?
